BlackBerry confirms new round of layoffs in Waterloo and Sunrise

Update - Rather than letting folks wonder about the number of employees laid off, BlackBerry has now stated "approximately 200 employees have been impacted in Canada and Florida."

BlackBerry has now confirmed a new round of layoffs has impacted a small number of employees in Waterloo and Sunrise, Florida. In a statement issued by BlackBerry, the exact number of employees impacted by the layoffs was not given but notes this is the continuation of the company turnaround plan.

BlackBerry Priv's February security patch is now rolling out

Here is the list of what all was patched in this release. In total, there were six CVE's addressed in this update.

The BlackBerry Priv is now receiving its February security patch. At this time, it is not clear exactly what has been patched or changed with this build, though we expect Google to reveal details about the update shortly. BlackBerry has done an excellent job so far in pushing timely security patches to the Priv.


You can now 'thumbs up' individual app reviews in the Google Play app

If you've wanted a way to show someone that their review of a particular app helped you, you'll be happy to see that you can now 'thumbs up' a review from the Google Play app. That's right, if you come across a review that you find worthy of being thanked, or liked, or acknowledged positively in some fashion, you can now do so right from your phone. To find helpful reviews, you can sort them by most helpful first, newest first or have the highest rated show up first. Previously, you were only able to use the button on the web, so it's great to see that make its way to the mobile app.


Verizon spent $70 million to triple Bay Area LTE capacity ahead of the Super Bowl

Verizon wants to make sure that all of its customers who are headed to the Super Bowl have full coverage, so the carrier has more than tripled its 4G LTE network capacity in the Bay Area. The carrier spent $70 million in what it calls a "long-term investment" to boost network performance from San Francisco to Santa Clara. With the additional capacity, Verizon will be able to deliver a more reliable connection, even when the area is overly saturated with users.

These upgrades have been in the works for two years: Verizon has built 16 new area cell sites improving network performance at more than 10 major area venues, three major airports, and several hotels.
