Quick Review: Fixmo Extend for BlackBerry

Some of us here at are fans of the products that Fixmo Inc offers. In the past, we’ve had an in-depth look or two at their ever evolving Fixmo Tools application. That app just keeps getting better and better the more functionality they shove into it. For example: through Fixmo Tools you can, via WiFi, remotely print directly off of your BlackBerry. Through Fixmo Extend, you can make yourself even more mobile. It allows you, much like Tether for BlackBerry, to use your BlackBerry as a gateway to the tubes – I mean – internet. Currently only supports Windows PCs (XP or higher), which is definitely a lack for Mac users.

So if you find yourself away from any WiFi network, and you need the power of your laptop, you can give Fixmo Extend a try. During the beta, you have 1000MB to play with in a month. In order to use Extend, you need to install software on both your computer and your BlackBerry. Oh and a USB cable might help as this is required to complete the connection.

All it took was a little fiddling with the APN settings until I was up and running, powered by BlackBerry and Fixmo Extend too. On my laptop, the Fixmo Extend App would display data transfer history, which was represented by a line graph. I could also click on the Export Log option to view traffic in detail. This allows you to keep an eye on your usage. According to Fixmo Extend, it requires 636 kb to load the CrackBerry homepage. Speeds while on the go were comparable to speeds while connected to my WiFi at home. I am hoping to see Fixmo Extend make use of Bluetooth in the future, so I can leave the USB at home. No word yet on pricing for the app (or even final features) when it comes out of beta, but hopefully it will be competitive to Tether. You can pick up the Fixmo Extend beta app for free from the CrackBerry App Store. Keep reading for more screenshots.

You can track your mileage via GPS, time via call logs, and regular expenses by taking pictures of your receipts, all right from your BlackBerry! BlackBerry 101: Hiding (and Unhiding) pictures

[ youtube link for mobile viewing ]

Man: Is your uh, is your wife interested in... photography, ay? 'Photographs, ay', he asked him knowlingly.
Squire: Photography?
Man: Snap snap, grin grin, wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more?
Squire: Holiday snaps, eh?
Man: They could be, they could be taken on holiday. Candid, you know, CANDID photography?
Squire: No, no I'm afraid we don't have a camera.
Man: Oh. (leeringly) Still, mooooooh, ay? Mwoohohohohoo, ay? Hohohohohoho, ay?

This classic Monty Python sketch, "Nudge, Nudge," demonstrates exactly the kind of picture you might want to hide on your BlackBerry. Obviously it's not the only reason for hiding a picture on your device; it's just the first thing that comes to mind when talking about it.

Hiding a picture is easy. From your Pictures, find the picture you want to hide. Press the menu key and select properties. Aside from useful information such as file size and dimensions, you'll also see a check box that says Hidden. Checking that box will instantly hide your picture.

It's the un-hiding part that's a little difficult - as it should be. If you hid a picture, you obviously don't want people to find it. Let's just hope you remember the file name and where the picture is when it comes time to unhide it.

BattleShips by Spice Updated to - Adds Multiplayer support and changes name to Battles UNLIMITED

I'm a big fan of Spice Labs and their highly addicting games and puzzles. Growing up, BattleShip was my favorite game to play with my Dad. Being able to play it on my Bold brought back so many happy memories. Since I switched to the Torch, I've been missing my daily fix. I'm happy to say that the last few updates have not only improved game play but added support for OS 6 devices as well (excluding the Style).

As much as I loved playing the original, the one thing it lacked was competing against a human opponent. Sometimes the computer seemed to win a little too much; don't you think? Well have no fear because one now you have the option to play against other humans over the internet using WiFi or your data plan to connect to their servers.  You can also play against the computer or with your friends by sharing your device. It even offers the ability to chat with your opponent in multi player mode. How cool is that?

DE-LEXION by walker themes - On sale for a limited time

I get bored looking at the same thing day in and day out. With as many times as I glance at my BlackBerry screen in a day, the OS 6 theme got old for me very quickly. I couldn't wait for themes to be available for my 9670 and was checking the forums every day in hopes of some to try. When they did start rolling out, I was ecstatic. That is until I saw the prices on some of the themes. As often as I change my themes, I just couldn't justify paying more than a dollar or two for a theme. All that changed when I was introduced to DE-LEXION by Walker Themes.

When I first tested out the theme, I was so taken with the vibrant colors and bouncing icons (it's so much fun to scroll back and forth to watch them jump) that it took me a minute to even register the reflective images below the icons. No matter what five applications I chose to place on the bottom dock, the theme created a true reflective image of each application's icon. It's less than 1 MB of file space, which is great for someone like me who has more themes than one should on their device. When you add the Weather/Profile slot and the hidden Today Plus menu to all of this, you have a very fun and unique theme.

The De-Lexion theme is available in blue, green and pink and is currently on sale for $3.99 (usually $5.99). It's compatible with all BlackBerry OS6 devices as well as OS5 for the 9700/9650/8900, 9500 and 8500/9300.

SquareTrade drop tests the BlackBerry Playbook

[ youtube video link for mobile viewing ]

Dropping your brand new BlackBerry PlayBook to test its durability isn't really suggested. But luckily for us, there are people out there interested in these sorts of things and as such, they've done the dropping for everyone. SquareTrade, which offers extended warranties for your BlackBerry PlayBook has done a drop test video for us all. Sit back, press play and check out the destruction. Also, if you head on over to the YouTube page and leave a comment about what you want the to drop next -- you'll be entered to win some warranty coverage. This is of course, their contest -- not ours. So please, don't leave any comments below expecting to win; you'll need to hit YouTube to enter.

If you're worried about dropping your PlayBook when you're out in the elements, you can always plan ahead and "drop" it in a BlackBerry PlayBook case ahead of time. OtterBox is the ideal choice, but if you are a bit more careful you can get away with something like a zip sleeve as well.

Official OS for the BlackBerry PlayBook now available

* Update from Kevin: So it seems Adam's PlayBook is posessed. He downloaded the .1746 update as shown above, but it wouldn't actually install on his device. Now he's even seeing .1758 available for download, but same thing, it won't install. So these are updates that are NOT AVAILBLE to all right now. Not quite sure what's going on here. So for now .1710 is still the latest official available. *

Just this morning we saw an official update to OS for the BlackBerry PlayBook, and now it looks like another update is available as well. OS is showing for some users as an OTA update now. I did say I wouldn't mind having an OS update once a day, and having two in one day isn't so bad either. No word of what's new in this version, so check your device for available updates and then head into the forums to post your findings.

Review: Pac-Man Championship Edition

Pac-Man Championship Edition is a new take on an old classic. Our little yellow hero, Pac-Man still runs around a maze of dots; and his ghost enemies still chase him. What is different is the speed of this game. Each of the game's five modes features a time limit of either five or ten minutes. If that seems a short amount time, just try lasting that long. As the game progresses, Blinky, Inky, Pinky, and Clyde the ghosts chase Pac-Man faster and faster. Just staying ahead of the ghosts is a challenge.

Adding an extra dimension of difficulty, Pac-Man Championship Edition features an enormous maze. Each half of the maze is its own mini-board. Once Pac-Man eats all of the dots on one side, he'll have to eat a fruit to unlock the dots on the other side. You'll have to go back and forth from both sides to eat all the dots. All the while both avoiding - and chasing - those ghosts.

Pac-Man Championship Edition has five challenge modes to keep you occupied. Each one has a slightly different challenge to overcome. In Extra Mode 1, you'll have to travel long distances with little protection from the ghosts. In Challenge Mode 2, you'll play in the dark with only the dots and a glow from Pac-Man and the ghosts to assist you.

Supported on a variety of BlackBerry devices - from the 8300 to the 9780 and points in-between - the app features some nice touchscreen support for the BlackBerry Torch, as well. Swiping up, down, left and right tells Pac-Man where to go; there is also an option to tap where you want him to go. An unexpected surprise, the game fully supports portrait and landscape mode, and has no problem switching in-game.

With its colorful, ever-changing mazes and characters, catchy music, and challenging game play; Pac-Man Championship Edition will make a nice addition to the games on my BlackBerry.

Review: Seidio Innocase Surface and Lock Holster for 9650

The hunt for the perfect case appears to be a never ending struggle for me, some days I want something with max protection, some days I want a super slim case, and others I just simply want the device as is, with no case. While looking for a slimmer, form fit case I stumbled upon the Seidio Innocase Surface for the BlackBerry 9650, and was intrigued at the fact that it had a locking holster available that allowed the device in the case to still fit. Needless to say, curiosity killed the cat, I placed the order and was definitely eager to check it out.
