RIM Security Chief Speaks About Smartphone Attacks

In an article posted by Reuters, Scott Totzke, RIM's vice-president of BlackBerry security speaks about the security of smartphones these days making some bold, but reasonable statements about where we could end up if we are not careful.

Totzke, along with Kevin Mahaffey, chief technology officer at Flexilis shared issues and concerns for the smartphone market both agreeing that users need to be more aware of what, exactly they are installing on their devices. Essentially, if warnings are not heeded in these areas your smartphones could be used in DDOS attacks. Totzke was quoted as stating "I think that's an area of concern," while Mahaffey stated "These are not telephones anymore. These are computers. So people are going to have all the problems on their phones that they have on their computers."

The smartphone market is growing massive and it has reached a point where security concerns are now going to be a huge factor with the amount of information and data users store on their devices. We have seen some "proof of concepts" lately wherein security has been breached on a multitude of devices and one can only hope that manufacturers are working hard to help keep their users safe and that users will utilize all offerings such as updates and patches.

So what's your take on it? As a smartphone owner, do you give any thought to security? Or do you just assume it's all good and keep installing apps like crazy?!

Leaked: OS for the BlackBerry Curve 8520!

We saw OS leak last week for the Bold 9000 and Curve 8900. This time it's the BlackBerry Curve 8520 that's getting some love. I can't wait for 5.0 to roll out officially for more devices.... it'll be happy times for many a BlackBerry user out there.

*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). Follow the links below for more information and instructions. *

AT&T BlackBerry Bold 9700 OS Available For Download

With the launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 on AT&T for business customers RIM has finally posted the OS download for the device. AT&T is lagging behind in OS versions at this point, considering Rogers launched with OS and T-Mobile launched with OS and we already know RIM is well ahead of that as well with current OS sitting at or higher. In any event, if you for some reason feel the need to reload your OS on your brand new AT&T 9700 the files are there for you to do so.

FileScout for BlackBerry Version Released!

Fresh from being a finalist in the BlackBerry Developers Challenge, FileScout for BlackBerry has just been realeased and is now available for all to download. Matthias, the developer behind FileScout is always looking for ways to improve FileScout for the end user and is always open to suggestions for for making it better. This time around some nice changes have been implemented so be sure to have a look at the list:

What's new?

  • Display of thumbnails in search result (if thumbnail display is enabled and images are in the 'FileScout Image Cache')
  • Thumbnail- Options: New Button to generate all all thumbnails for all images on your device (incl. the SDCard) - this operation can take a while till it's completed - please be patient!
  • When resizing images to device resolution size you can now select to keep the aspect ratio of the original image. If this option is selected, then FileScout will cut (left & right or top & bottom) of the image so that it will fit to your device screen resolution.
  • User Defined resolution (image resizing) can be now be max 9999 pixel [but it's recommended not use more then 1200px]
  • Support for DesktopManager Backup & Restore (FileScout settings)
  • A '[W]' in the Screen Title indicating that the background threads (required for Search and other extended features) are still running (after FileScout is started) - once the threads are completed the '[W]'will disappear.
  • Integration in the RIMs FileExplorer Application: a 'Explore with FileScout' MenuItem is added
What's Fixed?
  • Search files in the current Directory only function fixed to be usable multiple times
  • Potential OutOfMemeory Error during start of FileScout (when the thumbnail store is getting too large)
  • Accessing OS5 System Folder for Bold, Bold2, Storm and Storm2, RIM confirmed that they made the System folder in OS5.x read only so files can only be viewed, not modefied.

As always, FileScout remains a donationware application so if you use it, enjoy it, please be sure to offer up a donation to Matthias for his hard work and efforts.

BlackBerry Bold 9700 Arriving in AT&T Stores

It looks like some AT&T stores have already started receiving Bold 9700 units. The device is already available for business customers, and should be widely available on November 22nd. The Bold 9700 is one of the most anticipated devices to date, and in the words of Ferris Bueller "If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up". If you haven't already grabbed one up from T-Mobile, then you only have another week or so to wait so hang in there.

If you're looking to get ahead of the game, it appears as if AT&T has made the 9700 OS available for download as well. We saw a similar situation when the Rogers OS popped up in the forums before the device had launched, but this time the OS is officially available from a carrier site. The OS is which is and older version than both the Rogers and T-Mobile devices.

Colorbeat Game for BlackBerry Smartphones

I came across this game this morning, and after playing for way too long I have to say it is overly addicting. Colorbeat is a crazy Brickbreaker/Bejweled/Snood mix where you try to elimate the line of balls on the top of the screen. The catch is that the "bouncing" ball swaps colors with a ball it comes in contact with, making it harder to know what will happen. The balls build up and move down the screen, and if you don't knock them off quick enough, the game ends when they hit the bottom. Overall Colorbeat is a very cool Brickbreaker alternative. It is available for all devices running OS 4.5 or higher. Colorbeat is on sale in the CrackBerry App Store through November 30th for $1.99.

Review: Urbanspoon for BlackBerry Smartphones

Where I used to live, the choices for dining were slim. It’s not always a bad thing; every Monday night was wing night at our favourite hang out. Since I moved to the West Coast, there’s almost too many to choose from!  Part of me wants to stick to familiar places, another part says to venture out and see what else is out there, still another part says to stop going out so much and save the money for a new BlackBerry. After trying to figure out what everyone feels like having to eat, there’s still the decision between the usual place or a new one. At this point, someone may get fed up and decide to order a pizza. Before you surrender to the salivating scent of pepperoni and cheese, grab a spoon…Urbanspoon that is.

At the BlackBerry Developer Conference 2009, Kevin gave us the heads up on Urbanspoon. The application helps you decide where to dine, based on the neighbourhood, cuisine and your budget. We’ve seen it in commercials featuring the ” SighPhone”, but now we users and abusers have the opportunity to search for places to stuff our faces. Grab a napkin and read on!

DevCon 2009: Enter the RIM Matrix - Apps Downloaded From BlackBerry App World in Real Time!

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

Going through the leftover footage we grabbed during the BlackBerry Developer Conference last week in San Francisco, I stumbled upon the above clip I recorded in the hallways of the conference area. It's pretty geeky cool - RIM had a flat screen set up with what I dubbed the "BlackBerry Matrix."

The monitor showed the logos for apps being downloaded from BlackBerry App World in real time (though it may have been more like real time plus a one minute delay). It was mesmerizing. What you don't see in the video above is that if I just would have turned around for a second, the camera would have caught about 20 people huddled around the monitor just staring at the screen for minutes on end. The BlackBerry Matrix had us.
