BlackBerry and Ford sign agreement for expanded use of BlackBerry's QNX and security software

BlackBerry and the Ford Motor Company have a pretty well laid out history of working together and today, that relationship has been extended. BlackBerry has now announced that a new agreement with Ford Motor Company has been signed for the expanded use of BlackBerry's QNX and security software. Although the terms of the deal are confidential, BlackBerry notes it signifies an acceleration in BlackBerry's pivot from hardware to software in support of the automaker's goal of providing connected vehicles and mobility to its customers.

QNX and Ford collaborate to create a better way to integrate phone apps in cars

A new collaboration between Ford and QNX hopes to create an industry standard for integrating smartphone apps into cars. Ford has ported its open source SmartDeviceLink (SDL) technology to the QNX platform, which will let drivers use voice commands, steering-wheel buttons and other in-car controls to interact with various smartphone apps.

Ford unveiled its brand-new QNX powered Sync 3 infotainment system late last year and while it has been a bit of a wait, they've now announced the first batch of vehicles to come loaded with the new technology. Arriving this summer on the 2016 Ford Escape and Fiesta, Sync 3 has been designed to work along the same lines as your phone or tablet, with plenty of big icons and swipe navigation.

Ford officially revealed its plans for Sync 3, the newest version of its entertainment and connected car system, earlier today. The new version is powered at the core by BlackBerry's QNX software, a change we expected was coming at some point. The car maker says that it will start appearing in its new vehicles sometime in 2015.
