BBM has gone through a lot of changes over the past couple of years, and one of the biggest was moving the BBM infrastructure from data centers in Canada to the Google Cloud Platform. At Google Cloud Next, Mohan Krishnan, CTO at BBM, held a session outlining just how the live migration worked.
As highlighted in the video, the process indeed wasn't without some hiccups. Taking legacy components and moving them while users were still actively using the services involved many sleepless nights trying to figure out new and improved ways for everything to not only work but work more efficiently than it did on the systems they were moving from.
Needless to say, it wasn't just a pick up the pieces and move them scenario and Krishnan covers the challenges they faced and how they overcame them. As expected, there are a lot of technical terms used in the session but even so, I still found the information interesting to take in. It clocks in at just over 40 minutes and is well worth taking a look.
