Our forums are a fantastic place to discover new and interesting games. Take for instance this extraterrestrial twist on the classic match three style puzzle game. Alien Hive made a name for itself on other platforms and it has brought the same nerve-wracking fun to BlackBerry 10.
When you think of matching games, Candy Crush and Bejeweled come to mind. With these types of games currently available, they had to come up with a way to stand out from the rest to keep the players coming back for more. In this case, players must help an alien species evolve by swiping tiles across a six by six board and matching all aspects of their existence. One moment you’re matching three of kind of alien eggs, then hatching and matching the infants, and the progression continues until you reach the supreme level to create the greatest hive there is with the twenty four high level creatures shown in the settings menu. Players should match other items as well to earn energy and bonuses (i.e. plants), or to remove obstacles such as naughty bots.
As mentioned earlier what sets this apart from the many matching games in the store is the sliding tiles. Like the number slide puzzles played as a child, there is one space free for users to slide rows horizontally and vertically to create matches. It’s a clever idea and increases the level of difficulty. Pieces still have the option of being moved one at a time, but keep in mind that each move you make reduces your energy level (represented by crystals) as there is a limit on how many you can make.
Players can earn power-ups, such as the wormhole that lets you drag a line across the board three times, magic fruit to instantly evolve an object, or blasters to destroy objects blocking moves. Currency is earned simply by playing to purchase additional power-ups or can be bought within the application.
There are two modes available in this version: the one discussed above with restricted moves and blitz mode where you must complete as many matches as possible within a set time limit.
Alien Hive is a classic time-waster and performs well with terrific graphics and music. It's entertaining, challenging, and keeps you occupied. The only thing I notice at times is how long it takes to make any progress. However, it's meant to be this way and players should plan their moves in advance in order to make any headway. You certainly can't go wrong with giving it a try as it is FREE to download for the BlackBerry Z10 and Z30.
