Review: mProductive for BlackBerry

There’s nothing like being unorganized to ruin your quality BlackBerry time. What was originally thought to be some rare, uninterrupted (finally) one on one with your beloved smart phone has become a mad dash to get it organized. Your calendar doesn’t match your task list. Quick memos get lost in the shuffle. Dates for important conference calls are incorrect. You realize that when you swore a BlackBerry will help you become more efficient, that it wouldn’t do all of the work for you. As amazing as it is, it still needs you to be at the helm. Maybe you need to rethink your choice, maybe you need another device. NO! All you need is an app to keep you on the organized straight and properly filed narrow.

Last week, the mProductive application rolled into the CrackBerry App Store; and was mentioned in the weekly app roundup. I wanted to take a look at it and see if it was willing to do, with the ToDo’s, it was made to do. Phew! mProductive is designed to minimize what some may see as unnecessary steps to maintain order. Will it ease your messy mobile clutter, or will it simply add to the pile? Let’s take a look.

Check out this developer built web browser for the BlackBerry PlayBook!

As some of you all out there know, the BlackBerry PlayBook SDK was rather slim on content. No apps were loaded, no web browser was built in and it really is just the basics of what could be if developers showed it some love. Jerome, from BBerryGo sat down, looked at the SDK and decided the lack of web browser on the device was pretty lame.

So what does a BlackBerry developer do on the PlayBook when there is no browser? Make one of course. The above is the result of only two and half hours of work with the PlayBook SDK and while the PlayBook is sure to include a browser, this is a prime example of how fast stuff can be developed when given a strong set of developer tools to work with. Very nice Jerome. What do you all think? Some pics can be found after the break.

RIM Announces the BlackBerry Bold 9780 Smartphone!

FINALLY!!! For soooooo many of us traditional BlackBerry users out there, this is the new device from Research In Motion that we have been waiting for. Today RIM has officially announced the BlackBerry Bold 9780, the GSM successor to the popular BlackBerry Bold 9700. Compared to the 9700, the 9780 doubles up its internal flash memory to 512MB, gets the new 5 megapixel camera that's already found in the Torch and Style, and ships with BlackBerry 6 out of the box. As for the BIG question of WHEN CAN I GET ONE? the good news is it'll start launching on carriers around the world next month. Read the press release below and keep it locked to CrackBerry for more!

Carrier Updates: T-Mobile has announced a November 12th launch date at $129.99 on a two year contract. As expected, Rogers and TELUS have now also both confirmed release but no availability or pricing available for those two. Bell and Virgin Mobile users, November 2nd release date with pricing set to $139.99 on 3yr contracts.

BlackBerry Style Hands-On Video Impressions!

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

We'll be following up shortly with our full BlackBerry Style 9670 review, but in the meantime figured we'd throw up our initial hands-on video impressions to ease the wait for all the flip phone lovers out there. The BlackBerry Style will be available from Sprint starting this halloween, October 31st for $99.99 on a 2 year contract (see announcement). It's an attractive price for what really is a solid little BlackBerry. If you're a fan of flip phones, you'll definitely want to head into a Sprint store and put yours hands on one. I'm not sure photos or even video quite do the Style justice.

To be honest, my expectations for the BlackBerry Style were set pretty low. The pre-release photos that leaked out onto the net didn't show off the 9670 in the best of light, and heck, we even ran a poll on CrackBerry here asking readers whether the Style was Hot or Not, and a full 81% of respondents said Not and that RIM should just skip the 9670 and move on to the next device. Ouch. Painful. But after using the Style I can definitely see why Sprint wanted this phone and why RIM built it. With 512MB flash memory, BlackBerry 6, 5 megapixel camera and a decently sized screen, the Style has solid specs and serves up pretty snappy performance. There is a big user base of people out there who simply love the flip phone form factor and who want a full physical keyboard. The BlackBerry Style fills that void. Check out the video above to see the Royal Purple BlackBerry Style in action, and stay tuned for the full review!

Further Information/Clarification on the Free BlackBerry PlayBook for Developers making PlayBook apps

Following up the live demo of the BlackBerry PlayBook yesterday at the Adobe MAX conference and the news from RIM's Co-CEO about developers making PlayBook apps getting a free PlayBook, RIM has followed up with some more information on their BlackBerry DevBlog to help clarify things:

There has been a lot of excitement about the BlackBerry PlayBook developer promotion announced by Mike Lazaridis at Adobe MAX this week. Further details about the promotion will be posted on our developer site as soon as possible, but the plan is to provide one free BlackBerry PlayBook to every registered vendor with a BlackBerry App World-approved AIR application that is available for the BlackBerry PlayBook prior to launch. The applications will need to meet the BlackBerry App World Vendor Guidelines and there will of course be some terms and conditions that are principally designed to prevent abuse of the promotion, but the intent is to reward developers who are working on apps in advance of the product launch. We'll keep you posted. Now get building those apps!

So there you have it. Developers get your AIR applications on!! It would be great to see a BIG catalog of apps be available at launch, and this is definitely a nice incentive offered by RIM. Also nice to see from RIM... CrackBerry quotes on their BlackBerry PlayBook page. Keep it coming RIM... the future is looking bright.

HootSuite for BlackBerry updated to version 0.3.11

Being realistic here, HootSuite for BlackBerry got off to a bad start on the BlackBerry platform. A lot of users had issues with lag, being unable to import accounts or just overall getting the application to load period. HootSuite though, has worked hard over the little bit since the apps original released and has now corrected many of the issues users were seeing. If you have faith in the owl and feel as though their BlackBerry offerings will soon fall in line with their awesome web offerings give em another shot. Afterall, it is a beta release and bugs are bound to exist in beta releases.

Download the BlackBerry PlayBook ringtones and sounds!

Since the release of the BlackBerry PlayBook SDK many developers have been poking around to see what goodies they can find hidden within. Some of those found goodies were the BlackBerry PlayBook ringtones and sounds. Ok, they're not really ringtones, rather just system sounds. Either way, they've all been extracted in .wav format and posted up for download, we're not exactly sure who did it but, thanks!

CrackBerry Poll: How Many BlackBerry Messenger Groups do you belong to? What kind of groups are they?

How many BlackBerry Messenger Groups do you belong to?Market Research

BlackBerry Messenger. BBM. It's one of those hooks that keeps sooo many of us loyal to BlackBerry. Once you're connected to friends, family, co-workers and colleagues via BBM it's hard to not be. Over the past few months we've really seen Research In Motion start pushing BlackBerry Messenger on commercials and in advertisements, including one of its newest and best features, BBM Groups.

If you're reading this post on CrackBerry, I'm going to assume you know what BBM Groups are all about. If not, check out our BlackBerry 101 Lecture on BBM Groups. So the question I have today for CrackBerry Nation is how many BlackBerry Messenger Groups are you a member of? Cast your vote on the poll above and let us know!

Following the vote, let us know in the comments what kind of BlackBerry Messenger Groups you're part of. Is it a social group for friends and family? A group for the people you work with? Maybe it's a group for the sports team you play on. BBM Groups are one of those BlackBerry things that have really impacted my life for the better! So if you're using Groups in a creative way, be sure to share your story with the community.

Verizon preparing for launch of BlackBerry 6?!

Sure looks that way. First, James sent us an email to the tips line letting us know that his "email setup application" was asking to upgrade. Then, after that we got a few more folks asking the same thing so we know it wasn't just a one off fluke that it happened. BlackBerry 6 for the Bold 9650 and Curve 3G is inevitable but is this a sign that Verizon is finally getting closer to an actual release? All users who reported the upgrade were running the previously leaked OS Anyone else get this update as well? Seems it only happens when setting up a new BIS email account. Thanks everyone who sent this in!

BlackBerry PlayBook Live Demo! [video and photos]

It's a big week again for the BlackBerry PlayBook! If you were thinking the DevCon PlayBook announcement was smoke and mirrors due to the fact we didn't see a live demo, you can now rest easy knowing that the BlackBerry PlayBook is the real deal, and looks like it's going to kick some serious tablet ass.

RIM's Founder and Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis was on hand today at the Adobe Air Max conference, where he showed off the BlackBerry PlayBook LIVE on stage. We caught some of the screen caps from the livestream (see below) and we've got a partial video of the demo above (thanks bizbuzz3). Hopefully we'll have even more video soon. All I can say is WOW. Based on the DevCon hype we've had high expectations for the PlayBook and what the new BlackBerry Tablet OS will be able to deliver, and based on this demo it's looking like the end product is going to be SWEET. The full flash support and REAL multi-tasking seriously makes the iPad/iOS operating system look more like a kid's toy. It was pretty awesome to see Lazaridis start playing a full screen video, then minimize it back to the homescreen and watch it still keep playing while moving around the homescreen.

BIG NEWS too... RIM is taking apps seriously here, with Lazaridis announcing that developers who submit PlayBook apps and get them approved into App World will get a FREE BlackBerry PlayBook. OHHH BABY!!! Heck, back stage, even Martha Stewart said she loved the PlayBook. Check out the photos below and stay tuned for more!

All you need to do is create an Adobe AIR application for the BlackBerry PlayBook and get it accepted to BlackBerry App World and you'll get a free one. Those were the words spoken by Mike Lazaridis today at AdobeMAX while demoing the BlackBerry PlayBook live on stage. That's one sure way to get developers interested, free devices always wins. Hell, it's got me interested in actually diving into the PlayBook SDK to see what I manage. Any devs out there now just a little more interested?
