Android Wear is just one of the reasons I want Google Play Services on BlackBerry 10

Today Google announced Android Wear , a new platform geared toward bringing Android to wearable devices like smartwatches. Big companies like LG and Motorola are already on board with new devices, and others are sure to follow in the coming months.

It goes without saying that the Android Wear devices will work flawlessly with most — if not all — Android devices, however it's safe to say that without Google Play Services on BlackBerry 10, we'll be out of luck when it comes to using any of these new devices with BB10 phones.

Verizon rolls out OS 10.2.1 for the BlackBerry Z10, Q10 and Z30

Hey Verizon users — today is your day! BlackBerry OS 10.2.1 is now rolling out for all devices including the BlackBerry Z10, BlackBerry Q10 and tBlackBerry Z30. It's been quite the wait, but also well worth it.

CrackBerry Asks: Do you use the BlackBerry Hub icon?

Last week as I gathered some homescreen shots from the Crack Team, I was surprised to see that a few actually had the BlackBerry Hub icon in use — something I never do. The icon has been around for a while now as another (perhaps easier?) way to access the BlackBerry Hub without having to swipe into it. I've gotten so used to the gesture however that I don't see the need for the icon to take up space on my screen. Others find it comes in handy, and that's okay too.

Speaker Battle: iPhone 5s vs BlackBerry Z30 vs Galaxy Note 3

Our BlackBerry hating friend J_Caloy is back with another video, only this time he isn't hating on BlackBerry — he's putting it up to a test of might against other devices. With three challenges already in the books for alarm clock, picture sharing and multi-tasking (check them out in the gallery above) he's moved onto a battle of speakers to see which device has the best overall sound.

Team Mercedes / BlackBerry gets the win at the Australian Grand Prix

This weekend marked the start of the 2014 Formula 1 season with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Lewis Hamilton sat on the pole with solid chance of taking home the win — only it was his teammate, Nico Rosberg, who would cross the line first.

After just three laps, Hamilton was forced to retire due to a failed cylinder. It was definitely a disappointing start, but there was a still a chance for Rosberg to take control — and that he did. World champion Sebastian Vettel also had to retire early (8 cars in total didn't finish the race) leaving plenty of room for Rosberg to strut his stuff.

BlackBerry Kopi caught on camera once again

It's been a few months now since we've seen the BlackBerry Kopi, but today some more images have surfaced with another look at the unreleased device. We still don't know very much about this one, though it's said to have a removable battery and a faster processor than the BlackBerry Q5. Obviously it's got a physical keyboard as well, so it would join the ranks of the Q5 and Q10 should it ever see the light of day.

No word on when or even if the Kopi will ever be released, so for now just speculate at will as to what will happen with this little guy :)

2014 Formula 1 Preview

The 2014 Formula 1 season kicks off this weekend with the Rolex Australian Grand Prix, marking the return of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rossberg in the BlackBerry-sponsored Mercedes AMG Petronas car. This year looks to be a good one and is packed with plenty of changes that should make it an interesting one as well. Some drivers have moved around and some have moved on. There are a handful of rule changes that will keep everyone on their toes as well.

No matter who you're a fan of, the 2014 F1 season will be as exciting as ever. To make sure that you're prepped and ready to go, we've packed everything into our 2014 F1 Preview here so you stay ahead of the game.

BlackBerry OS 10.2.1 rolling out to T-Mobile users starting today

Next up in line for 10.2.1 is T-Mobile, one that we've been expecting for a few weeks now. According to our good pal Michael Clewley, T-Mobile will begin rolling out OS 10.2.1 today around 2pm ET. That means that if you're on Tmo you should see the update at some point before the day is out — we hope.

How do you use your BlackBerry 10 homescreen?

One of the topics that came up on our last podcast was around icons, folders and homescreen placement. Kevin is firm that we should be able to bottom align icons within folders — and it totally makes sense — but for some, they may like things the way they are. I'll admit that I never thought of having them bottom-aligned until he brought it up, and it's never really bothered me too much.

I do typically tend to stick with the same "format" for my homescreen across all my devices. I suppose that makes it easier for me since no matter what device I'm on, I always know what should be where.

Check out the #TechCIT chat on Twitter this Thursday

What features would your ultimate BlackBerry PlayBook 2 have?

Cruising through the forums today, I came across this post from TheJelen with an interesting BlackBerry PlayBook 2 design. The concept here is a big ol' beast packing plenty of processing power, more than enough RAM, a huge battery and a 10" screen. It would of course be running BlackBerry 10 as well and have plenty of customization options at the ready. There would even be two headphone jacks and four speakers for amazing sound. Overall quite the concept if you ask me.

BlackBerry patents capacitive touch keyboard

A few weeks back we first heard of the Windermere, a QWERTY device with a touch-sensitive (capacitive) keyboard. To go along with it, a filing now shows that BlackBerry has received a patent for another type of keyboard — or for the technical folk — a "temporary keyboard having some individual keys that provide varying levels of capacitive coupling to a touch-sensitive display".

Legacy BlackBerry users reporting outages in Canada, APAC

Update: This issue has been resolved. If you're still having problems, hit up the comments and let us know!

It seems that some legacy device users are having some service issues today across Canada and the Asia Pacific regions. While not affecting those with BlackBerry 10 devices, legacy users are experiencing "delays in sending or receiving messages, registering their device, or using other services such as BlackBerry Messenger or BlackBerry Browser."

Next BBM update will bring photo sharing in multi-person chats, bigger emoticons and the ability to send larger files

The BBM team is on a roll cranking out the updates and today BlackBerry gave word that the next big one will have some long-awaited features as well. While there's no official date for the next update, it is definitely something to look forward to. It will bring along the ability to share photos in multi-person chats, larger emoticons and most importantly, the ability to share files up to 16MB within BBM.

Press Release: Odebrecht Purchasing 3500 BlackBerry 10 Smartphones for Operations in Brazil

The Brazilian company Odebrecht has just announced that they wil be purchasing 3,500 BlackBerry 10 devices to deploy in their organization along with BES10. Odebrecht will be purchasing a mix of Z10 and Q5 models during the first year of their contract. Odebrecht CIO Andre Schneiter cites the security features of both BlackBerry 10 and BES10 and one of the biggest deciding factors, and also BlackBerry Balance so that executives don't need to carry both work and personal devices.
