These BlackBerry KEYone launcher tweaks will amp up your productivity

You need to know about these productivity tips with the BlackBerry KEYone launcher.

The BlackBerry KEYone is built from the ground-up for getting things done. Dig into some of these tips on how to make the most out of the smart software customizations of the BlackBerry KEYone.

The BlackBerry Hub

The beating heart of BlackBerry is the Hub. This is where notifications from a wide range of apps and services can all come to be managed at one place. Custom notifications can be set to fire under specific circumstances, like when the boss shoots you an e-mail. Views can be filtered so you're only looking a single e-mail account, or if you only want to see unread messages. There's a lot to the BlackBerry Hub, so read up!

The Productivity Tab

Thanks to the Productivity Tab, you can get all of your most important information at a glance from any screen. Just swipe inwards from the edge of the screen next to the slim indicator, and you can see your latest messages, upcoming meetings, your to-do list, and favorite contacts. You have complete control over positioning, so you can put it to either side, or make the tab target bigger or smaller.

Actionable notifications

You can dive right into action with shortcuts built into notifications. This way you can answer a text message without having to dive into the Messages app first, or immediately share a screenshot after taking it.

Pop-up widgets

Every icon on the home screen with three dots below it can offer a preview without having to open the app. With a simple swipe up or down, you can see a standard Android widget pop up temporarily. This lets you dig into core functions easily without having to clutter your home screen with widgets. You can read more about pop-up widgets over here.

Shortcuts

Being able to interact with apps by way of widgets is handy, but for your most common tasks, this can still involve a lot of repetition. The BlackBerry KEYone offers another class of home screen items called Shortcuts. These dig into an extra level of function for many apps. Instead of just a miniaturized view of your calendar, for example, a Shortcut can immediately launch into creating a new calendar item.

These Shortcuts span contact management, media control, device utilities, and lots more. Not only can Shortcuts be activated by home screen icons, they can be launched by the physical keyboard or Convenience Key, too.

BlackBerry KEYone photography tips and tricks

The BlackBerry KEYone can take some phenomenal pictures. With these tips at your disposal, you'll be able to make the most out of your photographic opportunities.

There are certain baseline skills and sensibilities that are needed to take great pictures, and we're hoping we can introduce some of those here. Alongside a familiarity with the camera software of the BlackBerry KEYone and its advantages, you'll soon be snapping some great shots for Instagram.

Switch to Pro mode

When you first launch the BlackBerry KEYone camera, you'll be able to pick the default interface. For absolute control, go with Pro mode. This can later be changed by tapping the Mode button within the app. In Pro mode, you'll have a full set of tabs for tweaking white balance, exposure, shutter speed, ISO, and focus.

Remember, when you're manually tweaking these settings, you'll generally want a fast shutter speed for moving subjects and keep ISO as low as possible to avoid noise. Other considerations such as exposure are entirely up to you; play around take some shots that you otherwise wouldn't get when shooting with automatic settings.

Use the volume key to shoot

By default, the volume key will fire the shutter for your picture. This can often be more comfortable than tapping the screen. The feedback of a physical button can provide better confidence when shooting. Alternatively, you can dig into the camera settings and change the volume key to instead alter zoom levels, or just stick to media volume control.

Use the rule of thirds

It's worth your while to turn on guidelines within the camera settings. This makes it easier to compose a photo around the rule of thirds. That is, your points of focus should typically be where the guidelines intersect, slightly off-center on both axes. Aligning other photo elements along the four lines is also a widely accepted practice for taking good photos. Give it a try the next time you're lining up a photo. You won't be disappointed.

Double-press the On/off key to quickly launch the camera

Capturing the moment can be tricky when subjects are moving quickly. By the time you've unlocked your phone and launched the camera app, the opportunity may have passed. Luckily, you can launch directly to the BlackBerry KEYone camera by pressing the On/off key on the left side twice in quick succession. This works from the lock screen or when you're in any app. If for whatever reason you want to disable this feature, it's under Gestures section of the Settings menu.

Stabilize

Though the rear camera on the BlackBerry KEYone has electronic image stabilization to compensate for day-to-day camera shake, for your best shots, you'll want to keep things steady. In a perfect scenario, this would involve a tripod and mount, but that's not always practical. Resting the phone on a flat surface is the easiest way to do this. If that's not possible, hold the phone with both hands and brace your elbows against your body.

Be sure to check out the BlackBerry Mobile Instagram account to see some stunning photos shot on the BlackBerry KEYone.

Five hidden BlackBerry KEYone features you might not know

The BlackBerry KEYone has a few handy features that aren't immediately obvious. We'll show you some of the best ones you might not know.

To get the most out of the BlackBerry KEYone, you'll have to dig deep. There are hidden features that will bring your productivity to the next level, and we're going to help you find them. Some of these you might know, some of them you might not. Take a look and discover them for yourself.

Double-tap to lock the screen

Double-tapping a blank area of the home screen will immediately lock the device. This can be more practical if the BlackBerry KEYone spends more time on your desk or in a cradle than in your hand, when the On/off key on the left side might be more convenient. The double-tap can also wake the BlackBerry KEYone. Though this might not be great if you still have to use your fingerprint or PIN to unlock anyway, it can be handy if you've enabled Smart Lock, which skips authentication while within designated locations.

Double-press the On/off key to launch the camera

It's possible to map the camera app to the physical keyboard or the right-side convenience key, but there's no reason to, since by default double-pressing the On/off key will get you there too. This works even from the lock screen! Be sure to remember this one when the moment to take the shot is fleeting. This feature can be disabled in Settings under Gestures.

Switch to Device Search

By default, the keyboard lets you launch into apps and shortcuts when typing from the home screen. You may not have that many repeated actions to launch into, though. Or maybe remembering what all of those shortcuts are isn't worth it. For those that are doing something different every day, it may be better to set the keyboard to launch a Device Search instead. This will span content in your Contacts, e-mail, calendars, and help, not to mention offer the ability to extend search out to other apps.

  1. Press and hold on a blank area of the home screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Typing action.
  4. Tap Start a search.

Double-tap the Recent key to go to the last app

The Recent key (◻), just above the keyboard, lets you see all of your most recently-opened apps. Odds are in most cases you're just going back to the last one used though, and don't need to go rifling back through two, three, or four of the most recent apps. When you just need the last app used, double tap the Recent key and you'll jump right to it - no need to go rifling through the apps list.

Make the Productivity tab nearly invisible

The Productivity tab on the right side may be a distraction when working in other apps, even though it's only a sliver along the side of the screen. Dig into the features a bit though, and you'll notice you have complete control over the opacity of the tab. It can be almost completely transparent and still be activated.

You'll still need to have a rough idea of where it is, but if you make it large enough, it shouldn't be a problem. Or, you could shrink it to even further minimize the visual footprint. You'll be able to enjoy all of the benefits of quick access to e-mail, calendar items, and more without any of the visual noise.

Top BlackBerry KEYone keyboard tricks that will change your life

The BlackBerry KEYone has some subtle but incredibly helpful keyboard features that you might not know about.

The keyboard is a defining characteristic of the BlackBerry KEYone, and we want to make sure you're getting the most out of it. Here are a few features you may not have heard about. With any luck, they'll help you be more productive and get around the BlackBerry KEYone more easily.

Swipe right to left to delete your last word

During the tutorial, you'll have already learned that the BlackBerry KEYone keyboard is touch-sensitive. Swiping upwards on the keyboard itself will insert whatever prediction suggestion comes up above on screen. This same touch sensitivity is used for other shortcuts, however. You can swipe from the right to the left anywhere on the keyboard while typing to delete your last word.

You can achieve something similar by pressing and holding the backspace key, deleting whole words doesn't happen until you've deleted a few words first. Use swiping for just deleting the last word or two, but press and hold backspace when you're looking to clear a paragraph or more.

How to find emoji on the BlackBerry KEYone keyboard

Emoji support is absolutely vital to modern messaging. You might not spot access to emoji right away on the BlackBerry KEYone keyboard, but they're there.

  1. Press and hold the "0" key.
  2. Tap the smiley icon that pops up at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Select the emoji you want in your text.

Note that there are tabs along the bottom to jump between subsections of emoji, or you can just swipe left and right to look at other pages of emoji.

The utility bar that pops up also provides handy shortcuts to pasting text that's already copied to the clipboard, and jumping to keyboard settings.

Use the keyboard to scroll

The great thing about the BlackBerry KEYone keyboard is that it comes in handy even when you aren't typing. Swiping up and down on the keyboard is an easy way to scroll through a webpage without having the view obscured by your finger. Swiping left and right can get you between home screens. Basically, whenever you need to scroll or navigate, you can use the BlackBerry KEYone keyboard.

Set up shortcuts

From the home screen, the keyboard can be used to launch directly into a wide range of actions. Though launching apps is a big part of this, the BlackBerry KEYone takes this one step further with shortcuts the go one level deeper. For example, it could be starting an e-mail to a specific person, or adding a new event to the calendar. There's a lot to this shortcut system. It's worth reading up on how to set BlackBerry KEYone keyboard shortcuts.

Double-tap to enter cursor mode

Fine editing of text can be tricky when you're using a finger to move a cursor around. One of the added benefits of having a touch-sensitive keyboard is that it can be used as a kind of trackpad for moving a text cursor around your document. Just double tap the keyboard (without pressing down on the keys) and you'll be able to freely navigate any text field. You can even hold down the Shift key while moving the cursor to select text.

This is helpful for fixing typos, copying text, and other editing. For even greater control, cursor mode also brings up arrow keys at the bottom of the screen which can reposition the cursor one character at a time.

How to factory reset the BlackBerry KEYone

Resetting the BlackBerry KEYone is simple. We'll show you how to do it and how to save your data beforehand.

If you're looking for a fresh start on your BlackBerry KEYone, doing a factory reset is easy. This will clear all of the information on the device's internal storage, including your Google account, downloaded apps, music, photos, and other data.

By default, the installed SD memory card will be left alone, though you can wipe that in the process too, if need be. It's important to make sure all of your data is safe before starting. Read up on our guide on how to back up the BlackBerry KEYone before getting started with the wipe.

How to factory reset the BlackBerry KEYone

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the gear icon to go into Settings.
  2. Scroll down and tap Backup & reset under the Personal subheading.
  3. Tap Factory data reset.
  4. A warning screen will itemize everything that will be wiped. Scroll down to confirm, and tap Erase SD card if required. Generally this is where your music and photos go, so it may be worth leaving this unchecked.
  5. Tap the Reset Phone button when ready. You'll be prompted to enter your PIN number.

The system will then initiate the factory reset and proceed to reboot. Once finished, you'll be taken to the initial set-up screen for registering accounts.

Even the police feel over-charged by Rogers

If you think you're dishing out too much to service provider Rogers, you'd be in the same boat as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Newly discovered documents have revealed that as of August 1, Rogers had imposed a new set of fees on police divisions seeking data about their service subscribers. Though many of these requests were processed for free according to Rogers, some required a "minimal" charge to produce affidavits in court and track location when provided a warrant. The fees for affidavits have since been dropped, but location tracking charges remain.

BlackBerry Classic now available at Carphone Warehouse

Starting today, Brits can pick up the BlackBerry Classic from Carphone warehouse for £26.50 a month and £329.99 SIM free. Vodafone Business, O2, and Clove are also expected to be carrying the Classic soon. The Classic has already gone on sale across the world in Canada, Singapore, UAE, and soon in the U.S. on AT&T and India.

BlackBerry Classic and exclusive Passport confirmed for AT&T

Today at CES AT&T confirmed they'd be carrying the BlackBerry Passport and the BlackBerry Classic for $649.99 and $419.99 off-contract, respectively. You'll be able to snag the Passport for $199.99 and Classic for $49.99 with a two-year commitment, or $0 if you go with installments on Next.

AT&T is getting an exclusive design on the Passport with rounded corners. Why the change? BlackBerry CEO John Chen explained during the CES press conference that "AT&T wanted rounded corners. Some of us are more square. No other reason than that."

AT&T throttling unlimited data subscribers regardless of network congestion

Recent anecdotal evidence of throttling AT&T data speeds on unlimited LTE plans have been confirmed by spokespeople, despite regulatory pressure to eliminate the practice. AT&T users with those subscriptions are still being automatically throttled after they hit 5 GB of usage. This change can be as dramatic as a dip from 23 Mbps to 0.1 Mbps until the end of the billing cycle.

$130-worth of Amazon apps now available for free

Leading up to Black Friday shenanigans, Amazon has kicked off a great promotion on their Appstore, featuring $130-worth of apps for free. Some of the highlights of the collection includes Angry Birds Seasons, Perfectly Clear, Quell Memento, Edge Extended, and Docs to Go Premium.

BlackBerry Classic now available for pre-order

The BlackBerry Classic, complete with the familiar button belt and trackpad, is available right now for pre-order from ShopBlackBerry for $449. It's worth noting that you won't be able to use this one on Sprint, Verizon, or U.S. Cellular. The launch event proper is December 17, so that should give you an idea of a shipping timeframe.

BlackBerry partners with Salesforce for secure customer data management

BlackBerry has teamed up with Salesforce so joint customers can securely access customer data seamlessly through BES12. This is yet another solid announcement out of the BlackBerry Enterprise Summit, and should help them push into the public sector more aggressively.

BlackBerry Enterprise Server 12 now available

Another gem out of the BlackBerry Enterprise Summit today is the global release of BES12. A long line of partners have already shown support for the well-known device management platform are already vouching for it, including Bombardier, American Crane, Home Hardware and Rocco Forte. Carriers worldwide are signing on to sell BES12, including Ingram Micro, Orange France SA, Verizon Wireless, Vodafone, DMI and others.

To push the importance of security in enterprise, BlackBerry went on to release survey data that shows only 35% of respondents are confident that their data is protected from a mobile threat. It's also worth noting that BlackBerry has partnered up with Samsung to deliver BES12 security to the Android side of things. Hit up BlackBerry's BES12 site for more info.
