Happy Thanksgiving from CrackBerry.com!

Happy Thanksgiving to the CrackBerry Nation. I'll be off eating my way through the day with my family, and hope you all will be doing the same. Its not often that I have an excuse to eat more than one dinner and double dessert, so I take full advantage of the holiday. If you can handle it, try to put the Berry (or Berry's) away for a bit and spend some time with family and friends. Don't worry - we'll still be here tomorrow when you get back, so a day away from us won't kill you :-)

NY Times Releases Free BlackBerry Application For Tour, Bold, Storm and 8900

Ronen over at BerryReview spotted the new NY Times BlackBerry application is now available for download for free from their site. Previously the NY Times had only offered a home screen launcher which led to their web site. The new application allows for offline reading, but sadly it's only supported on the BlackBerry Tour, Storm 1, Bold, and Curve 8900 - every other device just gets redirected to NY Times mobile site.

Google Apps Connector Gets Updated

When Google first announced their Apps Connector their main focus was to be placed on those companies that were running a BlackBerry Enterprise Server with a couple hundred BlackBerry smartphones attached to it. Google quickly realized that users of all sizes were taking on Apps Connector and found they needed to grow their support sizes to what is now 500 users per BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which is double the previously supported number. Have a look at the features and see if it's a fit for your business.

Overview of features:

  • Messages sent to your Gmail inbox are pushed to your BlackBerry within 60 seconds.
  • Emails read/deleted on your BlackBerry are marked as read/deleted in Gmail, and vice-versa.
  • Synchronize BlackBerry folders with labels in Gmail.
  • Search for email addresses and phone numbers of other users on your company domain.
  • View your Google Calendar schedule on your native BlackBerry application, with one-way synchronization from Google Calendar to your BlackBerry device.
  • Contacts in Gmail are automatically synchronized with your BlackBerry address book
  • BlackBerry Professional Software is now supported

Google Apps Connector is great for businesses who are looking to save some money on their networking cost but it does still fall short in some areas of PIM function especially when it comes to two-way sync of calendars. Here's to hoping that Google will see the need and get to work on that.

Beta eBay Application for BlackBerry Smartphones Now Available

I have to admit I've been waiting on this one for quite a while. When we saw the eBay app in action at the Developers Conference, we were told it would arrive by the end of the month and it actually popped up on time. The beta eBay application for BlackBerry is now available via BlackBerry App World. You can search, bid, buy, watch items and more all from your device. The app gives you the option of adding items to you calendar so you don't miss the end of an auction, and will also send you alerts if you are outbid. You can even add your PayPal account so you can purchase items right from your device. Keep in mind that this is a beta, so if you have any bugs or feedback to report, you can do so at blackberry.com/supportforums. I'm sure I'll be spending more time than usual (is that possible?) on eBay now with this app, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Head to the link below to download.

Review: Gym Technik NextGen for the BlackBerry

I don’t know how some people do it; I know I haven’t had much luck. To those who are able to fit a healthy lifestyle into the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I salute you. Excuse after excuse run through my head; I’m too busy, I’ll start tomorrow, I’ll just pick something up on the way home. It almost sounds like I’m a contestant on the Biggest Loser (which I watch), but that’s how I feel. I’ve started to make the change and I have the support of my wife and son behind me. I can also use my BlackBerry as a guide and tracker.

Just over a year ago, I reviewed Gym Technik and their web mobile site, which offered its services as a workout tracker. They’ve grown leaps and bounds, providing health and nutrition tips, tackling Oxygenfit integration and lifestyle advice. Earlier this month, Kevin gave us a taste of Gym Technik’s brand spanking new app, Gym Technik NextGen for the BlackBerry. Imagine having access to hundreds of workouts and exercises, as well as track your body stats on your smartphone spotter. I’m excited to get the rest of my life back on the right track and equally excited to have all the help that I can get.

Interview with Fabian Heuwieser, BlackBerry App Developer

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

If you follow me on twitter (@crackberrykevin), you may have caught wind of the fact that I'm in Europe right now, hitting up Paris first for a few days and now stuffing my face with pizza in Roma. More articles will be popping up over the next week or so with some of observations I have made in terms of BlackBerry in Europe, so stay tuned for that.

The first BlackBerry highlight of the trip was getting to meet app developer Fabian Heuwiser in person. Now, the video above is not of me interviewing Fabian, but rather our pal Nan Palmero, who met Fabian in Germany on a recent trip for a beer. It just so happened that Fabian was in Paris the same weekend I was, so he ran over and met me at the Galleries Lafeyette late Saturday afternoon at the 1st floor Dom Perignon bar (every mall in the world should have one of these) while Miss CrackBerry continued to shop. We didn't have time to conduct a formal interview, so props to Nan for getting this video done up for BBCool. Watch it above!

Regular readers of CrackBerry.com will be familiar with Fabian's apps, such as ForceRadioOn, LaterDude Pro, TyperSpeed and the historically popular VibandRing. You can check out all of Fabian's apps here. Fabian has been working on a new CrackBerry mobile launcher as well, which we'll be launching here on the blogs next week. Keep it locked to CB to catch it when it drops. Great meeting you Fabian!

Get Last.fm On Your BlackBerry, Kinda..

The CrackBerry tip line has been hot today with our users letting us know about the "new" Last.fm application that is available for BlackBerry smartphones. Now we totally love our tipsters, so we're gonna put this up but just to clarify a few things. The app is not new, it's actually been available for a while and the reason why it's been low key so far is the fact it only supports US (AT&T, T-Mobile) and UK BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Curve 8900's.

Not a huge outreach there with such limited support. But, here's to hoping all the press Last.fm has received forces them to update the application for newer devices. Making it available to even more carriers would certainly take the cake as well. For those of you that can use it, you like it? Let us know in the comments folks!
