Free mIQ Sync Service from Best Buy is Live

We got a first look at mIQ a few weeks ago, but the official release totally slipped through the cracks as there was no other formal announcement (thanks for the reminder Ro!).  The mIQ service from Best Buy Mobile is now live and ready for the world. I've been checking out the service for a few days, and it seems very promising. The premise is simple - install the app on your device and it syncs your contacts, messages, call logs and media with your online account. From there you can login to mIQ and view your media, edit contacts and even send SMS messages all of which sync back to your device. You can integrate the account with Twitter and Facebook as well, and even update your status. mIQ is an excellent free backup solution with the only downside being random ads placed throughout the page in your account. Having the ability to view all your data in one place as well as update contacts from the web is definitely very cool. Head over to miqlive.com to get started.

BerrySilent - The Ultimate Ringer Switch - $1.99 Until Thursday

Last week we checked out FlipOff, a cool app that changes the profile on your Storm just by flipping it over. I got word that Bellshare (makers of BerryBuzz and SmartAlerts) also have a similar app called BerrySilent. The application silences (or changes your profile) when your Storm is placed face down or by using a convenience key. You can set BerrySilent to silence when flipped over, and then return to the standard profile when picked up again. You can also choose to have the phone locked after switching profiles, and even an audible alert so you know BerrySilent took action. You can grab BerrySilent for only $1.99 in the CrackBerry App Store through Thursday.

Things To Do While Racing Your Ferrari - Text On Your BlackBerry Bold!

Well I guess this one is more Ferrari-humor than BlackBerry humor, but the video above still gave me an extra chuckle at the 54 second mark when the BlackBerry Bold makes its appearance (warning: might want to turn your speaker volume down a bit). Here's the background of what you're watching...

Over the years, F1-style gearboxes has evolved and -- in most cases -- proven to be faster and more efficient than a manual, with far less physical labor. Ferrari's recent lineup is chock full of auto 'boxes, and one F430 Challenge owner who frequents the track finally got fed-up with the teasing from his manual shifting brethren and decided to poke back at those who call his Maranello masterpiece the Ferraromatic.  Hit play on the video above to watch all the things you can do in a self-shifting Fezza, including knitting, texting and wine tasting (simulated). Sure, it's all a clever ruse (a few inconsistencies with steering angle spoil the illusion), but it's damn funny all the same.

Though subtle, there's one really important smartphone take away from this video. Though capactive touchscreens are all the rage these days, there's always going to be a market for non-touch screen devices. I mean, there's just no way the guy in the video could use a Storm or iPhone with racing gloves on! And PS: Texting While Driving is Bad, so just don't do it. Thx to Rico for sending this in!

PocketMac Users No Longer Able To Get Support From RIM

With the launch of BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac, this news really comes as no big surprise. According to the RIM knowledgebase, PocketMac for BlackBerry support was actually cancelled as of October 2nd, 2009. This means previous users of PocketMac who are continuing to use the application no longer will be able to obtain support from RIM.

Please be advised that as of October 2, 2009 PocketMac is no longer supported by Research In Motion.

Please contact PocketMac at www.pocketmac.com if you require support for PocketMac for BlackBerry smartphones.

Please note that related references and troubleshooting steps have been removed from www.blackberry.com.

From here on out, users of PocketMac are advised they will need to contact the developers of the application for further assistance. But really, was PocketMac that bad RIM had to abolish its existance off their site? I kid, I'm sure it was purely contractual that it was removed but as such will anyone out there choose PocketMac over BlackBerry Desktop Manager now?

SendX 25% Off Through Wednesday

Since I wrote about SendX last week I have been using it on my Tour and I don't know how I did without it. This is a very handy application that should be built right into the OS (much like many other apps we've seen popping up lately). SendX lets you easily send information from various built in applications from one to the other. I frequently get emails that I need to follow up on and now I've been able to put them right into my calendar with just a few clicks. Other possibilities include creating tasks from your call log, SMS to a memo and much more. If you haven't had a chance to check it out, you can pick it up in the CrackBerry App Store for 25% off through Wednesday.

Signs Of The BlackBerry Storm 2 Appear On Verizon Website

Not really too much to say about this other then the fact that Verizon really should just send out the official announcement we all know is coming. The BlackBerry Storm 2 forums filled up earlier with some findings on the Verizon website as shown above, where users through some url magic are now able to view the 360 degree demo of the BlackBerry Storm 2. Kevin gave his thoughts earlier this week on the when and why of the delayed announcement and maybe Verizon is finally going to change things up. So, what do you all say should Verizon just get it out the door already or what?

BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac Updated to v1.0.1

It looks like the less than a month old Desktop Manager for Mac has already received an update. Reports are flying in that the software has been updated to v1.0.1 Build 2. What does that mean? Well we're not totally sure as there is no updated changelog posted yet for 1.0.1 at docs.blackberry.com. But we do know the first build had a few bugs left in it. If you find something different be sure to leave a comment and let us know.

First Images: BlackBerry Watch is FOR REAL!

* Update 2 - October 26th, 2009 - the inPulse Smartwatch for BlackBerry Smartphones has been officially announced and is now available for pre-order! *

* Update - Just to be clear as I've seen some confusion in the commments, but as far as we know at this time the inPulse watch is not being made by/for BlackBerry (it won't feature a BlackBerry logo), but is being made for use with BlackBerry Smartphones. However, this is in fact "the BlackBerry watch" that has been referred to previously in articles dating back to WES in May. There isn't another RIM-built BlackBerry watch out there. *

Remember that story about a Bluetooth BlackBerry Watch accessory being in the works? In case you were doubting it, today we can say with certainty that it's happening, it's getting announced soon, and what you're looking at above (another image below) are actual renderings of the real deal. Key features we've been told so far about the BlackBerry-connected smartwatch by our source:

  • it has been designed specifically for use with BlackBerry Smartphones from the ground up - developed by a new BlackBerry-dedicated accessory company
  • it features an OLED screen that we hear is "big, bright and beautiful" and optimized for displaying text clearly, and thanks to OLED has solid battery life
  • it's designed to show you notifications and previews of messages arriving on your BlackBerry
  • judging by the filename of the photos as they were sent in to us, we're thinking it's going to be branded the inPulse smartwatch

The intent of the watch isn't to replace using your BlackBerry to view messages. Rather, it's for those occassions when your BlackBerry is tucked away - while in a meeting, while driving, or while you're out for a bike ride and you feel it vibrating in your camelback. When you get that impulse to stop what you're doing and pull out your BlackBerry, now you can quickly glance over at your inPulse and decide if you need to pull out your BlackBerry to address that message now or if it can wait fifteen minutes you're free.

Definitely a cool accessory. And because this smartwatch is desiged specifically for BlackBerry, we're thinking hoping that at somepoint the watch APIs will become available to BlackBerry app developers so even notifications from third party apps could be displayed. CrackBerry heaven! We'll bring you the official details on this when they emerge soon.

Larry David Needs His BlackBerry Bold

Curb Your Enthusiasm is one of my absolute favorite shows and if you've been watching this season (which has been hilarious so far imo) then you've likely spotted Larry David with his BlackBerry Bold in hand on more than one occassion.

The BlackBerry Bold and Larry's addiction to the device (hello BrickBreaker!) were put in the spotlight on last night's episode. Check out the clip above - minor language warning.

Now be honest. Would you have done the same thing as Larry in this situation? :)

BlackBerry Device Software Web Update Now Working with Firefox - Finally!!!!

Until now the only way to use the BlackBerry Web Update to upgrade your device software was through Internet Explorer. It looks like now the updater is also working with Firefox (finally). I'm not sure how many actually use the web update as opposed to Dekstop Manager or App Loader, but at least now the option is there. Apparently RIM wasn't willing to go all out and fully integrate however, since Firefox requires an "Apploader Web" MSI download (about 30mb) before you can get up and running. Regardless, a much better option now if you are unwilling (like myself) to use IE more than you have to. Thanks to Stephen for sending this in!

BlackBerry Storm 2 Accessories

Following up on our BlackBerry Storm2 Review, we received a number of comments, tweets and emails related to BlackBerry Storm2 accessories. Will the 'insert name here' case / accessory I already own for my Storm work with the Storm2 or will I have to buy a new one? What accessories should I buy first? Is there anything else I should look out for? We figured a quick post and poll could quickly get soon to be and new BlackBerry Storm2 owners pointed in the right direction.

What is the first accessory you will buy for your BlackBerry Storm2?(poll)

Labyrinth Lite - Now Available In Free Edition For BlackBerry Storm Users

One of my favorite games got somewhat of revision a few days ago. BerryBlow has released a new version of Labyrinth. While some new features were added, it's not really an update but more of an alternative to the fully featured game it's worth mentioning. Labyrinth Lite is a free offering from BerryBlow and while the original Labyrinth has an infinite amount of playable levels, Labyrinth Lite cuts off at just 10. In short, a great free option for those who just want to have a quick go at it in their spare time.

RIM Rolling Out Google Contact Sync Across Carrier BIS Services; OS 5.0 Hopefully Coming Soon

Over the weekend many users have reported seeing the "Contacts" options start appearing on their Gmail accounts while logged into their carrier's BIS sites. Telus, AT&T, Rogers, T-Mobile and Verizon have all been accounted for at this time and I'm sure many others are to follow. This was one of the highly noted upgrades to BIS 2.8 that was stated as coming approximately 2 weeks after launch.

While it's been a little longer then 2 weeks it is nice to see it actually being enabled at this time. However, it does not seem to be fully functioning as of yet either. OS 5.0 is required in order for it to work, which if you have downloaded any of the leaks you should be able to use it but when checking the box to enable it produces an authentication error. It's safe to say RIM has not fully enabled it as of yet but it is coming soon and quite possibly OS 5.0 will come with it. Here's to hoping RIM makes it happen soon.
