How to get the Best Smartphone Deals

When it comes to mobile phones, it's a little harder to find an actual "deal" these days without the need to jump through a dozen hoops or switching your carrier. Unlocked phones are great in concept, but they can get expensive and not everyone has $1,000 sitting around to pick up a new phone with. Sure, you can finance it through your carrier, but then you're locked in again. Patience is the key here, but if you are really in need of something new, there's still a few ways to pick up a phone for less.

One of the easiest ways for Android fans is to check out Amazon's Prime Exclusive devices. These trade you a nice discount for a few pre-installed apps that you'd likely use anyways. If you shop at Amazon and have a Prime membership, odds are you're already going to use Shopping, Prime Video, and more, so who cares if they come pre-installed, right?

If you prefer to skip out on pre-installed apps, there are also some other big discounts to be had. From powerful devices like Samsung's Galaxy S10 lineup to the camera powerhouse that is the Google Pixel 3a, Amazon's assortment of high-end devices has really grown over the past few years. Each year we see more and more discounts on Prime Day for these devices, so we have high hopes that this year we see some more great offers.

Pre-loaded with Apps: Prime-Exclusive Android Phones

If you're ok with trading off a few pre-installed Amazon apps on your phone for a sometimes significant savings on your next device, Amazon's Prime-Exclusive phones are the ones to look at. There are a bunch of Android devices, many of them recent models, that are available as part of this program. It used to include lockscreen ads, but Amazon has since removed those and just installs useful things like the Amazon Shopping app, Prime Video, and a few others.

Amazon has been known to discount many of these models around big shopping events, and there's no way that it doesn't use Prime Day as another opportunity to reduce the prices. If you need a new phone for yourself or your kids, this is a great way to pick one up for less.

Powerhouse Devices: Samsung Galaxy S10 Series

It wasn't until recently that Amazon really started carrying more unlocked phones, and now you can buy Samsung's newest Galaxy devices with a U.S. warranty, which is huge. These are shipped and sold by Amazon, which means that you don't have to deal with any shady sellers or anything else. You can get the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, or go all-out with the Galaxy S10+ in a variety of color and capacity configurations.

Still rather new

Samsung Galaxy S10 series

Samsung's unlocked Galaxy S10 devices are some of the best out there, but they also come with a bit of a hefty price tag. We've seen a few deals on these already, and expect another big one to come during Prime Day.

The affordable king: Google Pixel 3a

Google and Amazon have finally put some of the past behind them and now you can officially buy the Google Pixel 3a at Amazon along with other retailers like Best Buy, Google's own store, and others. All three color options are available in both sizing configurations, and while we don't often see discounts on Pixels from Google, we may see them directly from Amazon, which would be amazing.

Finally available

Google Pixel 3a and 3a XL

It would be the first actual discount, and it's far from guaranteed, but there's a good chance we see a discount on the Google Pixel come mid-July.

Our budget pick: Moto G7

You can get a lot of phone for $300 or less these days. Motorola has been a leading name in midrange options for years, and that holds true with its excellent new Moto G7. There are a few sacrifices to be made here, but at the price it's really hard to beat.

Best overall

Moto G7

The Moto G7 has just about everything you could ask of a phone at this price. The software is clean yet clever with Moto Actions and Moto Display, and it's quick to recharge with Motorola's TurboPower charging. The G7 also has decent specs, including a Snapdragon 632, 64GB of expandable storage, and 4GB of RAM — and it finally charges over USB-C!
