Seems Tasker is safe here. Google recently updated its support page with a list of exceptions for apps that can use SMS and call log permissions, and one of the listed exceptions is "Task automation." In other words, Tasker is in the clear to keep on using those permissions for the foreseeable future.

If you've been using Tasker, one of Android's most popular automation apps, for anything relating to SMS or phone calls on your device, prepare yourself. With Google getting more strict about how apps can access SMS and phone permissions come January 2019, Tasker will lose those options.

The developer behind Tasker requested an exception to the rules, which only allow default dialer/messaging apps to use these functions, given Tasker was beneficial to folks using the app, not harmful but Google didn't see it that way and denied the request.

I know a lot of folks in the CrackBerry Forums have turned to Tasker to automate functions on their device, so unless something changes here, those SMS and phone automations will be removed from Tasker. If you're not down with that and want to Google to reconsider, add your voice here.
