BlackBerry News and Reviews

ScanLife: the 2D Barcode Reader

On October 7th, 1952, the first patent for a “Classifying Apparatus and Method” was issued. This eventually developed into the barcodes we know today. I mostly associated barcodes with the UPC barcodes found typically on price tags. I never thought too much about what was beyond those boops and beeps. I was surprised to learn the large number of Linear and 2D barcodes that are used for various reasons. Beyond sales, inventory tracking and shipping/receiving, you can utilize codes to encode URLs, characters, images, emails and more.

A few weeks ago, while reading the Metro News (yes I still read actual newspapers), I came across the 2D barcode called EZcode, found within one of their sections. The EZcode links readers to their mobile site and updated editorials. This review isn’t about them, it’s about the free barcode reader I picked up from the BlackBerry App World. It’s about ScanLife. This application is able to read an EZcode, QR Code and Datamatrix / Semacode. ScanLife may not be the life you want to live, so have a read and see if it’s for you.

More Storm2 Promo Material Floats Into Verizon Stores

Yesterday we saw some great flyers showing a BOGO for the Storm2. Today we discovered some more promo material that looks to be arriving in Verizon stores as well. The poster features the Storm2 and Tour side by side, but no other text or details. Again, a sure sign that the release is imminent. The cool thing on this one (for all the speculators) is the code on the bottom of the poster. Check out the image after the jump - it reads BLKBN40X281009. Does this mean the Storm2 release is October 28th? Or the posters are supposed to be hung on the 28th? Surely it must have some secret meaning right? Sure it could be 40x28 dimensions and for October 2009, but exact dates are more fun! Drop us a comment and let us know what you think it means.

Contest Winners: e-GPS & Smart Lock and Wipe

I didn't even realize it but apparently we were all about BlackBerry security with our contests this week. We had offerings from e-GPS and Smart Lock and Wipe - both great apps that let you track and wipe your device remotely if its lost or stolen. If you didn't get in on the action, we already kicked off this week with a great contest from MusicSkins and of course there is our I Love My BlackBerry Video Contest that runs through October 18th.

The good folks Magilab were so happy with the sales of Smart Lock and Wipe, they actually upped the winners from 100 to 200! They also decided to run a special, so if you didn't win you can grab the app for 20% off in the CrackBerry App Store by using the coupon code SLW20off. This code will only work in our mobile app store or app store client from your device.

BlackBerry Storm 9520 Now Listed As Coming Soon On Vodafone Germany Website

With all the news today regarding the 9520 information that was posted by The Guardian and its claim that the Storm 2 would be arriving this week on Vodafone, this info comes as no surprise. Recently posted on the Vodafone Germany website under the coming soon section is the BlackBerry Storm 9520. No information on pricing is listed at this time, but it does bring us in line with what the Guardian was hinting at in their report.

Buy One Get One for the BlackBerry Storm2 At Release?!

Mauricio over at BlackBerry Rocks posted a great photo of a Verizon flyer today for a buy one get one free offer. The flyer pictures a Tour, Curve, Pearl Flip and everyone's new best friend the Storm2. No real details are included on this, but we can only assume that it may very well be a Storm2 launch promo. Its not unlike Verizon to offer a deal like this with the launch of a new device. Again we see the one-word branding of Storm2 (not Storm 2 or Storm 9550) that has been popping up recently as well. Obviously the launch is getting closer and closer, so more images and promo material will certainly keep flowing in. Offering BOGO for the Storm2 at launch is a pretty big deal - odds are looking good that VZW is going to be selling a ton of these.

Installing a BlackBerry Beta OS with Mac Desktop Manager

Since the early previews of the Mac desktop manager it was known that RIM was inputting methods to stop people from installing Beta or Hybrid OS'. What was unknown though was as to how RIM was planning on doing it. Now, things like that don't seem to last very long before someone figures out a way around it. Berryreview was advised of a YouTube video that was posted of a walk through on just how the process works. Check it out, but please remember use caution when doing any updates like this or installing a non official operating system. And if you must, be sure to back up all your data first. The extracted exe files needed are after the jump.

More BlackBerry Messenger Barcode Oddities

Ever since BlackBerry Messenger 5 leaked, users have been playing around with the barcode system and finding some strange and not so strange things about it. This one however has to fall under the strange category in my opinion.

We got a tip from JJ that if you scan the barcode shown in the example of how to use the barcode system, it comes up with a rather omnious URL from a quite popular site. Go ahead and try it out and let us know what you think. I'm not going to give away where exactly it takes you - but you can see that for yourself. I will say personally, I think someone at RIM who was on the BlackBerry messenger dev team might have insomnia. Thanks JJ!

Verizon BlackBerry Storm 2 9550 Full Video Walk Through

The announcement and launch of the BlackBerry Storm 2 9550/9520 is fast approaching, and this time around on the pre-release device video front our pal Sal is walking us through a Verizon-branded unit that is rocking an up to date OS in version 5.0.0.287 (5.0.0.293 is actually newest, but .287 isn't that far off!). Sal has been doing a great job entertaining us over the past couple months with his early-look vids, but in past videos the firmware on the devices was still relatively early stage and lagging behind what was in development. This time both the hardware and OS are fresh, meaning this is the first video that's giving you a good look at something that is/is close to what you'll be able to walk out of the store with when the Storm 2 goes on sale. This walk-through is long and in depth - a definte must-watch for all the Storm 2 chasers out there. Great vid sal!

Dots - Free Game for the BlackBerry Storm from Tafasa

Tafasa has released a new free game for the BlackBerry Storm. Dots is now available to download in the CrackBerry App Store and brings new life to an old fashioned time waster while adding a few new tricks to it. From the description:

Now you can play this classic pencil & paper game right on your BlackBerry! This fun game is easy to understand and enjoyable for all ages. Starting with an empty grid of dots, players take turns, adding a single horizontal or vertical line between two unjoined adjacent dots. A player who completes the fourth side of a box earns one point and takes another turn. The game ends when no more lines can be placed. The winner of the game is the player with the most points. All you have to do is click on the space between adjacent dots to add a line connecting them. Enjoy the fun graphics and unlimited number of move undos while you improve your skills against the computer or defeat your friend!

After having played the game for a while, I have to say it's well laid out and is quite enjoyable even with just playing against the computer. The game is ad support so you will see an ad run across the bottom of the screen here and there, but that's not something to worry about considering it's being offered free of charge.

In a not so surprising turn of events, accessories for the BlackBerry Storm 2 having been showing up in Best Buy locations. Specifcally silicone gel skins have been spotted by many people over the weekend as the tips email is full of pics from within Best Buy.

Retail outlets such as Best Buy and Future shop are known for marking their material by codename rather then "launch" name for the devices.
