Hockey fans - NHL GameCenter now available for Blackberry 10

What I know about Hockey I could write on the back of a postage stamp! But I do know a great app when I see one and NHL GameCenter falls right into that category. For some strange reason it seems that the new BlackBerry 10 application is not available for users in America. I'm slightly baffled why as I thought hockey was pretty big over there. Anyway, that may just be a small glitch.

Hockey Night in Canada brings scores, news and more to BlackBerry 10

Yet another solid app I checked out at Toronto's BlackBerry 10 launch event was CBC's Hockey Night in Canada, featuring video highlights, live scores, upcoming schedule, standings, and lots more. We scoped this one out just a bit before the big announcement day, but it was good to see everything in action and getting a few hints on what's coming next - namely premium subscription features.

If you're a hockey fan waiting for BlackBerry 10 then you likely already know the NHL GameCenter app will be available soon. In addition to that though, CBC is releasing their native Hockey Night In Canada app into BlackBerry World. With it you'll have access to constantly updated live scores, videos, stats, game results and more. If you want to see it in action, we've posted some screenshots below for you all to check out. Game on!

Quick Review: Canucks app for BlackBerry smartphones

Body:

Canucks app

Ah the Stanley Cup playoffs. It’s an exciting time of year to say the least. Who am I rooting for? The Vancouver Canucks of course. This year, you can associate the Vancouver Canucks with the phrase “this is what we live for”. I guess that same phrase can apply to hardcore BlackBerry users, as well. Over the weekend, I was lucky enough to win a pair of tickets to the first game of Round 3. My son had a blast; I think I’ve created another Canucks fan (and a future BlackBerry abuser to boot).

To keep on my favorite team (the Canucks, in case you forgot) I would check out Twitter for updates and read up on them in Sports news. A few weeks back, I installed the Canucks app. Through the app, users can stay up to date on their team and access videos, message boards, images, etc. Push notifications will remind you that it’s game day and give you updates on the scores after each period. The home screen will display a new message icon (the Canucks logo), reminding you to open up the app to see the message. The Main screen is alive with stats and options. The app gives you game analysis by period, goal and penalty. The Player Pulse section makes sure you have your favourite players stats at hand. The ever scrolling Recent Updates section is rolling through news, trivia, photos, video links and more. Standings will tell you how the Canucks and the rest of the NHL teams are doing. The social feeds let you see what people are saying on Twitter.

The included Rogers Arena map will display the sections and locations of stores/concessions. Are you ready to get your game on? From within the app, you can access the TicketMaster site or call regarding ticket packages. The app was developed by using the Orchard Mobile Framework from Atimi Software – the same Framework used to power the Calgary Flames app (iOS). It’s easy to navigate and offers quite a bit of information in such a confined space. I had a few problems with the application. It can only be used in landscape mode on my Torch – so no portrait mode support. Only a handful of BlackBerry models are listed as supported: 8900, Bold (9000, 9700, 9780), Tour 9630 and Torch 9800. I also found this app to be a somewhat heavy drain on battery life, but probably because it works so hard to harness the awesomeness of the Canucks. You can pick it up, for free, from BlackBerry App World. Pics after the jump.

If you're a hockey fan then maybe NHL Game Center is the app for you. The NHL has updated their wide array of applications and this time around Game Center got the BlackBerry treatment it deserved. As noted in the release, the application will come in three flavors.

Stanley Cup Playoffs and your BlackBerry

Body:

The playoffs are well underway and you can feel the Lower Mainland come alive with hockey fever. For me, it’s nice to see such a diverse community come together to cheer on our hockey team. Team colours worn by pedestrians, car flags go whizzing by, horns honking and drunken fans making fools of themselves; that is hockey! Are you sporting a playoff beard? I’m not and yes, I know, I’m bad for not doing so. The Canucks beat the LA Kings in game 6 and are now moving to round two and one step closer towards the Cup.

During the games, it’s fun to turn to Twitter and see what comments are being made, regardless if they are for or against your team. Though your friends may not be on the couch or at the arena with you, BlackBerry Messenger is there to capture every quip made. What else can you do with your BlackBerry to feed your hockey fanaticism? Perhaps dress is up in your teams colours or even use hockey sound effects as your alert tones. But, what about apps? There are a lot of applications out there that you can use to show off your pride, your knowledge and your passion.
