Please note, quite a few of the themes I include in the categories are actually available for other devices as well. BlackBerry PlayBook - A quick look at the simulator

We've been messing around with the BlackBerry PlayBook simulator since the download links went live. Curiosity got the best of us, probably like most of you all that downloaded it and ran it. A few things to note about the release though for those who may be thinking about installing it but, have yet to do so. It's pretty slim on information. Aside from getting a look at the media player, the keyboad and some of the general layout of the device, not much else is shown off with the simulator.

It's still cool to play with mind you but, overall nothing is really revealed within the simulator unless you were really looking to get your hands on those BlackBerry PlayBook wallpapers. No apps are preloaded, no web browser is installed. Quite simply put, it's just the basics. Maybe even less. All that said, we should point out that none among us are BlackBerry developers. We may be missing some stuff that only a developer may see and appreciate but either way it's still cool to finally see some movement here. Click on through after the break for some more screen shots of the UI.

BlackBerry PlayBook SDK for Adobe AIR and simulators now available for download

* Updated: See official Press Release below! *

Since the announcement of the BlackBerry PlayBook many folks have been waiting to get a deeper look into what, exactly can be done with the device. App developers especially. Now, the BlackBerry PlayBook SDK for Adobe AIR app creation has been released and alongside it are the downloads for the simulators (Windows and Mac versions) for both. Of course, Research In Motion have marked both as beta's so you'll have to keep that in mind when exploring. We'll hopefully see plenty of updates for it over time but, for now this is the start of something good. Now, be honest. How many of you all are gonna download the simulator just to see what's up?

T-Mobile BlackBerry Bold 9780 arriving November 17th

T-Mobile is ramping up for their BlackBerry Bold 9780 launch. While the date is tentative and subject to change the documentation clearly shows November 17th as the expected date. It's stil rather odd that Reseach In Motion has made no mention of the device officially with launch expected across all GSM carriers next month. Kinda makes you wonder if one day you'll just walk into your carrier and the 9700 will no longer exist and the BlackBerry Bold 9780 will just quietly show up. Still now word on the AT&T front for this release but, any T-Mobile fans excited to finally have some form of confirmation the 9780 will be arriving?

TSN Mobile: Blackberry Edition beta now available for download

Into sports and looking for a great app to keep up to date on standings, scores and more? Why not check out the freshly pressed beta of the TSN Mobile app for BlackBerry. Previously only available to iPhone users, the TSN Mobile app has made the leap to the BlackBerry platform with the release of the first beta.

TSN brings all the sports information in its number one iPhone app to the Blackberry.

A beta test of the application, featuring thorough coverage of the five major leagues (NHL, CFL, NFL, MLB and NBA) was released in early October 2010. Many more sports will be added throughout the month, with a final release slated for early November.

Having tried it out on my 9700 the new app is great for all the essentials. However, installing it on my BlackBerry Torch led to some not so poitive results. I'm sure that will be corrected over time as TSN never claimed it would work on the Torch now anyways. Be sure to check it out though if you are looking for a great app to keep track of sports scores and more.

BlackBerry App World storefront gets an official launch

We mentioned back on the 20th that Research In Motion had finally enabled online purchases of apps from BlackBerry App Word but, today was actually the official launch of the storefront. Within the official announcement Research In Motion gave us some of the feature list currently enabled on the site right now:

  • Purchase apps directly from the website
  • Edit My World accounts to sync app downloads directly to the BlackBerry smartphone
  • Read and write reviews and recommend items to peers
  • Access purchased or downloaded apps from a computer  via the My World page in the  BlackBerry App World storefront

Since we first mentioned the update to the site, Research In Motion has put a lot of changes into effect as well. Better browser support has been impplemented and things seem a whole lot smoother know overall. How do you guys feel about it though? Will you use it more often now?

Pregnancy Pal for BlackBerry - Track weight, time contractions, and more

When you're pregnant, you just want everything to be as simple as possible. Pregnancy Pal from hayes.mobi is not only a useful tool to help track your pregnancy, it's also easy to use. With this app on your BlackBerry you can input your weight and it calculates your gain or loss and compiles the data in an easy to read log. If you enter your due date, Pregnancy Pal will place a countdown on your home screen in the message indicator area, as well as in the app itself. I think the coolest feature, and one I personally haven't seen before in a BlackBerry app, is the contraction timer function. It works like a stop watch in that you push start when the contraction begins and stop when it ends. Pregnancy Pal will not only time the contraction, but also the frequency and duration of each, and list all of them in a log. No more guessing at how long or far apart your contractions are. You can also customize the sort of both the contraction log and the weight tracker to suit your need.

Obviously this isn't an application for every BlackBerry owner out there. However, if you are expecting a baby, Pregnancy Pal would be very useful to have. Available for most devices, you can pick this one up for $2.99 in the CrackBerry app store.

Research In Motion now showing off the BlackBerry Style before it hits stores

Now that the BlackBerry Style is all official, Research In Motion and Sprint have been taking the device on the road and showing it to folks even before it gets into stores. Probably something that should have been done at DevCon but, hey we're not judging here. The fine folks over at Engadget had a NYC meetup and had the chance to get a little close with the BlackBerry Style. Of course, we'll be giving the device a full run through shortly here on CrackBerry but the lighting in the above picture does show off the device rather nicely. Be sure to check out the full spec sheet, image gallery and press release we previously posted if the 9670 is your Style.
