How your phone can help before and during a hurricane

Ed. Note: We're re-upping this since Hurricane Harvey decided to make life difficult on a lot of folks in Texas. Stay safe out there, everybody. And if you're told to evacuate, DO IT!

Hurricane season is here, a storm threatens, and your smartphone is now one of the most important tools in your preparedness kit.

You don't want to be caught unaware when a hurricane hits, and as we've learned recently, they can arrive unexpectedly, and in unexpected places. Hopefully anyone in the direct path of Hurricane Harvey in Texas has already gotten out of the way. For folks on the outskirts, though — and everyone else who lives where a hurricane or typhoon can happen, there's still plenty of storm season left. And there's no better time than now to bone up on some of the best ways to keep current on what's out there, and how to stay safe if a storm comes your way.

And just like with everything else, our smartphones now play an integral part with that.

I've lived on the Gulf Coast my entire life. I've been through storms. God willing, I'll never go through another. But either way, I'll be ready. Let's take a look at a few ways you can be, too.

BlackBerry rolls out new versions of Hub Suite+ core apps

As we near the end of the month, BlackBerry has now rolled out some updates to most of their core apps on the Google Play Store . This time around, most of the updates go beyond just bug fixes and performance improvements, so you're going to want to get them downloaded as soon as possible.

BlackBerry Hub

  • Additional Hub integrations: we now support Skype Lite, Zalo, and KakaoTalk accounts.
  • Improved Search capability: Quickly search all messages with the same sender or subject from the More Actions menu.
  • "Help Receive Emails Quicker": With this newly-added setting, you can receive emails quicker when BlackBerry Hub is running in the background.
  • Other minor e-mail improvements: readability of wide tables in e-mail messages for the "Resize email to fit screen" setting, and improved readability of e-mail messages in Ukrainian language.
  • Notification enhancements: The notification tray remains open after tapping an action icon in a Hub notification, enabling you to triage multiple Hub notifications at a time.
  • Admin enhancements: S/MIME can now be configured to use LDAP for certificate lookup when used in a managed profile. Using app config in Hub+ Services, an admin can configure it such that Chrome in the work profile uses single sign-on. This allows their users to only enter their username/password once per session when navigating internal work sites using Chrome.

BlackBerry Keyboard

  • Quick Modes make it easier for you to toggle between multiple modes via a toolbar. These modes include:
  • Dictation Mode: Access to voice input and settings for dictating messages.
  • Emoji Mode: Quick entry to the emoji mode to select from hundreds of available emojis and the most recently used ones.
  • Text Selection Mode: Access to improved fine cursor control with a joystick-like controller to give you better maneuverability. Also, easily select, select all, cut, copy and paste text, URLs and emojis.
  • Clipboard Mode: An advanced clipboard which remembers all your copied text, URLs and emojis so you can easily paste previously copied content.
  • Password Keeper Integration: Easily enter your stored passwords in login fields, if you use the BlackBerry Password Keeper with its Autofill feature.

Grid Customization: Now under Launcher settings, you can take more control over the home screen of your BlackBerry device. There are 3 added customizations to change the launcher:

  • Icon size: Allows for 5 different sizes.
  • Grid Columns: Change the number of columns from 4 to 7.
  • Grid Rows: Change the number of rows from 3 to 7.

Calendar & Contacts

  • Work Week View: A new work week view with adjustable start date/end date.
  • Event Edit and Creation Enhancements: Landscape view now available for editing and creation of calendar events.
  • Contact Icon Refresh: New look for the contacts app, with redesigned icons throughout.

Productivity Tab

  • Add Item: Each tab now also has an add item button, making it easier to work within the productivity tab.
  • Free/Busy Time: Updated UX tweak to show your free or busy time with a nice visual indicator.

  • Usability Enhancements: You can now choose to save an image to a specific location on the phone.

Privacy Shade

  • Reading Window Resizing: Need to hide or see a bit more on the screen? We've added the ability to choose between three different sizes for the viewing area.
  • Turn the lens off and use Privacy Shade as a screen dimmer
  • Choose whether to allow the Privacy Shade to cover your phone's virtual keyboard

In addition to the noted updates, there are also a few others such as DTEK and BlackBerry Power Centre that have also been updated. Hit up the Google Play Store and check for updates right now, you should see them all listed and ready for download.

Sprint now rolling out AAN982 update for the BlackBerry KEYone

If you purchased your BlackBerry KEYone from Sprint, now is a good time to go ahead and check for updates. A new update, marked as build number AAN982, has started rolling out to Sprint customers. As expected, it has all the right parts for the August Android security update but there could be specific fixes to Sprint, by way of the Sprint Mobile ID app, which had a bug causing it to reinstall Sprint pre-loaded apps repeatedly whenever one was removed or disabled.

Sprint noted at the time the bug was found that that wasn't the way the app was supposed to work and promised an update would be released quickly to address the issue and with this update now rolling out, it seems like those fixes might be in here as well. We've reached out to BlackBerry Mobile and Sprint to confirm and will update this post when we know for sure but in the meantime, you can see if the update is there and waiting for you now.

How to update software on the BlackBerry KEYone

  1. From the homescreen, tap the launcher icon to enter the application grid.
  2. Under the Apps section scroll down to the Updates application.
  3. Tap Updates app to view current Build Number
  4. Manually check for updates by tapping Check for updates now text.
  5. Your device will prompt you with new updates or display your System is up to date

Once downloaded and installed, which should only take a few minutes, your device will be running build AAN982. If you're not seeing it as of yet, hang tight it will be along shortly. You can also swing by the CrackBerry Forums and let us know how the update went when you get it downloaded.

Get lifetime access to 2TB of cloud storage for only $49!

Our current, tech-obsessed world demands a storage solution for your multimedia data, the most convenient being cloud-based storage which you can access from anywhere. Most cloud-based storage services charge a monthly fee, which, over time, adds up to quite a fee. Those of you sick of subscription fees need a storage solution that requires a single payment for a lifetime of access. More importantly, you need cloud storage that is encrypted and can be accessed from all your devices.

Don't miss your chance to save big! Learn More

Right now, CrackBerry Digital Offers has a deal from Zoolz where you can get 1TB of cloud storage with instant access along with an additional 1TB of Cold Storage for that data that you want to keep secure but don't need to frequently access — yours for life for a single payment of $49.99. Does this seem cheap? It is! This is 98% off the regular price of $3600.

You will never be charged any extra fees, and you can access your cloud storage from multiple devices. Your data is protected with 256-AES encryption to better safeguard your stuff, and you can schedule backups and throttle bandwidth during uploads. Place files you know you won't soon need in cold storage — takes three to five hours to access — or place files you frequently need in standard storage that can be accessed instantly.

Grab a lifetime of storage for $49.99! Learn More

Considering 1TB of storage from other popular services costs about $10 per month, this deal will pay for itself in four months, and you can keep using it forever. Even if you don't think you need it now, you probably will need it in the future. Don't miss this great opportunity to snag 2TB of cloud storage for only $49!
