It's almost March and that can only mean one thing, CrackBerry's 4th Birthday. To celebrate, the good folks over at SOTI, Inc. are having a 50% off sale from now until Friday March 4th. I'm a big fan of Pocket Controller-Pro and how it packs ten features into one small package. It's a pretty cool BlackBerry and PC application that lets you control your device using only your mouse, monitor, and keyboard. More importantly, it means you can access BBM from your desktop. If you've been waiting to purchase because of the $35.99 price tag, then now is the time to visit the CrackBerry App Store and take advantage of this offer.

Bank of America testing Mobile Wallet program using NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphones

We didn't expect to see much of NFC until the rumored 2011 devices hit later this year, but Bank of America is already putting the NFC technology to good use. They have started a trial of their Mobile Wallet program that will allow testers to receive a new battery door and microSD card to NFC-ize their device. The program lets users make payments using only their NFC outfitted BlackBerry (currently supported are the Curve 85xx, Tour and Bold series) anywhere MasterCard is accepted. The trial looks to start sometime this spring and is invite only. Great stuff!

Review: Smartphone Experts Micro-USB Car Charger

Want to win a Smartphone Experts Micro-USB Car Charger from CrackBerry.com? Keep reading for contest details.

Have you ever been on the road with a dead BlackBerry? It's no fun. No phone calls, no FaceBook, no Twitter, no Vlingo Safe Reader to read your emails and texts aloud to you. No nothing. For a BlackBerry enthusiast (the proper term is "addict," but enthusiast sounds so much better), this is a horrible situation. The solution: get a car charger. Ah, but which one; there are so many.

The Smartphone Experts Micro-USB Car Charger with USB Port is a mouthful of a name, but it filled a need I didn't even know I had. The car charger is your basic unit that plugs into the car's power adapter - sometimes called the cigarette lighter. It even glows blue when plugged in. The other end attaches to any device with a micro-USB port. This includes the BlackBerry PlayBook, Torch, and Bold devices to name a few.

In addition to the charger plug, you also have access to one additional USB port to charge many, many other devices. Just the other day, I found both my BlackBerry and Bluetooth headset in desperate need of charging. I grabbed the tiny USB charging cable that came with the headset and my BlackBerry and headed out the door. After about an hour in the car, both were good to go.

For multiple charging options on the go, you can't beat the Smartphone Experts Micro-USB Car Charger. A decently long cord, glowing blue indicator light, and the additional USB port make this a must-have for any BlackBerry user on-the-go.

More photos and contest details after the break.

Details on BlackBerry Internet Service 4.0 leaked

The next progression in BIS-land is 4.0 and it looks like we have some good updates to look forward to. N4BB snagged a doc that shows off the upcoming features of the latest BIS. As usual it's not a ton of little upgrades, but rather a few mid-sized ones. Updates look to include:

  • Integration with BlackBerry ID (BBID)
  • Improved BIS End User Communications
  • Automatic Login improvements
  • Support for new service tiers
  • Google Calendar Improvements

No official date for release just yet but it doesn't seem like it would be too far off. Typically the rollout seems to happen over a few weeks to various carriers and we get no real word of a launch. Overall some pretty good stuff in this update. Hit the source link for more info.

Facebook for BlackBerry v2.0 images leak out

Are you a Facebook for BlackBerry user? If so, then this news should make you happy. Facebook v.2.0 images have now shown up online and while I'm not a Facebook user myself the app looks like it's recieved the attention it deserves finally. Some changes noted for the v2.0 release include:

    • Facebook Chat
    • UI Refresh
    • View friends’ profile info, pages and friends lists
    • Improved core app integration

The built-in chat is a rather interesting addition considerig how many apps there is already out there for Facebook. Hopefully, when released this will solve a lot of the issues that exist in the current release. Rumored release date is set for May 2011, but it looks as though a beta release may show up earlier. Possibly in the BlackBerry Beta Zone.

BlackBerry smartphones already running Android apps?!

Yes, we've all heard the rumors about the BlackBerry PlayBook possibly having the ability to run Android apps but have you heard that BlackBerry smartphones are already running them? If the data from ShopSavvy is in anyway accurate then they'd have you believe it's already happening. As noted on their blog they have been tracking devices checking out their services via Flurry, an analytics service and according what they found within that is that at least three BlackBerry devices have been running their Android app:

    • BlackBerry 8300 ran ShopSavvy on January 31, 2011
    • BlackBerry 8600 ran ShopSavvy on January 17 and 24, 2011
    • BlackBerry 8520 ran ShopSavvy on February 7, 2011

That's all fine and dandy but -- what is a BlackBerry 8600? Previously and during testing, the BlackBerry Curve 9300 was named the BlackBerry 8600 but that has long since been changed as the device came to market. So that really only leaves a few conclusions. Either RIM is working on making Android apps run on the BlackBerry Platform and they are using a really old pre-release BlackBerry for testing or -- someone is having some fun with messing around with their browser identification strings and making it look as though they are using a BlackBerry device when indeed, they are not.

Quick Tip: BlackBerry 6 - Do you double flick?

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

Love them or hate them, the BlackBerry 6 views are here to stay (until BlackBerry 6.1 at least). If you use them you really are getting the most from your device, but if you're like Kevin and myself, you try to stay clear of them at all costs. If you are a power user that likes to get the most out of all the views, here is a quick tip for navigating BlackBerry 6. You don't have to expand the panes to scroll around - just go to the far right or left icon, do a quick "double flick" and you will scroll to the next view. In the same manner, a "hard flick" down opens the full view for you. A bit confused? Check out the video above and see how it's done. Happy flicking!

Contest: Leave a comment to this post for your chance to win a FREE BlackBerry PlayBook Accessory of your Choice!

What's the first accessory you're going to buy for your BlackBerry PlayBook?online survey

Ten days ago we saw some slides leak out that showed the names and suggested pricing of cases and other accessories for the upcoming BlackBerry PlayBook. Things have been making progress since then as our e-commerce team has begun receiving their ordering info for getting BlackBerry PlayBook accessories in stock. With the demand for the BlackBerry PlayBook and accessories looking to be pretty huge, you'll want to keep your eyes glued to ShopCrackBerry as we start getting more and more PlayBook-specific accessories into the store and make them available for pre-order. Pre-ordering will put you at the front of the line so that when items arrive in stock and we start shipping that you'll be the first to receive them. And with free shipping on orders of $50 or more (Continental US) and pricing below MSRP, it makes sense to order online in advance vs. buying in store when you pick up your PlayBook.

PlayBook Accessories Poll: With the PlayBook being an all new genre of BlackBerry device, we're curious to see what accessories are going to be your must-haves. A case for protection? A bluetooth keyboard for easy typing? A charging dock? Something else? Vote on the poll above and let us know in the comments.

PlayBook Accessory Contest: Drop a comment to this post letting us know what PlayBook-specific accessory you want (based on the ones we already have in store available for pre-order) and you can win it! Contest ends this Sunday at midnight PST.

PlayCreator for BlackBerry PlayBook - Turn your tablet into the ultimate sports whiteboard

There has been a constant flow of BlackBerry PlayBook apps hitting App World in the last few months, but only some really catch my eye. PlayCreator is one of those and probably the one I'm most excited about so far. It's one of the most "no-brainer" implementations of the PlayBook thus far and frankly looks pretty sweet. PlayCreator essentially turns the PlayBook into a sports whiteboard. Gone are the days of the whiteboard clipboard and messy dry-erase pens. PlayCreator has boards for hockey, basketball, football, soccer and more. Use multi-colored markers to draw out plays complete with erase, redo and undo. This looks to be an awesome app for coaches and players alike, and for just $0.99 is a steal. PlayCreator is a perfect example of how the PlayBook can be used in real-world situations. Check out it out in BlackBerry App World for more info.

BlackBerry Case Study - a look at the BlackBerry Solution in health care (video)

[ youtube link for mobile viewing ]

You have to love the video activity from RIM these days... last week we saw a new youtube video showing the awesomeness of BlackBerry Messenger as a tool for dating (via the powerful BBM Flirt), and this week it's a BlackBerry Case Study looking at how BlackBerry Smartphones are improving one-to-one patient care at UPMC Mercy Hospital. It's an interesting video - definitely worth checking out. And with the upcoming release of the BlackBerry PlayBook I'm sure we'll see the benefits of BlackBerry extend even further into health care (they've already shown off a couple of medical apps for it).

Which rumored 2011 BlackBerry Smartphone are you most looking forward to?Market Research

In the last few weeks we've seen quite a bit of the rumored upcoming devices for 2011. If all goes as planned (or what we think is planned) we'll see some great new Smartphones in 2011 to along with the much-anticipated BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. I know personally I'm looking forward to the Bold Touch and really can't wait to get my hands on one. In addition we hope to see a new generation of Curve, a first-ever lower end full display Curve Touch, the full out monaco/monza (aka Storm3) touchscreen and Torch 2. There will be plenty to go around, and aside from limitations of your carrier, plenty to choose from. So what we want to know is which device are you most looking forward to in 2011? SAP CIO Oliver Bussman talks BlackBerry PlayBook in business (video)

As the BlackBerry PlayBook release draws closer the buzz is growing around it as well. In this video from last week Fox snagged a quick interview with SAP CIO Oliver Bussman. As he explains here, the PlayBook is a step ahead of the game as it is business ready and capable of multitasking unlike other tablets (I'm still not a believer that it really is "true" multitasking though - see my comment below. Yes, it runs multiple processes at once, but that's different than multitasking from a user perspective... I want to be able to browse a webpage on half of the display while being able to browse my music collection on the other half - actually doing two things at once).

Oliver praises the size and ease of use of the PlayBook and also talks a bit on the business aspects. The key question addressed here is "can I really run a billion dollar business on a tablet" and the answer is "absolutely". Thats good enough for me. Gotta love how excited the reporter is to have a pre-release BlackBerry PlayBook in her hands too. She's almost CrackBerry excited!  Thanks to Dave for sending this in!
