BerryReader for BlackBerry now available - Google Reader client with loads of features - 50% off through Sunday!

Bellshare has been hard at work and have just released another great app. This time it comes in the form of an RSS reader with BerryReader. BerryReader is a great Google Reader client that has loads of features. I've been searching for a decent Google Reader app for ages and this one totally fits the bill. Features include:

  • Access your All Items, Starred Items, Shared Items, a single feed or a single folder for reading
  • Automatically update in the background every 15, 30, 45 minutes, 1 or 3 hours
  • Manage (add/remove) subscriptions from your device
  • Quickly toggle an article's Starred, Like, Unread and Shared labels or edit the article's tags for later filtering.
  • Read the current list even while offline, changes to labels and tags will be cached and automatically synced when network coverage is regained
  • Get notified whenever new articles are available (Includes custom LED color support through BerryBuzz)
  • Integrates into the device's messages list showing a BerryReader item whenever new articles are available
This app really has some great features and the updates will keep coming. BerryReader is available for $9.95 (a bit steep, but totally worth it for the sync and other features) and a 7-day trial is available. If you pick it up before Sunday using the code berryreader50 you can save 50% (this code only works in the mobile app store or Superstore client). You can grab it at the link below or via our recently-updated on-device CrackBerry App Superstore client.

Tether for BlackBerry Review

Review of Tether for BlackBerry Smartphones

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

Tether by definition is:

  1. (noun) a cord that anchors something movable to a reference point, which may be fixed or moving.
  2. (noun) an application that allows you to access the Internet on your computer anywhere there is cellular coverage, through your Smartphone.

Today, I will be reviewing the latter of the two, as I don't think anyone wants to hear how well my new surfboard leash (a.k.a. tether) has been working out for me. For those still in the dark...not to worry, just "hang loose for a minute" and I'll do my best to get you up to speed. Tethering, is the use of a mobile device, such as a BlackBerry, to supply Internet access for another device (i.e. computer), which is otherwise unconnected, using the Smartphone as a modem. This can be done through Bluetooth wireless technology or cables (such as USB). Now that the technicalities are out of the way, let's get to the meat and potatoes, or as we say here in the Islands...Fish and Poi.

SmrtGuard for BlackBerry Review

Review of SmrtGuard for BlackBerry Smartphones

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

Have you ever misplaced your Blackberry? You start back-tracking in your mind, thinking to yourself, "Where do I last remember using it," while the sweat starts to form on your skin. The next thought on your mind might be, "When did I last back up my data, and why did I keep putting off adding password protection to it?"

I had an experience with one of my first cell phones where I lost it in a snow bank and ended up finding it a week later. Fortunately all I really had lost were the contacts on it, and there weren't that many on there at the time. Now with my Blackberry, I know how much information I have on it, and how much I'd hate to lose it. Fortunately for cases like these, SmrtGuard brings us some assurance.

WordPress for BlackBerry 1.3 Released

The good folks at WordPress have blessed us all with another update. Anyone who uses WordPress to maintain either a personal or business blog is sure to love the new additions added with the v1.3 release. Having been using the application for a while now, it's been fun to watch it grow and it's turning out to be one the top applications out there for folks looking to do some mobile blogging. New stuff with the v1.3 release include:

  • Option to load more comments, not just the latest 100
  • Ability to load comments by status (all/spam/pendings)
  • You can now edit the comment details (Author Name/E-mail/URL)
  • Option to manually set the video-size when using VideoPress service
  • A much requested formatting toolbar that allows you to bold text for example
  • A new word count feature is shown on the post/page write screen
  • You can now submit bug reports and feedback from within the app
  • Multiple improvement to how Stats are handled
  • Improvements on the photo resizing options and a new jpeg encoder is now being used

This stuff may not mean a whole lot to users out there not interested in WordPress. But for those who rely on it, it is indeed some nice changes to the application. Be sure to update if you've been using WordPress for BlackBerry in the past.

Leaked T-Mobile roadmap shows off nameless BlackBerry launch in September

Ahh, roadmaps. Sometimes they are great in giving us a few at a lot of upcoming devices for some carriers and other times they fail to deliver on the real details. This one, while interesting fails to deliver for us in the BlackBerry world. While the focus here from the source Androidspin is that of well..Android devices we here at CrackBerry couldn't but help notice that RIM logo sitting amongst the crowd.

Sadly, the leaked road map lays no claim to which device exactly it is that we should be on the lookout for. Given a guess, I'd say it was most likely to be the BlackBerry Pearl 3G but that, has been brought under fire by a few of my colleagues who shall remain unnamed so as to not tarnish their rep. However, if I'm wrong-- which I could quite possibly be, I'm not gonna worry about it too much cause really I'm hoping for it to be something a little more interesting than a device I've had for over a month now.

So that said, what device do you all think it may be? Maybe something with BlackBerry 6 on it? I truly hope so. Possibly the BlackBerry Pearl 3G? It's certainly possible considering no US carrier has launched it yet. Sound off in the comments and here's to hoping it's some super, duper secret device that RIM has kept hidden in the deep, dark bowels of Waterloo never to be seen before unless called upon.

SocialScope for BlackBerry Review

Review of SocialScope for BlackBerry Smartphones

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

With a tagline like "a mobile inbox for your social networks", and stats reporting that users find it "more important than the Inbox, Brick Breaker, and the Browser", it's no wonder that from those who have been graciously allowed into the over-extended private beta, I've heard mostly love stories for SocialScope.

I'll admit that the multitude of not-yet-privy-to-the-beta users often look at me like I'm crazy, and maybe they're right. I mean, there is nearly zero support for this app. You can attempt to send SocialScope a suggestion email and debug file from the Settings menu, but that typically generates an auto-response saying, "Thanks for taking the time to send feedback, we really appreciate it ... but don't expect to hear back from us." Try to engage them via Twitter, and it's most likely to lead to nowhere. There is a Tumblr blog ... but you won't find consistent post, only a developer's response to all the backlash.

Despite the negativity, I still tell anyone who asks that this is simply one of the best BlackBerry apps I've ever used, mainly because of the social media integration. It is a large part of what fuels why the device rarely leaves my hand. (I don't plan to turn this into "My top apps for accessing Twitter from your BlackBerry", I will say that my consistent second and third choices are UberTwitter and the official RIM Twitter App.)

Twitter for BlackBerry Review

Review of RIM's Twitter for BlackBerry Application

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

*Please note: This review was conducted prior to yesterday's "official" release of version 1.0.0.45. The judges have kept that in mind when providing feedback and you should too in terms of judging the reviewer.*

If you're on twitter you must have definitely needed to access it from the BlackBerry at some point, and most probably have been using some app for the same. The official Twitter for BlackBerry app got a lot of attention when it was announced and when they opened up the beta. Now that its finally out in the open , we can find out if it does live up to the expectations of a twitter addict.

What's on a CrackBerry BlackBerry?

We all know that CrackBerry is the source of information for BlackBerry applications. There are so many out there. On CrackBerry, you can easily read up on new and updated apps, in depth reviews and even pick up applications from the CrackBerry App Store. While we do get to take a look at some incredibly interesting applications, one thing I get asked is, “What do you use?” My BlackBerry has seen plenty of applications cross its home screen. Some have stayed as they have been quite beneficial. Others, though they could be useful, simply didn’t work specifically for me. It’s not necessarily because they weren’t decent applications, but because of both space and need.

So with access to all of these applications, which ones made the cut? Which apps have found a home on our BlackBerrys? What’s on a CrackBerry BlackBerry? With a fondness for all apps on our devices, I asked the editors and writers what their top 3 installed apps were and why. Check out the responses after the jump.

RIM Conducting a "BlackBerry Messenger Stress Test" via the BlackBerry Beta Zone

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

OK, seriously?! This is too funny and just too awesome. So if you're a hardcore CrackBerry reader and BlackBerry enthusiast you've obviously heard about the BlackBerry Beta Zone, where you can apply to test out some of RIM's upcoming apps and stuff like that. It's no secret that basically every single member of RIM's BlackBerry Beta Zone, which launched recently, is already a CrackBerry reader/member. That's a great thing by the way - it means our community is really helping RIM to make their future offerings better.

But the latest mission to come down the BlackBerry Beta Zone pipe is just TOO funny.  They're conducting a BlackBerry Messenger Stress Test. Wonder where they got the idea for that one?! We'll take it as a HUGE compliment. I won't give out the magical PIN they are using for their stress test, but you can read the message they sent out below. I hope they video tape the whole thing and run it on their Inside BB blog. In case you missed it, you can check out CrackBerry's latest BBM stress test video above. Hopefully RIM will fix things up so when we do our next one my device doesn't brick itself. I hope the stress test goes well for them. But I'm not convinced doing it through the Beta Zone is stressful enough. It's about posting it to the CrackBerry homepage so you get that MASSIVE influx of requests that really seems to choke things. If they ever want our help for their next test, we're willing and able! Thanks RIM. You guys rock!!

Updated: SHOULD have been the best BlackBerry product placement ever! Larissa Riquelme cheers on Paraguay

* Update: Hmm... so yeah, apparently that's not a BlackBerry afterall and instead it's a Nokia E-71. You can't really blame us for missing that though... I just wanted to believe it so bad (I live for blog posts like this). It really is a complete shame, but I'm just going to keep pretending it's a BlackBerry Bold 9000 because that's wayyyyy cooler and would make me much happier. I guess I'll have to get Matt to post this up on NokiaExperts.com. Seriously though, who cares. It's Bold 9000-ish enough for me. Now we just need to find a way to top this for us BlackBerry lovers. Any suggestions? Oh, one last thing.  I BET Paraguay wouldn't have lost out last round if Larissa was using a BlackBerry instead. Butterfly effect. If she's smart she'll be rocking a BlackBerry the next time we see photos like this of Larissa. *

It's been a while since we've run any Celebrity BlackBerry Sightings here on the blogs, but we're back this round with one that's going to be tough to beat.... we're talking lingerie model Larissa Riquelm at the World Cup, cheering on Paraguay with her BlackBerry err.. prominently displayed. As you can clearly see in the photos, Larissa is rocking the BlackBerry Bold 9000. As much as she obviously loves her BlackBerry, she has been heard jokingly saying she'd like to replace the BlackBerry between her breasts with the World Cup. Seriously, I'm not making this stuff up. More photos below. I can't wait to read the comments to this one. Thanks to those who sent this in!

BlackBerry 9800 (Torch, Slider) - Caught on video, yet again

Been waiting to see some more of the BlackBerry 9800? Sure you have. Even if you're still not overly fond of the device, you're curious to see a little bit more of BlackBerry 6 being shown off on the device. This time, Salomondrin has taken the liberty of giving us an up close and personal look at the BlackBerry 9800. At this point, not much else can really be said about the device that hasn't really been said before. All just a little bit of eye candy for those of us waiting. Hit the break for the video and here's to hoping RIM unleashes BlackBerry 6 soon before we all have to riot in the streets with picket signs. No Torches though, as we'll still be waiting for release. Ya, I went there and I'm not sorry.

BlackBerry 9670 (Oxford) - No, it's not the latest revision but it's a good walkthrough [video]

Here's one to credit Salomondrin with today. As mentioned in the video presented here, this walkthrough is from a older hardware revision of the BlackBerry 9670 aka. Oxford. While the device is running OS 5.2 in the video, it certainly gives us an idea of what the growth was in the BlackBerry OS from 5.2 to BlackBerry 6. Of course, with it being a prerelease device we've already seen some changes in the hardware itself. Sal does a good job of highlighting those for us in the video. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show. Just please remember, this is admittedly not the final hardware revison. This a very early revision for sure. Video after the break for you all.
