Kevin,
You need to get yourself some real grippers! Get some Captains of Crush. Start off with a trainer, rated at 100lbs, then move on to #1 at 140lbs. They go all the way up to #3 or #4 i believe...once you crush those, your handshakes will mean business.
As for exercising, key for me is to keep them short but intense. 2-3 workouts a week, no more than 30-40 minutes. Rest days, go for walks, play a sport you like...play!
That is all you need.
But if your diet sucks, no chance of succeeding. I lost 70 lbs over the course of 18 months, the first 40 melted off without effort because of dietary changes. The next 30 were a little more difficult and had to increase my exercise intensity.
That is when i discovered kettlebells. I have been working out with them and my own bodyweight since then...going on 3 years now. I am in better shape now at 39 than i was at 20 when i was hitting the gym 5 days a week doing split workouts and wasting time doing curls and triceps pushdowns.
Full body, compound movements are where its at. And remember, you cannot outexercise a donut!
