BlackBerry once again an official sponsor of the Toronto International Film Festival

The Toronto International Film Festival has now officially kicked off and once again BlackBerry is sponsoring the event that showcases the best of Canadian and international cinema for film lovers. Aside from the sponsorship, the TIFF mobile app was created and made available for BlackBerry smartphones in BlackBerry World, which will help event goers stay update to date with all the latest news and scheduling.

“BlackBerry has long stood by our mission to champion ambition and support professionals, artists, and students on their journeys to achieving excellence,” said Andrew MacLeod, Managing Director Canada at BlackBerry. “We believe that our products and services help people to succeed, and our sponsorship of the BlackBerry People’s Choice Awards is in keeping with this goal. These awards have historically been strong indicators of success for many films, and have stood as beacons for ambition and aspiration.”

As noted, BlackBerry is sponsoring the People's Choice Awards portion of the festival and as part of that, they were asked to create a portfolio of People’s Choice Awards that would represent the BlackBerry brand and showcase TIFF’s heritage. That design, recently won a Silver IDEA award from the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) for its unique and iconic shape and utility, was built from a solid block of aluminum and featured a surprise viewfinder at the top of each award.

By looking through them, recipients found the awards doubled as light-box theatres that featured stills from the winning films. The awards will be given out during the TIFF 2013 to the winners as chosen by TIFF Festival visitors. Additionally, BlackBerry also won honourable mentions from IDSA for the designs of the BlackBerry Q10 and BlackBerry Z10 smartphones.

BlackBerry Security

BlackBerry has recently issued a warning that enterprise servers could be remotely accessed when they process images in a TIFF format. Attackers would need to craft a specific web page and get someone with sufficient privileges to click on a link to that page on their BlackBerry. Alternatively, they could send an e-mail or an instant message with this image, and they wouldn't even have to answer it in order for the exploit to work. Here's a snippet from the recently-released knowledge base article...

tiff app updated
It's September again already, and that means it's time for the Toronto International Film Festival! Research In Motion is a huge supporter of the annual festival, and in addition to the awesome BlackBerry application brought out last year, an app for the BlackBerry PlayBook has now been added. Both versions allow you access to film descriptions and trailers, schedules, and a festival map that's integrated with BlackBerry Maps, as well as a news and networking section that helps you keep up to date on all the latest updates via Twitter, Facebook, and press releases. The BlackBerry app also has BBM integration so when you attend the films you can automatically update your status to share it with your friends.

Even if you don't plan on attending the tiff, the apps are a fun way to explore the festival. Combining smooth graphics with an easy-to-navigate interface, you can get all the details while in Toronto or on your couch. Available for devices from the BlackBerry 8500 to 9900 and the PlayBook, you can download the tiff app free in BlackBerry App World from the link below. Check out a ton more screenshots after the break.
