BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0.1.18 for Windows now available

Alright, we'll admit it. We did kind of miss this one previously. But that's only because we were busy playing with the new Desktop Software v2.0.0.64 for Mac. Luckily though, we have some community members who kindly let us know that the Windows version of BlackBerry Desktop Software also got a nice version bump up to v6.0.1.18. The only problem with this release is the fact that we do not have a change log to go with it. But hopefully some of you all out there can let us know what, if anything has changed in the comments. You can run the update manager for the desktop software or download it manually from the BlackBerry website. Thanks to Dave and Bandar for sending this in!

BlackBerry Desktop Software v2.0.0.64 for Mac now available

It's been a while since we've seen an update for BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac, and while it's been in the Beta Zone for a few weeks, RIM has made it officially available today. The updates include support for OS 6 devices, ability to switch devices, media sync and Wifi music sync. While it still misses a few of the features of it's PC counterpart, Mac users should be happy with the upgrades. Grab it from the link below.

Get in on CardStar's 12 Days of Christmas Contest

A while back we ran a post about the application called CardStar. It takes your membership/rewards cards out of your wallet and onto your device. You simply enter your barcode numbers into the app, and it instantly transforms them into portable cards. Open the app, select your card and scan away (make sure to have the cashier use a hand held scanner). CardStar is great for membership cards, rewards & loyalty cards, gym memberships and more. The huge database includes a lot of well known cards and more are added every day. One of the biggest complaints was the size of the app (3.6 MB), and I’m very pleased to announce that it has been downsized to 1.2 MB. They’ve also updated with any deals running for each store.

CardStar is available as a free download and during the holiday season they are running a 12 Days of Christmas contest. Every day you can click the in-app link and enter for your chance to win a new prize. The contest is already moving along so download the app and enter today!

ProOnGo Expense updated with new UI

One of my favorite apps for business, ProOnGo Expense, has just received a sweet update. If you've used the app before (if you haven't you really should) you know it was a bit of a pain to navigate around at times. Well the latest update brings a great new UI that includes a navigation toolbar. No longer will you have to use the BlackBerry menu items to get around the app. Instead, just click along the navigation bar on the bottom of the screen and you're good to go. ProOnGo is one of the top expense tracking apps there is for BlackBerry. It has all the features you could want, and the receipt reader is as good as they come. It really is an all-in-one for expense reports. The latest version is available now in the CrackBerry App Store.

QR Code Scanner Pro for BlackBerry

Barcodes are an integral part of our modern lives.  So much so that the Smithsonian Institute has within its collection the very first product sold by barcode, a 10-pack of Juicy Fruit gum (along with a Research in Motion Inter@ctive Pager 900).

If you've been paying attention, you may have noticed that I have a certain affinity for barcodes, Quick Response (QR) codes in particular.  These black-and-white squares pack a large amount of information in a simple and efficient form.  With a simple scan, users can be directed to web pages, share contact information, and even send emails.  Enter QR Code Scanner Pro.  It does what it says on the tin, does it well, and does it for free.

But all of this free functionality comes with a bit of a warning.

One click access to your barcode with My Barcode for BlackBerry Messenger

When wanting to add a contact to your BBM list, you have a couple of options available. You could exchange your email, mobile number or, for that “for a fortunate few”, your PIN. Unless you’re lucky enough to have an easy PIN to remember, you’re not likely going to be reciting it on command. When BBM 5.0 appeared, another way to share your contact info became available – barcodes. Now instead of rhyming off a combination of letters and numbers, BlackBerry users can walk up to other BlackBerry users and (in their best attempt to come off as suave and sophisticated) ask them to “scan me”.

While helping out many people in my office get their new BlackBerry set up, I couldn’t help but notice something. Those who knew nothing about BlackBerry still had a bit of difficulty getting their barcode to display (if you’re reading this guys, for the last time, go to your profile, and click on Show Barcode…). I almost wanted to install a screen capturing app to snap the image and set it as their wallpaper. Knowing not to tangle with a newly addicted BlackBerry user, I found another option: My Barcode for BlackBerry Messenger. This simple app simply displays your BBM barcode by effortlessly pressing on the app’s home screen icon. That’s it! It saves time, and a bit of frustration for new BlackBerry users. It’s also practically weightless, only needing a mere 4KB. According to BlackBerry App World, you need to be running OS 6.0 in order to use the app. You can pick up My Barcode for BlackBerry Messenger for free from BlackBerry App World.

AstraSync 4.2 out of beta, works with new free app Monitor

It was roughly a year ago when I reviewed AstraSync; a robust two-way synchronization application. Time and time again it has proven itself to be an effective alternative for those who look for BES-type services, without the BES-type cost (they even say they’re more reliable). Your calendar, email and contact data can be synchronized OTA with numerous Exchange ActiveSync compatible servers, including; Windows Live, Gmail and Microsoft Exchange. Back in October, we mentioned the availability of the AstraSync 4.2 beta, which offered an impressive list of improvements and add ons – including increased performance, content encryption and enhanced store system. Earlier this month, it was announced that 4.2 emerged from the beta world to offer users the following enhancements:

  • New: Create Meeting Requests - You can now create a new meeting request and send it to the attendees direct from AstraSync.
  • New: Email Content Encryption - Email message data is now encrypted on the device, providing greater security should your device be lost or stolen.
  • New: Kinetic Scrolling - Message lists in AstraSync now support kinetic scrolling to make navigating large folders faster and easier.
  • More: Power User Options - More performance settings have been added for power users including control of Direct Push behavior, email truncation size, PIM status checks and AutoDiscover.
  • New: Device Alert Profile Integration with Monitor - AstraSync now works with Monitor (A new monitoring program for BlackBerry) to give closer integration with the device OS.

That last feature is one of importance because it deals with one of the developers newest applications; Monitor. This free application helps you keep an eye on the performance of your BlackBerry. Through ongoing charting of your memory, battery life and reception, you can learn where you can make changes that will boost the operation of your smart phone. Monitor is available for BlackBerrys running OS 4.7 or higher.

Features:

  • Shows you how much memory you have left on your BlackBerry.
  • Shows you the status of your BlackBerry connections.
  • Shows you how much data you have sent and received.
  • Shows you exactly how much battery you have remaining.
  • Auto Starts Applications after a reboot.
  • Allows J2ME applications like AstraSync BlackBerry exchange sync closer OS integration.

Leaked OS 6.0.0.418 for the BlackBerry Pearl 3G

Here's another for the masses. Just like the others released today, this one is sitting at version 6.0.0.418. Again, like the others we're not sure what may have changed but, if you load it up be sure to back up your data before doing so.

*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

Dropbox for BlackBerry updated to v1.0.37

Over the weekend, Dropbox managed to squeeze out a new update for its BlackBerry users. v1.0.37 is now available for download via the Dropbox website and looking at the change log should address a lot of users issues with connections and permissions that were seen in previous builds. Oddly enough though, the change log actually looks unchanged from the last release so we're guessing they just fixed the underlying bugs within those changes.

  • saving non-ascii texts results in garbled text
  • handling of edge cases when running out of space on sd card and in device memory
  • open-edit-upload usecase wasn't working for devices with encryption enabled
  • share link freezes for some users
  • open-edit-upload usecase fails for files with non-ascii filenames
  • "would you like to allow logging" dialog shouldn't appear on first launch
  • on rotatable devices, in image gallery, the displayed/cached image is smaller than screen size (shouldn't happen)
  • app should ask for permissions in advance on first launch
  • app should support multiple third-party app associations for a given file type (e.g multiple pdf viewers)
  • music/video stops when screen fades out
  • user gets a "not enough room to write file" message when trying to open a file that's already open in docs2go

If you're having issues with your current build of Dropbox, the latest forums build download is suggested so be sure to grab it as soon as possilbe.

Leaked OS 6.0.0.418 for the BlackBerry Curve 9300

These leaks seems to come in pairs (or more) lately. Here we have OS 6.0.0.418 for the BlackBerry Curve 9300. Some more fun for Curve 3G users to get in on.
