Google Assistant bringing 30 new languages, multilingual support, and more

If you find yourself using Google Assistant on your Android BlackBerry a lot but wish that it did more, Google has now announced a ton of new improvements that will be coming throughout the year including new languages, multilingual support, improved location reminders, and more!

As it stands right now, Google supports English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and Portuguese but as outlined in the update, by the end of the year Google will support over 30 languages including Danish, Dutch, Hindi, Indonesian, Norwegian, Swedish and Thai with more being added as the year goes on. Additionally, Google will be adding multilingual support so that Assistant will be able to understand multiple languages fluently starting with English, French, and German.

One other highlight of interest noted by Google is that they're working with OEM partners and carriers to expand Assistant capabilities as well under the Assistant Mobile OEM program. This will allow OEM's and carriers to create device-specific commands with the Assistant. For example, BlackBerry could use Assistant to better interact with BlackBerry-specific apps such as Hub, Calendar and more. Carriers such as Sprint, Koodo, Telus and Vodafone are also working with Google on Assistant to offer carrier specific functions, for example, adding new features to your plan, contacting customer support and more.

If none of those items get you interested in Google Assistant, Google has also announced they'll be rolling out Routines and improved location-based reminders that will work Google Home.

  • Routines: We first announced Routines last year, which help you get multiple things done with just a single command. In the coming weeks in the U.S., you'll be able to use six routines that help with your morning, commutes to and from work, and evening at home. For example, say "Hey Google, I'm home" and the Assistant on your Google Home or phone can turn on the lights, share any home reminders, play your favorite music and more, all with just four words.

  • Location-based reminders: You can already set reminders based on a location with the Assistant on your phone. In the coming weeks, you'll also be able to set them with your speaker. Want to make sure you pick up the milk at the grocery store? All you have to do is ask the Assistant on your smart speaker, like Google Home—and when you get to the store, the Assistant on your phone will remind you.

Needless to say, that's a lot of improvements and updates coming to Google Assistant over the next few months. While I have no idea if BlackBerry will be taking advantage of Assistant Mobile OEM program, it sure would be sweet if they considered it as it would be a nice addition. Google notes LG, Sony Mobile and Xiaomi are onboard. Do you all use Google Assistant? Let me know in the comments.
