Looking for an excuse to ditch that old projection or plasma TV that you have hanging around, at home? Prime Day may be just the push you need. Whether you want a 4K TV with all the bells and whistles of a premium TV or just something simple for the guest room, there are a few interesting options worth considering.

How to get the Best TV Deals

Remember that Prime Day isn't actually a single day. While the bulk of the deals will happen in a specific 24-hour period sometime in mid-July based on previous events, there are still a lot of sales leading up to it and a lot of sales that follow after. So if you're looking for the best TV deals on Prime Day, you should be prepared for anything that might pop up that month really. In fact, considering how hard it is to actually get the fast-flying deals on Prime Day before they sell out, this might be your best bet.

For example, during Prime Day, which occurred on July 15 last year, we saw a huge sale on the TCL Roku TV lineup. These TVs were one of the hottest selling TV series all of last year because they combined affordability with a built-in Roku and decent image quality. On Prime Day, several versions from 28 inches up to 49 inches dropped to the lowest prices we had seen. Not even a week later, we saw another huge deal on the 40-inch version of the TCL Roku TV. It dropped in price and came with a huge gift card.

Long before the Roku TVs became the best "bang for your buck" in TV sets, TCL was known for budget screens. During Prime Day 2017, TCL was the king of the non-smart TV, too. The big seller was this "32-inch screen for $100." That's a price point that turns heads and sells out in an instant. The TV itself wasn't anything to write home about, but if you need something for a playroom or basement or something like that, keep an eye out for more price drops from TCL's budget collection this year.

TCL wasn't the only brand making marks on Prime Day, though. Samsung has a huge lineup of televisions, and it was more than inevitable that a few of them would go on sale. Like I said in my article on whether or not you should buy a TV on Prime Day, the best sort of TV deal to look out for is on mid-range sets. These are the TVs that have 4K, maybe 4K upscaling, some decent HDR support, and a nice size on the diagonal between 40 and 60 inches. These are the TVs that aren't fully equipped with crazy-expensive tech but definitely won't disappoint. Samsung has several series in this price range. The MU6300 series, for example, was introduced in March 2017. The 55-inch version debuted at $798 and dropped to $600 for Prime Day. The other sizes saw a similar price drop and it was one of the first for the lineup. The 75-inch version even dropped by $500 as Amazon's last big deal of the day. We also saw deals on the MU7000 series and the MU8000 series both on Prime Day and in the days leading up to it.

Just before Black Friday 2018, Toshiba announced a new Fire TV Edition, which we saw some steep discounts on during the holiday shopping events. Odds are that Prime Day will bring some even lower prices to the sets, so you'll definitely want to keep an eye out. These offer Amazon's Fire TV OS built right in to a 4K LED. They come in a variety of sizes, ranging from 43 inches to 55 inches.

Streaming with Fire TV: Toshiba 4K LED Fire TV Edition

There's no shortage of options when it comes to ways to stream your favorite media these days, and Amazon happens to have its own. The Fire TV OS is Amazon's streaming media operating system that has access to popular apps like Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Now, and so much more. Until just last year, the only way to use Amazon's Fire TV was via a separate hardware piece that you plugged into your TV, but then the company worked with Toshiba to build the platform right inside your TV, making it even easier to stream your heart out.

We expect that Amazon will be pretty aggressive marketing and discounting these Fire TV Edition models from Toshiba during Prime Day. This will be the first Prime Day they are available, and odds are they will be the most affordable they've ever been during the event.

For the Roku Lovers: TCL 6-Series 4K LED Smart TV

TCL's Roku TVs just continue to get more and more and more popular each year, and there's a good reason for it. The sets offer a ton of features and performance for rather affordable prices. You don't need to buy additional hardware, switch between inputs, or juggle remotes to get things working, and that ease of use is something that you really could justify paying more for. We see lots of discounts on TCL TVs during the year, and this Prime Day we'd suggest keeping your eye on the 6-series, which is the company's latest sets.

Not everyone is in love with Amazon's Fire TV platform, and that's ok. Roku is a great alternative, and one that you may be using elsewhere in your home already. This TV builds the best features into it and being able to have just a single remote to control the TV and your streaming apps is great.

Preferred Brand: Samsung RU7100 Series 4K TV

For as long as I can remember, Samsung has made some of the best and longest-lasting TV sets on the market. The company has a very diverse lineup, though, with prices ranging from just a few hundred well into the thousands, so you'll need to do some thinking before you make your purchase. The RU7100 series TVs offer a bunch of great features, the specs people care about, and a price tag that doesn't require a small loan to afford.

Brand Preference

Samsung RU7100 Series 4K TV

This one runs Samsung's own Smart TV platform, which isn't really great nor terrible, it's just kind of there. You can integrate it with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, though, which makes it work a little better for you.

Amazon Recommends: Sony XBRX900F Series

If budget is a concern, Sony's XBR lineup may not be at the top of your list, but if you're looking for quality over anything else, it may be. In addition to the picture quality, you're also getting better speakers than most other sets will offer you, and tons of ports (like 4 HDMI ports!).

More Expensive Option

Sony XBRX900F Series Smart LED TV

Sony's XBR models have always cost more than most of the competition, but the quality and performance generally help justify the cost. These look sleek and will last you a long time, so consider spending the extra as an investment towards tomorrow.
