BeejiveIM For BlackBerry Beta 1.1.1 Released!

All you Bold and Curve 8900 BeejiveIM users out there should be happy with this post. The application has been updated to version 1.1.1 and addresses a lot of the bugs that were present in previous builds and also includes message list integration.

New to BeejiveIM? It's a great application that allows you to stay connected to all of your instant messaging buddies simultaneously on AIM, MSN/Windows Live, Yahoo!, MySpace, GoogleTalk, ICQ & Jabber.

Now while this build is for all supported devices, there are no changes to devices with less then 4.6 OS on them.

TalkLock™ (BETA) For BlackBerry Storm!

All you Storm owners out there who have issues with the fact the Storm does not have a proximity sensor for when you are on calls are gonna dig this. CellAvant has launched a new free application that is gonna help you out with this issue.

TalkLock starts a few seconds after a call is connected, and blocks touch screen actions. This prevents screen presses from launching apps or any other function for that matter while on a call. Once you are done with the call, TalkLock releases the screen and returns your device back to normal function and at any given point you decide you may unlock it manually.

TalkLock features:

  • Automatically runs after installation, and on each reboot
  • Automatically activates after phone calls are connected
  • Automatically hides when phone calls are completed
  • Manual unlock with "slide to unlock" function
  • Menu item to re-engage lock after unlock
  • Customizeable backround image (uses /home/user/TalkLock-Background.png if it exists under Device Memory)
* Note: Read The FAQ If Your Device Utilizes A Password *

RIM Offers Preview Of MediaSync For Mac!

It's been something RIM has been promising to bring to consumers forever now although I probably would have started with the launch of a BlackBerry Desktop Manager for Mac users first before I'd have even think about MediaSync. But that's just my opinion :-)

Hot on the heels of their Windows update of MediaSync, RIM is now offering up a "Preview" of the application for all you Mac users out there. Be sure to check it and let us know what ya think in the comments. Was the wait for some Mac tools worth it or should RIM go back to the drawing board? Keep in mind this is a preview and not final product.

    Wikipedia Mobile Version Launched...Err..Discovered!

The massively popular online encyclopedia service Wikipedia actually has a "mobile" version! For the longest time before picking up my Bold I was frequently using a site called WAPedia to feed my need for information. Now many reports have posed this as being a new service, but since its original posting over at MicroPersuasion, it has now been realized that the site has been there since at least August. In any event, it supports 14 languages and has a rather *weird* option called "Spoken Wikipedia" which seems to have not ever been enabled. Makes me hope it is what it sounds like it should be and it does indeed get switched on at some point!

Personally, since having picked up my Bold and browsed to the full Wikipedia site a good many times, I find the Bold's browser actually formats the site quite nicely without any real need to have a "mobile" version. Regardless, this is highly useful for older devices that do not have the new browser rendering engine in them. And oh yeah, in case you were wondering, CrackBerry leads to BlackBerry ;-)

AP Mobile News For BlackBerry Storm!

One of the best applications for your BlackBerry is the Associated Press mobile news app. So with that being said, a quick look through the BlackBerry Storm forums reveals that yes indeed there is a version of this application that available for Storm devices which should be great news for all you new Storm owners out there. (thanks chrisb!)

The application can be downloaded at the AP mobile site. Be sure to grab version 2.5.3 and be sure to have your BlackBerry browser identification set to "BlackBerry" so that the site may read you are using a Storm. For those of you not using a Storm, but wishing to check the app out you can open your browser and head to http://bb.apnews.com. The files are also available for download to utilize the BlackBerry desktop manager.

        Telus Unleashes 4.5 OS for 8330 & 8130 Devices!

Maybe this was caught up in the hysteria of getting the new BlackBerry Storm out the doors of Telus shops around Canada, but as of now you can grab the 4.5 OS update for the BlackBerry 8330 and 8130 from Telus' BlackBerry downloads page. The official release being offered is that of application version 4.5.0.77. Sadly though, the BlackBerry 8830 was left out of the update which seems to be the case across all CDMA carriers as I have yet to see a version of that readily available for download in any official form. Not too sure why we're not seeing updates for the 8830 though, given it is a business focused device.

If you are a Telus customer be sure to grab the update and get crack'n on upgrading that OS. If you are unsure of how exactly to upgrade to the new OS be sure to check out our BlackBerry 101: How to Install or Upgrade to a New RIM BlackBerry Operating System (OS) to get you started off on the right foot.

BlackBerry OS Shows Up On...Windows Mobile!?!

Finally, all the Windows Mobile users over at WMExperts can rejoice!! (I kid, I kid). Anyone remember a little while back when RIM said it was working on a virtualization suite for Windows Mobile which would essentially "create" the BlackBerry OS on WinMob devices? Yes? No? Kinda? A refresher can be found on RIM's site. This suite has never made an appearance though... until now that is!

Seems our good buddy Ronen over at BerryReview recieved some nice pics of the BlackBerry OS running on a HTC Touch Pro (aka AT&T Fuze from the SPE Round Robin). While the details are kinda sketchy at this point it does seem as though we may soon be seeing that suite come to life. Looks like a BIG improvement over BlackBerry Connect which has faded off into the sunset. Sound off in the comments!

In These Tough Economic Times... RIM Still Hiring!!

Times are tough these days for all companies out there, with layoffs coming from just about all the major players in every sector of business. Yet RIM seems to be a shining light amongst the crowd. The Financial Post is reporting that RIM is seeking out 1,250 new employees to be spread across all their locations from Australia to the USA, with the majority of these new employees hired to be slated to work at R&D within RIM 's headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

"For the past three or four years, RIM has done the same thing companies like Nokia [Corp.] are doing now with a fraction of the workforce," said a company insider who declined to be named. "Right now, for every engineer who is promoted, RIM is hiring two or three to replace them. Probably in a few more years RIM could do some restructuring but not now."

RIM is reported to currently employ approx. 10,000 people in many different areas and as a growing organization that has sold approx 5.8 million devices the 3rd quarter of the year, all while postioning themselves as the second largest smartphone manufacturer gaining 15.9% of the market share, it only makes sense that the newly hired individuals would be set to start positions in R&D.

Now, what are the chances a member of the CrackBerry Nation can get a job? Someone get me Jim on the line...Please? lol

Rogers BlackBerry Curve 8900 Smartphone Review!!

          View BlackBerry Curve 8900 Accessories @ ShopCrackBerry.com >>
View BlackBerry Curve 8900 Apps @ CrackBerry App Store >>

          Update: Dec. 8th, 2008, 8:30am EST - Rogers & RIM Officially Announce the 8900 >> *

Finally!! It seems like forever ago that we found about RIM's plans for the next-generation BlackBerry Curve, originally codenamed and referred to by all as the Javelin. The Curve 8900 just recently launched in Germany on T-Mobile, and has now made its way to North America, launching on Rogers in Canada first. RIM is a Canadian-based company, so it's nice to seem this early Christmas present from them!

It definitely felt like Christmas yesterday when I was able to score this beautiful package at a Rogers location in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Thanks Matt!). Earlier in the day when speaking to Rogers Customer Care agents they told me I was not going to be able to pick this device up until January... but to that I say Hah! I never was one to stop and take the first person I spoke to's word for it. Though we have yet to see the Curve 8900 be "officially" announced by Rogers, the reports are beginning to flood in that Rogers dealers are getting it in stock. If your local store doesn't have it just yet, give it a few days - it should be available everywhere soon!

In any event, the device is here and in my hands as I type so let's give it a run through, shall we?!!

          WHERE Launches For BlackBerry Bold!

This right, here is some great news! One of the questions that is frequently asked in the CrackBerry Forums, the Bold forums specifically, is "Is WHERE available for the Bold?"

The answer was always followed by a resounding No! That is... until now. If you head on over to WHERE's website you will now find the option is available to have the application delivered to your BlackBerry Bold. Sweet!

Just in case the video does not explain the application enough, hit the link to the WHERE site for more information.

          Invertex From ThemeBerry!

The good folks over at ThemeBerry have been busy as of late. Invertex is the latest to come from them and in these days of Bolds, Storms and Javelin/Curve 8900's it's refreshing to see theme developers bring a similar experice to older devices as well. Invertex is a nice fluid theme, with custom icons, I personally have had this theme on my device for a while now and liked it so much I actually broke my routine of daily theme changes, that alone is quite impressive ;)

You can grab this theme for pretty much any flavor of device except the Storm in the Shop CrackBerry Store for only $7.

A Look At The Telus Storm!

Sure Verizon and Vodafone have been hard at work unleashing their versions of the Storm in the US and across the pond. But unlike the Bold launch where Canadian carrier Rogers (among many other countries carriers) had the Bold long before it made it's US appearance on AT&T, Canadian CrackBerry addicts are still waiting to actually give this device a whirl. The good folks over at BlackBerryCool have had an up close and personal look at the Telus-branded version of the Storm and came back with this to say about it..

"Well let’s start first with what immediately stood out about the OS. First of all, let me state that the Telus Storm OS is not yet final.Telus has yet to confirm/load which applications will come on the Storm (this should be happening very soon), and I was told that they were still tweaking the OS for performance. I wasn’t told whether the optimization is for use on Telus’ network or the touchscreen interface, but I did notice a slight delay in letters appearing on the screen while I texted. I also had a bit of trouble getting the accelerometer to switch from portrait to landscape mode consistently, but I think this was due to blogger FAIL than anything else."
"Interestingly, the Telus Storm did not feature the BlackBerry Application Center that launched with the Verizon Storm. When I asked about its absence, I was told that Telus was ‘looking into it’ and ‘eager to talk to RIM’. While I wasn’t able to snag a peak at the OS version, the tweaking and the lack of apps or App Center leads me to believe that the Telus Storm will launch with something higher than OS 4.7.0.65."

Now, we know the device will be hitting Telus and Bell..prices and dates are still debateable at this point although BGR recently posted the $299.99 price point on a 3 yr contract from Telus, and lots of online banner ads have been dropping this price point as well. Rumors circulating also indicate a December 8th-15th launch date, but again... it's rumors which indicate that.

          Grayonic Theme Looking Very Sharp!

I have a confession folks... aside from being a CrackBerry addict in general, I'm also a major theme junkie. I just can't help myself. A nice new theme comes out and I just have to have it. I'm positive some of you out there can relate lol! This beautiful piece of work comes to us from Visto Themes. With the user customizable icons right down to the custom message waiting indicator, nice shade of light blue and wicked looking transparency in the menus this theme has made its way into my weekly theme rotation, without question.

Available for the Bold and 83XX/88XX Devices, you can grab this theme for $7 and many more from VistoThemes in the ShopCrackBerry Software Store and in the forums.
