BlackBerry Securing IoT Devices in New Licensing Deal with Swiss Consumer Electronics Maker Punkt

BlackBerry has now announced their second BlackBerry Secure licensing deal. Swiss consumer electronics maker, Punkt Tronics AG has signed on to release BlackBerry Secure products embedded with BlackBerry cybersecurity technology in addition to the NTD deal, which was signed back in September.

"If 2017 has taught us anything it is that every device needs to be secured because any vulnerability will be found and exploited," said Alex Thurber, SVP and GM of Mobility Solutions, BlackBerry. "With cybersecurity becoming a concern for every household and enterprise, savvy manufacturers like Punkt are recognizing the value of protecting the integrity of their innovations and the resonance our brand has with consumers who are increasingly anxious about the security of the products they choose to bring into their homes and lives."

"At Punkt we're focused on using technology to help us adopt good habits for less distracted lives, and we do this with carefully designed and elegantly crafted products," said Petter Neby, CEO and Founder, Punkt. "By incorporating BlackBerry's security technology into our premium products, we can now offer customers the highest level of security, without compromising on the simple, modern design they love."

The announcement doesn't cover what products Punkt intends on bringing to market or which may be making use of BlackBerry Secure, but the company does offer a wide array of designer consumer electronics including the MP01 mobile phone, as well as their DP01 cordless phone, which offer minimalist styling.

Given the BlackBerry Secure licensing program is aimed at IoT products, it's safe to say Punkt has something new coming that will make use of BlackBerry Secure technology and since it's not a hardware licensing deal like TCL, Optiemus, and BB Merah Putih, it's probably not an Android phone or at least, not a BlackBerry branded one. Like the NTD deal, they'll just use the BlackBerry Secure branding.

About Punkt

Headquartered in Switzerland, Punkt. was established by Petter Neby in 2008 with the idea of bringing a breath of fresh air into the consumer electronics market with outstanding, timeless products designed to do their job, without intruding on their owner's time and attention. From the very beginning, renowned British industrial designer Jasper Morrison was on board as the company's art director. The name Punkt. is taken from the German word for 'point' or 'full stop/period', and was chosen to symbolise the way the company's products are built around simplicity, clarity and focus. Punkt. launched its debut product, the DP 01 cordless phone, in January 2011 at Maison et Objet in Paris. Since then, the company has continued to develop stylish, carefully designed and elegantly crafted electronics products aimed at people who want to be in charge of the technology they buy, and who understand the importance of subtle beauty in everyday life. The Punkt. product range includes a simple mobile phone, a cordless landline telephone, an alarm clock, a mains extension cable and a multiport USB desktop charger.
