The best wireless chargers for your new phone

It's been eight years since wireless charging first came to smartphones with the Palm Pre, but it took Apple building it into the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X to make it matter to the mainstream. That's no snarky jab at Apple or its customers; in fact the iPhone's newfound embrace of wireless charging is reason to celebrate for all those who've ever known the joy of cutting the (charging) cord!

That's because wireless charging is about to return to the scene in a big way – and this time, there's no pesky standards war to get in the way of progress. I'm MrMobile and here's everything you need to know if you're treating your smartphones to a wireless charger in 2017.

MrMobile goes hands-on with the BlackBerry KEYone Special Edition

Normally, a new color option and a minor spec bump aren't newsworthy enough for a hands-on video. But the BlackBerry KEYone Special Edition (or, if you want to be all official about things, the "Limited Edition KEYone Mercury Black Device by BlackBerry made by Optiemus Infracom") is noteworthy for more than a new paint job. For one thing, the special-edition KEYone improves on the base model in RAM and internal storage, two areas it was especially lacking. And for another, it's assembled by an entirely different company.

Of course, there's more to the story, so click on through for MrMobile's BlackBerry KEYone Special Edition hands-on ... and be sure to check out all the BlackBerry KEYone Black Edition coverage on CrackBerry for all the fine details I missed!

What's in MrMobile's bag for 2017?

It's been a full year since I last gave you a peek into my pockets for a tour of MrMobile's Everyday Carry. That's equivalent to four years on the planet Mercury, seven years for the common canine – and roughly a century when it comes to mobile technology. In that time I've traded Windows Mobile for BlackBerry; shed the Microsoft Band in favor of some even bigger smartwatches; and upgraded to the new iPad Pro while leaving my MacBook as-is. Oh, and I bought a wallet at a comic book store. Because YOLO, or something.

So whether you're seeking early ideas for Prime Day or just wondering what populates the pockets of a crazy contrarian like me, come check out the gadgetry that gets me where I'm going – in MrMobile's 2017 Everyday Carry!

TYLT Energi Pro review: MrMobile's favorite battery backpack

I knew I needed to review the TYLT Energi Pro when I first saw Daniel Bader rocking one on an overseas trip a few months back – and even though he's beaten me to the official take with his own excellent review, I've gathered some followup thoughts on the backpack in the weeks since. See, the TYLT Energi Pro isn't just any old backpack. It's a bag with a built-in 20,100 mAh battery beefy enough to recharge your tablets, phones, and even some laptops – and with 12+ compartments, it's big enough to hold all of that gadgetry, too. Combine that with water resistance, internal cable routing and enough comfort gel to keep your shoulders padded even with 20 lbs of cargo aboard, and you've got yourself a battery backpack that lives up to its high price tag (even though it's a stretch).

Click on through to MrMobile's TYLT Energi Pro review to see the best battery backpack of 2017 – or if you want to save some coin, check out some of the runner-ups below!

MrMobile is giving away a ton of tech!

One of my favorite things about reviewing the hottest mobile technology is that sometimes they let me give it all away. See, we just hit the 100-video mark over on the MrMobile YouTube channel, and after less than a year we've also managed to snag some 350,000 subscribers! I thought those were milestones worth celebrating, so I wrote some of the biggest and best tech companies in the world and asked them if they'd like to offer some giveaway gadgets to the people who made it all possible (psst: that's you!). To my surprise and delight, most of them agreed ... and now you've got the chance to win everything from smartphones to tablets to mobile accessories to a 4K TV – over $10,000 in prizes!

To enter, the terms are pretty simple: you just have to say something nice on YouTube. Why? Because YouTube comment sections have too long been counted among the very worst parts of the internet, and I thought it would be nice to shine a little light into those dank corners … if only for a week. For the details, check out the announcement video – then head over to the official contest site for more info and additional chances to win. Giveaway recipients will be announced starting May 5th.

Until then, best of luck – and stay mobile my friends!

Push to talk: remember when phones were walkie-talkies?

Gather round kids, and I'll tell you a tale of a time before text messaging was so ubiquitous, a time where a phone call was so easy, it only took one button… and man it could be annoying. Not the tech, the people.

I'm Michael Fisher, AKA MrMobile, and I relived the glory days of flip phones and push-to-talk (so you didn't have to). Join me as I recollect what was great about this feature, what people did to ruin it, and how you too can push a button to awkwardly interrupt your friends and co-workers.

How to stay connected in a storm: a MrMobile guide

APOCALYPSE! Well, maybe it's not that dramatic, but when your power goes out it can feel like one, especially in our connected world. If you haven't prepared, you might not be able to check your Twitter for HOURS. That's too much for some to bear.

I'm Michael Fisher, alias MrMobile, and I spent yesterday in one of New England's dreaded Nor'easters, preparing for the worst (which, in this case, was a cup of hot chocolate and uninterrupted electricity). But if you find yourself in the path of a storm, this video guide will help you get set up for whatever's incoming!

Chronos hands-on: The cure for the common wristwatch

I'm Michael Fisher, and I'm a smartwatch superfan. Sure, they're imperfect, but in my view they're also incredibly underrated; I love being able to glance at my wrist to see why my smartphone just buzzed from the bottom of a bag, or use my watch to ping the same phone when I lose it in the couch cushions.

The thing is: not all smartwatches are stylish, and keeping up with the biennial upgrade cycle isn't everyone's thing. Plus, there are plenty of beautiful timepieces out there already, some of them carrying sentimental value. What if you could imbue one of those with some modern smartwatch features, instead of springing for an entirely new accessory?

That's the question Chronos hopes to answer with its tiny disc of the same name, and it's unlike any wearable I've used before. Join me for a hands-on tour of Chronos: the cure for the common wristwatch.

Review: udoq corrals your gadgets with style — for a price

Take it from a guy with too many phones: finding the right charging station is well worth the effort. Striking the right mix of style and utility in a docking station can be tough — but the folks behind the cheekily-named udoq might just have found it.

It's a machined aluminum shelf that comes in four different sizes and lets you charge smartphones, tablets, or other pocketables... and unlike much of the competition, this docking station lets you use your gadgets while they top up. But is the udoq stylish enough to justify its steep price tag?

Check out MrMobile's udoq 400 review to find out!

You've Got Questions, Michael Fisher's Got Videos (and the fastest growing new tech channel on YouTube!)

Over 30,000 youtube subscribers in less than a week... and MrMobile is just getting started!

It's been a whirlwind ten days in MrMobile's Boston studios, where we've been focused on crafting the biggest YouTube debut party the mobile tech space has ever seen. In less than two weeks, I've published an introduction video, two smartphone reviews, a preview of the hottest electric car ever to hit the road, a look at a "work phone" that's also a pretty sweet vacation device, and a mobile accessory I've wanted since before Bluetooth was invented.

The response thus far has been overwhelmingly positive, and I'd like to thank everyone who helped push the MrMobile YouTube Channel to over 30,000 subscribers basically overnight. Don't despair if you missed the initial launch celebration, though! To help you get up to speed, we've embedded every single MrMobile video in this post. Click around to see what catches your eye, and when you're done catching up, hop on over to the MrMobile Channel page and hit that Subscribe button; we still need your help to hit 50K, 100K, and all the milestones that lay beyond!

Warning: You may get addicted watching these MrMobile videos!
