Quick tip: How to change a contact's picture on BlackBerry Messenger

I'll admit I often get bored looking at the same old pictures my friends have as their avatars in BlackBerry Messenger. Some just don't change them often (or at all like myself) or I just don't like the picture they choose. I also have my wife's BBM on my homescreen (as seen above) and like to change up the image from time to time. I had to dig a bit to get this done since I had tweaked a few settings, so take a read through this quick tutorial if you're looking to change things up a bit.

BlackBerry holiday themes now supported in more regions

Remember those BlackBerry exclusive holiday themes we posted about a few days ago? The biggest complaint seemed to be that (for some reason) they were only supported in the US & Canada. We'll now the availability has been extended to more regions so you if you couldn't get your hands on them before, maybe now you can. I'm still not sure on some of the choices region-wise and why they aren't available worldwide, but it is what it is. They really are pretty sweet themes for the holidays. Head over to BlackBerry App World from the links below to see if your country is now supported.

Leaked OS 6.0.0.413 For The BlackBerry Style 9670

It's like a cat and mouse game here with the BlackBerry Style OS' it seems. .407 leaked then became official, now .413 is here, will it go official as well? Not likely just yet but, that's the joy of a leak. You get to mess around with it ahead of time. Be sure to back up your data before load it up folks, it's a leak and as such it remains untested for the masses.

*OS Disclaimer - Please Read: Keep in mind this is NOT an official release and as such is not supported by RIM or your Carrier. If you choose to install, do so at your own risk and only if you're comfortable in the process of upgrading and downgrading your device software. It is quite normal during operating system development for certain features to be crippled or disabled while others are tested, and these beta builds often reflect that. They are not always better. Depending on your BlackBerry comfort level, it may be best for you to wait for community feedback on a build before deciding to download and install for yourself or simply wait for the next official release. If you require support, you will find it in our CrackBerry forums via our extremely knowledgeable community base - do not contact your carrier or RIM for Beta OS technical support (their first course of action will be to advise you to downgrade to a supported OS). *

Doodle Jump v4.0 now available for BlackBerry!

I just discovered that a popular game for iPhone/iPod and Android is available for BlackBerry users as well. Doodle Jump is an easy to pick up game that is super addictive, and for the longest time BlackBerry users had to make do with imitations and lesser versions. The updated release of Doodle Jump, v4.0 has great graphics, smooth gameplay, and a new low price.

Gameplay is simple: Guide the Doodler on a springy journey up the never-ending sheet of graph paper to see how far you can climb. Leap from platform to platform, finding your way higher and higher using brilliant contraptions like springs, propeller hats and jet packs. Avoid broken platforms, menacing black holes, UFO s and baddies. Blast them with your nose balls!

Now you too can Jump, jump, jump to the top, top, top with Doodle Jump. Just be careful because like I said, it is really addictive. You can purchase Doodle Jump for just $1.99 from BlackBerry App World.

Bud Phone app offers free Canadian long distance, not drunk dialing.

I’ll admit that I had a bit of a chuckle when I found this the other day. According to Budweiser and freephoneline.ca;

“Talk is cheap. Really cheap. Like free cheap.”

Going live yesterday, the Bud Phone long distance solution is here! What the Bud Phone app offers, is free Canadian long distance calling. Yes, I said free and the service is open to residents of Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta. Bud Phone is available for both your computer and smartphone (BlackBerry, Android or iPhone). Now the mobile app is nowhere near as robust as the application on your PC or Mac, but it does integrate nicely with your BlackBerry Address Book, in order to access long distance numbers. It also has its own recent call log to keep track of those you have drunk dialled in the wee hours of the morning.

BlackBerry Desktop Software v6.0.1.18 for Windows now available

Alright, we'll admit it. We did kind of miss this one previously. But that's only because we were busy playing with the new Desktop Software v2.0.0.64 for Mac. Luckily though, we have some community members who kindly let us know that the Windows version of BlackBerry Desktop Software also got a nice version bump up to v6.0.1.18. The only problem with this release is the fact that we do not have a change log to go with it. But hopefully some of you all out there can let us know what, if anything has changed in the comments. You can run the update manager for the desktop software or download it manually from the BlackBerry website. Thanks to Dave and Bandar for sending this in!

BlackBerry Desktop Software v2.0.0.64 for Mac now available

It's been a while since we've seen an update for BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac, and while it's been in the Beta Zone for a few weeks, RIM has made it officially available today. The updates include support for OS 6 devices, ability to switch devices, media sync and Wifi music sync. While it still misses a few of the features of it's PC counterpart, Mac users should be happy with the upgrades. Grab it from the link below.

Get in on CardStar's 12 Days of Christmas Contest

A while back we ran a post about the application called CardStar. It takes your membership/rewards cards out of your wallet and onto your device. You simply enter your barcode numbers into the app, and it instantly transforms them into portable cards. Open the app, select your card and scan away (make sure to have the cashier use a hand held scanner). CardStar is great for membership cards, rewards & loyalty cards, gym memberships and more. The huge database includes a lot of well known cards and more are added every day. One of the biggest complaints was the size of the app (3.6 MB), and I’m very pleased to announce that it has been downsized to 1.2 MB. They’ve also updated with any deals running for each store.

CardStar is available as a free download and during the holiday season they are running a 12 Days of Christmas contest. Every day you can click the in-app link and enter for your chance to win a new prize. The contest is already moving along so download the app and enter today!

ProOnGo Expense updated with new UI

One of my favorite apps for business, ProOnGo Expense, has just received a sweet update. If you've used the app before (if you haven't you really should) you know it was a bit of a pain to navigate around at times. Well the latest update brings a great new UI that includes a navigation toolbar. No longer will you have to use the BlackBerry menu items to get around the app. Instead, just click along the navigation bar on the bottom of the screen and you're good to go. ProOnGo is one of the top expense tracking apps there is for BlackBerry. It has all the features you could want, and the receipt reader is as good as they come. It really is an all-in-one for expense reports. The latest version is available now in the CrackBerry App Store.

QR Code Scanner Pro for BlackBerry

Barcodes are an integral part of our modern lives.  So much so that the Smithsonian Institute has within its collection the very first product sold by barcode, a 10-pack of Juicy Fruit gum (along with a Research in Motion Inter@ctive Pager 900).

If you've been paying attention, you may have noticed that I have a certain affinity for barcodes, Quick Response (QR) codes in particular.  These black-and-white squares pack a large amount of information in a simple and efficient form.  With a simple scan, users can be directed to web pages, share contact information, and even send emails.  Enter QR Code Scanner Pro.  It does what it says on the tin, does it well, and does it for free.

But all of this free functionality comes with a bit of a warning.

One click access to your barcode with My Barcode for BlackBerry Messenger

When wanting to add a contact to your BBM list, you have a couple of options available. You could exchange your email, mobile number or, for that “for a fortunate few”, your PIN. Unless you’re lucky enough to have an easy PIN to remember, you’re not likely going to be reciting it on command. When BBM 5.0 appeared, another way to share your contact info became available – barcodes. Now instead of rhyming off a combination of letters and numbers, BlackBerry users can walk up to other BlackBerry users and (in their best attempt to come off as suave and sophisticated) ask them to “scan me”.

While helping out many people in my office get their new BlackBerry set up, I couldn’t help but notice something. Those who knew nothing about BlackBerry still had a bit of difficulty getting their barcode to display (if you’re reading this guys, for the last time, go to your profile, and click on Show Barcode…). I almost wanted to install a screen capturing app to snap the image and set it as their wallpaper. Knowing not to tangle with a newly addicted BlackBerry user, I found another option: My Barcode for BlackBerry Messenger. This simple app simply displays your BBM barcode by effortlessly pressing on the app’s home screen icon. That’s it! It saves time, and a bit of frustration for new BlackBerry users. It’s also practically weightless, only needing a mere 4KB. According to BlackBerry App World, you need to be running OS 6.0 in order to use the app. You can pick up My Barcode for BlackBerry Messenger for free from BlackBerry App World.
