Skype Mobile for BlackBerry updated to v1.4.0.7

Not sure how many of you all out there are making use of Skype Mobile on your devices but if you are, you'll want to hit the Skype Mobile download page to ensure you have the latest version installed. It appears Skype Mobile has now released an update, letting loose v1.4.0.7. Sadly, at this time we have no change log or anything to go by but users in the forums are suggesting that it's just bug fixes seemingly and a minor UI enhancement. If you spot anything else, please let us know in the comments or in the forums so that we may pass the word along. Remember folks; this is only applicable to Verizon users, as the service does not work on other carriers. No mention of what devices the upgrade is applicable for either. Thanks Maurice!

Quick Tip: Customize your Universal Search results in OS6

If you're a big fan of Universal Search in OS6 you'll know that it can be a valuable tool. Getting to things quicky an easily just by typing a few letters is great. The one thing I didn't like however was that there were tons of results for things I didn't care to see -- like music (since I have none on my device), YouTube, podcasts and bookmarks. I loving using Universal Search, but having extra items show up in my results was annoying at times. Luckily there is an option to customize the search results to your liking. By going to Options > Device > Search you can choose which items to display in your results. Disable whatever you don't want showing up and be more productive when using Universal Search. You can tweak email addresses, YouTube, Google, BlackBerry App World, Facebook and loads more. Happy searching!

Keep track of upcoming events with CountDown Icon for BlackBerry

I've always been a fan of counting down to big events. Vacations, birthdays, weddings or what have you, I'm the guy who stuck the countdown timer on his Myspace page. I've tried many ways of keeping track of what events are coming up but sometimes things just get lost in the shuffle. Yesteday I came across a very cool app in the CrackBerry App Store that will solve all my countdown woes. CountDown Icon is an inexpensive, simple app that lets you place a countdown icon on your device. Set the event name and start time and fire it up. CountDown Icon shows the remaining days as an icon and can even pop up remiders as your see fit. Use it for big trips, birthdays, holidays, family functions and much more. CountDown Icon is available in the CrackBerry App Store for just $0.99.

BlackBerry App World 2.1.0.39 now available for download

BlackBerry App World has received another official update and is now available for download. This version has been in the Beta Zone for a few weeks and comes in the form of 2.1.0.39. Some new features in this go including:

    • In-app Payments - App World 2.1 includes support for in-app payments. How does this change the way you interact with certain paid applications as a developer or as a consumer?
    • Filtered Featured Items - Once you open this latest version of App World, you'll notice that Featured Items are seemingly more relevant to you. Well, we decided to change this functionality based on the feedback we received from you during the App World 2.0 Beta Program. Featured Items are now filtered by carrier and country to ensure that you are presented with the most relevant apps as soon as you open App World.
    • Extended BBID Login Session - We heard what you had to say during the App World 2.0 Beta Program last summer and decided to make some changes to the BBID functionality in App World. With this latest release, a single BBID login session lasts for 20 minutes, making it easier for you to download and install as many apps as you'd like in one go. Please remember that during the 20 minute BBID login session, you will not be prompted again for your BlackBerry ID to complete a purchase. If your BlackBerry smartphone gets in the hands of someone else, they could make a purchase that you're not aware of.
Things went well in the Beta Zone (as they always do) and this one is ready for public consumption. Point your browser to blackberry.com/appworld to get updated.

Poynt running on the BlackBerry PlayBook

The last few weeks there have been loads of apps cranked out by BlackBerry devs across the world for the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook. We've seen a few here and there and things definitely look impressive thus far. I was overjoyed when I saw one of my "go to" BlackBerry apps was spotted running on the tablet OS as well. Poynt is being ported for PlayBook and is shaping up to be even better than it's BlackBerry OS counterpart. Unfortunately no solid video showing things off, but we do get some great screens to see how things are coming along.

Poynt looks awesome on the tablet and you can be sure with all that real estate it packs in some amazing features. If things are what they seem, Poynt should take full advantage of all the PlayBook has to offer including (hopefully) GPS (as we discussed in the last podcast) for all it's location features. Hit the source link for some more screens.

New BlackBerry PlayBook video shows off highlights for business users

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

A new BlackBerry PlayBook video from Jonathan with the Product Team at RIM has just popped up demonstrating some of the uses the new tablet will have for business professionals. It's a short demo, showing mail pairing with your BlackBerry via BlackBerry Bridge, multi-tasking, viewing Microsoft Office documents, and secure access to business applications such as Flash-enabled dashboards from SAP BusinessObjects Explorer.

I think it's awesome how fast the information is shared between your BlackBerry and the PlayBook! It's also nice to know from an IT/BES point-of-view that everything is encrypted and that no corporate data is stored on the PlayBook.

BlackBerry 6 for the T-Mobile Bold 9700/9780 & Curve 3G added to BlackBerry Beta Zone

T-Mobile users who are part of the BlackBerry Beta Zone have reported getting notifications to sign up for the BlackBerry 6 beta testing for Bold 9700/9780 and Curve 3G devices. If you have any of those associated to your BlackBerry Beta Zone profile you'll want to check to see if you're eligible. A limited number of slots are currently open although, Research In Motion has not posted any version available for download as of yet.

We're gonna toss it out there that chances are it'll be a version or two behind what has leaked but if you're not down with using a leaked OS it's a good way to get BlackBerry 6 in an official manner. Who knows, maybe RIM will suprise us all and toss a version higher then what has been leaked thus far in there.

*UPDATE* - As noted and expected, it's OS 6.0.0.448

BlackBerry comes out as top smartphone in the UK

In what may come as surprising news to some, it seems that RIM have been doing pretty well in the UK. In a study carried out by the GfK Group, they have found that BlackBerry sales surpassed those of the iPhone over the Christmas holiday period.

The GfK figures are based on over-the-counter sales as opposed to vendor shipments, which is what many other research companies base their figures on. The figures say that BlackBerry took a 28.2% share of the market in 2010, then gaining 36% (selling 500,000 units) over the Christmas period, with more BlackBerry handsets being bought in December 2010 in the UK than any other smartphone. Most of the BlackBerry handsets shifted were on pay as you go, one in two for that matter. Pay as you go handsets have always been the popular choice over the Christmas period, so it does not come as much as surprise but the fact that BlackBerry came out tops shows that it is only going from strength to strength here in the UK. Taking a walk down the street you'll find a lot of the younger generation carrying around BlackBerry devices, with the most popular being the Curve 8520. Figures also show that the Torch 9800 is also proving a big seller on contract sales.

This is definitely some refreshing news for BlackBerry lovers and goes to show that RIM are definitely still in the game. With their 2011 road map known we can only see more good things to come from the RIM camp.

Accessory Review: BlackBerry HS-300 bluetooth headset

Like any dealer does, they provide the addicted the means to use again and again. Hey simmer down; I’m only talking about RIM and their BlackBerry smartphones. What did you think I was talking about?! If you browse through the CrackBerry accessory store, you will see that they also provide the accessories to help you continue to use. Sigh, I mean use your BlackBerry. They have BlackBerry branded cases, holsters, skins, batteries, chargers and handsfree headsets. They also have their music gateway, presenter and, yes, even Bluetooth headsets. That last one was pretty obvious, seeing as how this a BlackBerry HS-300 Bluetooth headset review.

The BlackBerry HS-300 bluetooth headset came out a couple of months ago and is RIM’s latest entry. It could be considered their entry level headset, but you should find it offers much more than other “entry level” headsets. It’s designed to help keep you chatting, legally, behind the wheel with a minimum charge. A mere 15 minutes worth of juice gives you 2 hours worth of jibber jabber. In other words; take charge with less of a charge.

Get OS5 ringtones back on your OS6 BlackBerry

Last night I was playing around with my Bold 9000 and noticed some ringtones I really missed. I started exploring options to get them installed on my 9780. I was open to just downloading a select few one by one, but I came across a much easier method that actually comes straight from RIM. There is an OTA link for the ringtone file from OS5 that easily installs the tones on your device. Just hit the link and you'll have a fresh set of OS5 ringtones on your OS6 device. The only catch is you'll have to install again should you reload your OS - small price to pay for having a huge bank of tones. To grab them for yourself just hit the link below from your device.
