BlackBerry Curve 3G shows up in WIND Mobile inventory system

The other day we made mention of the fact the BlackBerry Curve 3G OS had shown up on the WIND Mobile site, despite the fact the carrier having never released the device. That of course, led us to think the BlackBerry Curve 3G would be arriving at some point on the Canadian carrier. Now, even more proof has shown up in the form of a inventory shot from the WIND Mobile internal systems. The BlackBerry Curve 3G has two slots in the inventory. Presumably, for different colored devices upon release. Still no date or pricing yet but it's another BlackBerry device added to the WIND Mobile lineup for users to choose from.

BlackBerry 101 user guide for the BlackBerry Bold 9780 now available for viewing

Research in Motion continues to gear up for the launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9780. A couple of days ago, the BlackBerry manufacturer released its demo of the soon-to-be-available Bold 9780. The 9780 will be the first Bold to sport OS6 right out of the box. Dummy units have begun to arrive in stores and the new Bold arrives at T-Mobile on November 17th.

Folks who want to get a feel for their future smartphone - or those who just want to see how OS6 will work on a Bold - should head over to the BlackBerry demos at RIM’s website. Since this is a demo and not a simulator, you won’t get to play around with the OS. But when it comes time to open up that box and start using your shiny new BlackBerry Bold 9780, you’ll be ready. Armed with the knowledge of how to set up and use your new device and raring to go.

Verizon adds two new BlackBerry Bold 9650 SKU's - BlackBerry 6 preloaded devices?!

There is no doubt that Verizon's preperations for a BlackBerry 6 for numerous devices is well underway. BlackBerry applications are randomly being updated, users are reporting some strange things happening with their PTT (push to talk) modules and well, we've already got a BlackBerry 6 leak for the Bold 9650 and Curve 3G anyways.

The most recent nod to the fact that launch is close could be the Verizon rebate forms which have mysteriously added two new SKU's for the BlackBerry Bold 9650. While it's not confirmation, it's speculated that the new SKU's are for the BlackBerry 6 preloaded versions of the BlackBerry Bold 9650. Just release it already, it's not like it's a huge secret any more Verizon. Your network already has many users running it.

Contest: Quadra by BerryMobi - Enter to win 1 of 25 free copies!

Quadra is a new creation from BerryMobi that is sure to please quite a few of you out there that like smooth and functional themes on your BlackBerry. Everything from the unique banner styling to the custom white icons is very professional, without being boring. Hidden today, hidden docks, hotspots... you name it and Quadra probably has it. And speaking of the hidden docks, this is a cool layout I haven't really seen before. Your homescreen starts out with 16 icons divided into groups of four and from there you can hide up to 12 (on Storm versions) or 8 icons (on non-Storm versions). It's a great concept, and leaves your screen open for all those awesome wallpapers you want to show off. I really dig the new battery and signal meters as well. You can really tell that a lot of work went in to developing Quadra, and it's a theme to be proud of.

Quadra is available on sale until November 3rd for $4.99. Head over to the CrackBerry store and check out all the pictures and read more about all the hotspots and details BerryMobi has included. This theme is available for BlackBerry 9700/96xx/89xx, 95xx/96xx, 9000, 85xx, and 9300.

Contest: BerryMobi sent us 25 copies of Quadra to pass along to our readers. Leave a comment below to be entered in the contest. One entry per person, multiple entries will not count. Contest ends this Sunday at Midnight PST!

Nova - Premium theme from Hedone Design

Hedone Design has a pretty awesome looking new theme available. Nova, was released yesterday and for those of you out there that like simple and basic themes, Nova might be right up your alley.

Our designers spent a lot of time coming up with an entirely new icon set like nothing you've seen before. Icons are symbols meant to convey a thought, an idea or a function in the simplest and clearest of forms – reminiscent of the designs of famed Braun industrial designer Dieter Rams and the original Mac icon set. Simple. Elegant. Communicative. Classic.

Nova also features a message and calendar board that can be accessed by simply navigating up. Individual items can be selected and viewed/edited with a single press of a button, keeping with the Hedone Design concept that form is not separate from function, but, if properly utilized, work with and from one another – the beauty IS the brawn.

Nova is available for a wide array of devices including Bold, Tour, Curve (no 83xx), Storm and Pearl 9100 series device as well as the BlackBerry Torch 9800. As per normal for most of Hedones work, Nova does cost $6.99.

AstraSync 4.2 Beta is now available - Exchange Activesync for BlackBerry

If paying for a BES really isn't in your budget, then maybe Astrasync is a viable alternative for you. Astrasync has just rolled out their latest beta release to customers and it's bundled with a ton of new additions and features to make the services even more of a compelling offer. The following improvements have been made in AstraSync 4.2 Beta over AstraSync 4.1:

  • Support for creation of meetings requests.
  • Email content encryption.
  • Kinetic scrolling of the message list on touch screen devices.
  • Leaner, faster message store system.
  • More performance settings for power users including control of Direct Push behavior, email truncation size, PIM status checks and Auto Discover.

We previously reviewed Astrasync and it has always been one of those offerings that we seen as a cost effective way to get BES like services at a lesser cost. Well worth a look into if you need what they offer.

animClock by Toysoft - A customizable analog clock, screensaver, and more!

It can be handy to see the clock on your BlackBerry while it's charging, whether it's at night or maybe during the day while you're at work and your device sits on your desk. Until now you were pretty much stuck with the standard analog or flip style clock that comes pre-loaded with your device's OS if you wanted to do this. Now there is a new app from Toysoft that allows you to customize the charging screen however you like.

AnimClock is basically an analog clock that comes pre-loaded with a few different skins you can choose from.  Where it gets interesting is that not only can you choose which skin you want, you can also choose to show either a static background from your own images, or you can have it rotate through images in a folder on your device. You can even choose to just have a color as the background. If you choose not to show an image, animClock will also show some information along with the skinned clock you picked. This information includes your battery percentage, battery temperature, and date/time. All of this info can be toggled on or off as well, so you only see what you want to see.

It doesn't end there. You can click a link in the application's menu to get more clock faces. This takes you to the Toysoft website, where they have a few more skins you can download as well as complete instructions and some awesome templates for making your own. The only catch I saw was that in order to have the app automatically open when you plug in your BlackBerry, you have to also purchase MegaAlarm. Otherwise, you can just open up animClock manually either when you plug in or whenever you want a screensaver to display.

AnimClock is compatible with most BlackBerry devices, and is available for just $0.99 in the CrackBerry store. There is a free trial as well, so if you're interested but unsure about it you can try before you buy.

CrackBerry guide to Halloween apps

Scare the $%#! out of yourself with these spooky apps!

Boo! I scared you, didn’t I? No? Well how do you explain the fact that you just wet your pants?! That boo-tiful time of year is creeping up on us. The streets will be filled with little monsters running rampant; they appear out of nowhere, causing fear and panic. They’ll probably be wearing Halloween costumes too. Besides the typical Trick or Treat trek, there are many others things you can do while in costume. Crash a costume party, freak out the pizza delivery guy or even have fun with local law enforcement. If your costume doesn’t restrict the use of your hands, you can also feed your BlackBerry addiction.

“Aaaah it’s a ghost!” “No it’s some guy in a white sheet.” “Well how do you explain the eerie glow coming from underneath?” “He’s using a BlackBerry...”

You can use it as a flash light. Check in with Four Square (I’ve become the Mayor of Transylvania) or Tweet which house gives out the most candy on Twitter. But you can also do more on Halloween. Why not try out some spooktacular BlackBerry apps? They’re hard to come by, but we’ve unearthed some hauntingly handy applications.Welcome to the CrackBerry guide to Halloween / spooky apps.

BlackBerry Curve 3G coming to WIND Mobile?!

I always find it funny when carriers out their upcoming devices via their own websites. This time, it looks as though WIND Mobile customers will have the BlackBerry Curve 3G coming their way if the information on the WIND Mobile BlackBerry download page is correct. WIND has posted OS 5.0.0.977 for the BlackBerry Curve 3G which, isn't even in their current line up of devices. We've heard rumors of it before so it's not exactly a surprise but, still rather funny to see the OS before the device. Hopefully it'll show up at some point but as of now, nothing to report on other than the OS being found there. Thanks Vlad!

NHL Game Center now available in BlackBerry App World

If you're a hockey fan then maybe NHL Game Center is the app for you. The NHL has updated their wide array of applications and this time around Game Center got the BlackBerry treatment it deserved. As noted in the release, the application will come in three flavors.

  • NHL GAMECENTER™ -- a free mobile application that delivers live scores; live in-game stats for every team and player; a real time Ice Tracker™, which is a feature that shows the locations of goals, hits and saves on a virtual hockey rink; game photos; a full-season schedule; NHL standings; NHL player profiles; archived results and stats for the current season; searchable content; and a personalized experience.
  • NHL GAMECENTER PREMIUM -- a premium upgrade from NHL GAMECENTER offering video highlights, condensed games and live game audio in addition to those features found through NHL GameCenter
  • NHL GAMECENTER LIVE™ -- available today on BlackBerry smartphones on the Verizon Wireless Network, this best-in-class mobile application gives subscribers access to live streams of NHL games on their mobile device along with all the content available through NHL GameCenter Premium.

I'm sure many NHL fans will be glad to see this arrive. Shame about Game Center Live being only available on Verizon though. I guess that's what the Game Center free version and upgrade are for though, to make up the difference. You can grab the free version today, the upgrade will cost you $19.99 for the full season. Thanks Jeff!

Rogers BlackBerry Bold 9780 dummy devices arrive

With the official announcement from Research In Motion of the BlackBerry Bold 9780's existence comes the existence of the dummy devices that have been sent out to retailers. While Rogers has already indeed stepped up to the plate and confirmed they will be releasing the device, they forgot to include an actual date or pricing. In any event, we know from history that once dummy devices arrive launch typically follows shortly after. Pricing is of course still unknown but, we don't expect it to be any more then $150 on a new 3 yr contract.

Umpires Media Inc. launches the first baseball rules mobile app - You Make The Call

Need to brush up on your baseball rules knowledge with the World Series kicking off last night? No problem, the new You make the call app for BlackBerry smartphones has you covered. Check out the comments from their press release:

"For the first time ever, coaches, umpires and baseball fans can test their baseball rules knowledge at the ball park or on the go," said David Yorke, co-founder and CEO, Umpires Media Inc. "We're very excited to bring a great mobile entertainment experience to BlackBerry® smartphone users so they can learn more about the rules of a sport they know and love."

You Make The Call features a series of video challenges with three possible answers that users have 10 seconds to answer. Answers and explanations are provided and the key elements of play are reviewed. Players can win points for correct answers, see where they stand against other competitors and challenge a friend to match or better their score.

Having checked it out for the past mins before posting, it's pretty awesome. One thing to note though is that it is a fairly big application. It weighs in at 5.8MB. Still, well worth it for the fun and if you're slack on baseball knowledge it's a must have. Also, BlackBerry Torch 9800 users will have some troubles, it doesn't look to be compatible at this time. If you have issues on other devices be sure to comment, some folks are having issues with getting it to load correctly for them. I had to adjust the permissons to all say allow.

AT&T confirms red and white BlackBerry Torch 9800 coming in November

Just in time for the holidays and as expected. AT&T has finally confirmed the release of the red and white BlackBerry Torch for November 7th in their holiday press release. No pricing details were given but, safe to say unless they end up getting some holiday promotions attached to those devices, they'll be staying at the exact same price as the BlackBerry Torch that is already available on AT&T. Which means, if bought from AT&T they should roll in around $199.99 with a new 2 yr contract. Personally, I'm a fan of the red one. What about you all? Red or white for your BlackBerry Torch?

RealVNC and QNX collaborate to support terminal mode - aka, your native BlackBerry experience on the dashboard!

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

Regular CrackBerry readers are all too familiar with the name QNX these days, as it's the company that RIM acquired that developed the operating system that'll be hitting the BlackBerry PlayBook in the form of the BlackBerry Tablet OS.

Of course, QNX has been around for a long time and has done a lot of stuff in a lot of industries, including automotive where it's known as the leader in infotainment systems. With the QNX name now common in daily BlackBerry talk, we found it pretty interesting to see this video pop up on youtube this week from RealVNC, which shows off their collaboration with QNX on demoing their support for Nokia's Terminal Mode (I know it sounds complicated... check out their press release here). Check out the video - it's cool stuff. Having your native BlackBerry experience on the big screen like that is cool. Would love to have that!  Thanks to Dave for sending this in!
