BlackBerry has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Facebook

According to a new report published by Reuters, BlackBerry has recently filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Facebook (WhatsApp and Instagram) through the Los Angeles courts.

Reuters notes that online court records are of the claims not available at this time, but a comment issued by BlackBerry spokeswoman Sarah McKinney to Reuters stated:

Facebook and its companies developed "competing applications that improperly used BlackBerry's mobile messaging intellectual property"."We have a strong claim that Facebook has infringed on our intellectual property, and after several years of dialogue, we also have an obligation to our shareholders to pursue appropriate legal remedies,"

Over the years, I've wondered if BlackBerry would take action against some of the competing apps out there. I guess 'after several years of dialogue' they've finally decided to put some action in motion.

Court docs are now online via The Verge / Scribd, there's a lot to take in here as it spans over 117 pages. Additionally, Facebook has responded to the claims in a statement given to Cheddar by Facebook Deputy General Counsel Paul Grewal. "BlackBerry's suit sadly reflects the current state of its messaging business. Having abandoned its efforts to innovate, BlackBerry is now looking to tax the innovation of others. We intend to fight."
