CrackBerry Asks: Would you want a Dot View case for your BlackBerry?

By Adam Zeis on 27 Mar 2014 04:56 pm EDT

Yesterday we saw all kinds of HTC One (M8) news floating around the web. Even though we're all BlackBerry lovers at heart, it's okay to sneak a look at the latest and greatest in the Android world. While I can't say that I'll be running out to pick one up anytime soon, I am a bit jealous of one thing — that Dot View case.

The case itself is essentially just a standard folio with a bunch of holes in it, but it's the dark magic that makes it awesome.

With the case on and closed, the screen shows different information — be it the time & weather, incoming calls, changing volume — but it appears in a sort of 8-bit fashion through the actual case.

In case you haven't seen it, here's what it looks like:

I'm actually kind jealous on this one, even though I'm not a big case fan. I think this would look awesome on my BlackBerry Z30.

So we're curious to know how many of you would be down for one of these as well. Hit up the poll below with a yay or nay, then drop a comment and let us know what you think! And if by whatever reason you have an HTC One (M8) and need a dot case, look for it here soon.

CrackBerry Asks: Would you want a Dot View case for your BlackBerry?

I don't see how dot view would make it a toy... It adds functionality to your tool in a fun way!

Posted via the Android CrackBerry App!

Adds functionality until you get dust in the holes. That would drive me nuts. Plus, the video makes it seem like typing is a pain in the arse when the case is on the phone. For now, I'm OK with the peek ability on BB10.

Yeah I see the dust being a problem. Oh well, its still a nifty little thing!

Blackberry are not toys, they are Tools!

If you want a toy go pick up an iphone 4 w/ a GameBoy Color Case on it.

Posted by Phobe's Owner on the BlackBerry Q10

That statement is pretty irrelevant anymore..

BlackBerry has Angry Birds now. And iOS and Android have BBM & BES service now.

You can knock on their cases all day, in the end that's one less option to you whether you like it or not.

Nah, it would just sit on my desk like all the other cases I swore I'd use and never did. Go naked!

True! It does look cool though. I have never had a case on any of my BlackBerry's, so I can't see that changing now.

Tapped and flicked from my BlackBerry Z30!

For me, I the only use for a case is to cover the bumps and bruises from going naked. Otherwise like plastic on a new couch. If your into plastic the old couch worked fine. Mho

I only wear BlackBerry hard case when I'm on freeride on my Rollerblades! Before I bought case my Q10 slipped from my pocket in longslave during jump over some barriers. It ended just with few small scratches which I don't see usually :D Naked Q10 is the sexiest phone!

Posted via CB10

It's looks cheap, this plastic Android version. Meh.

For BlackBerry, it must look "a bit more" premium than that. Then I might consider.

How about BB10 GLASS WEAVE, and higher res?

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

I'd be embarrassed to pull this out in a conference room.

I'm Zeeing a bright future for Blackberry

I like the idea of the glass weave with higher res display.
Other than that I already know the time and temp before I head out the door so it's kind of pointless to me.

Posted via CB10

My answer is no. Android phones are going cheap day by day. The OS version name itself sounds so cheap. We want manly phone, not toys like phone.

Posted via BlackBerry Z10

Love it! Though not sure how much I'd be willing to spend on a case. Built-in would be awesome! xD Would save on battery just to display pertinent information.

Posted via CB10

One could very easily use a 3D printer to produce such a case for BB10 handsets, and the code to make it work would be pretty simple. Sometimes the simple stuff is the coolest :)

Posted via CB10

It looks nice but considering battery consumption and how it will always be a issue, as these phones and apps become more powerful & plentiful I will pass

Only if I have the ability to clip it to a belt. I do not like putting touch screen devices in my pocket.

The Most Interesting Device In The World, BBZ30! Keep Moving My Friends!

Pointless gadget for lil boys...cant imagine pulling my z10 on some meeting with such case on!

Posted via CB10

Neat concept but not something I would want to use. But if it's on all the time, battery life can be a concern.

Posted via CB10

Swipe up to answer a call.....Swipe down to hang up????

Hmmmmmm.........I wonder where I saw that before? Oh that's right! IT WAS ON MY Q10!

Swipe Swipe Swipe....all swipe gestures!!

I don't think I would ever buy this product, because I liked it better the first time when it was called BlackBerry 10!

So does BlackBerry need to file a lawsuit against these guys too?

The best part of all this is, all the disingenuous tech writers that said BlackBerry 10 sucked, are gonna call shit like this innovative and game changing!

Some on these comments are just dripping with resentment.
Hardly a toy!

I think it's a neat idea, and something different. That's what innovation is all about! It's awesome to see these new ideas and concepts.

However, because of the battery life issue with the Z10, I hardly think it would be appropriate. Perhaps it's something that could be tailored to the Z30. That being said, BlackBerry should be (and I'm sure they are) concerned with far more important things.

Posted via CB10

When I saw this I thought it was a cool idea. I would very much want this for my Z30. It would be perfect but I've used a flip shell case for my Z30 and it doesn't last me more than two weeks before it gets taken off, purely due to the awkwardness of using it so would have to wonder if a case like this would last me too. Love the idea though.

Posted via CB10

Yes, but a dotview case would also mean changes to the lock screen and how notifications, information updates are handled. Those sort of changes/ updates are completely welcome though

Posted via CB10

My children would like it, for me it's a no. But of course they are android users.

Posted via CB10

It's kind of gimmicky, and looks very Androidish to me, those dots instantly reminded me of those on the HTC (for which it is made, duh!) and go, no.

Some higher res maybe? BB10 premium GLASS WEAVE, not cheap plastic?

Just like smart watches, there certainly is a use case for some users, but probably not the majority (yet).

"No Q10?" -> "Buy from Chen... "

I'm always opening my flop case to see time etc
So a case like that would eliminate that.... would be a nice touch

Attention getting accessory, that's for sure. Would have to try it out before I could decide whether I like it or not though.

It's a novelty that will wear off. My main concern is cleaning and maintenance. It's bad enough we often smudge the screen saver that need to be replace every so often. Those tiny holes definitely look challenging.

I'd rather take battery savings and not have to clean out the holes with a needle.

I'm gonna say f.. the accesories, f.. the the stupif software.. BlackBerry its a competition age, time change, so stop playing and asking us abiut the shit,, acc. And stupid little thing, and go actualy work and focus on damn new super devices with better specs and hardware, all companies are working seriously on devices while BlackBerry fans are just talking about a shit sw leaks. And some damn accesories, its real time no more playing.

Posted via CB10

This completely useless makes daydream look even more like a blatant ripped off of now sleeping screen / glance

I would love to see a similar implementation in bb10 amoled screens however

Posted via CB10

It's quite an interesting concept, but...

In order to get the dot displayed thru, does it also means that the display is also always ON. If so I care more of my battery life then to get that feature.

If not, then what action should be done to get the information display. Is it almost similar action then to simply lift that cover to reveal full home information?

Posted via CB10

I love my Q10. I love the look and feel. The carbon fiber weave on the back is awesome and perfectly grippy. I go naked and when I get the Z30, I will do the same thing.

I would not use the dot case.

Via CB10 & Z10 or Q10

Another way to tell what time it is and if it's raining. Thanks but no thanks. I have a wrist watch and can look outside

Posted via CB10

Agree. Somehow looking outside is way more accurate than current weather on accuweather.

Posted via CB10

Cool, yes, but I wonder if you need to set up brightness screen to see it better.

" Initiated from my Q10 "

Hey. I don't like all this copycating
What they get I want to get. And stuff,
Damnn Mannnnn, I am blackberry,
Your giving other phones and. Platforms too much DAMN credit

Posted via CB10

I love how they've got swiping up / down to answer and reject calls.

Posted via the Android CrackBerry App!

Please convey the message to the manufacturers we need it for z30...z10 already has lot of options in the market.

Posted via CB10

It's kinda cool, if it interacted with the phone and the hub it might be useful. Does it mean I have to have a app running in the background for it to work? Either way I can't see myself shelling out almost $60 for one.

The new features with 10.3 using the prox sensor looks more promising than this, and it's free.

Bring it on! Keeps my bb safe and gives me extra functionality with the case on! I'd buy it!

Posted via BB10 OS

Dumbest looking thing I've seen in years... reminds me of the Lite-Brite I had as a kid.

Posted via CB10

Not a fan of flipping cases.

BTW, have anybody noticed the swipe up/down gesture of managing a phone calls? BlackBerry drops it, now it's HTC.

Posted via Q10 running

I imagine the feature being activated unintentionally all the time, in one's pocket, and wasting the battery. I love my BlackBerry Flip Case for my Z30. And the flip case that I had for my Z10 that I gave to my son to replace his iPhone. (He was very grateful. )

Posted via CB10

So now instead of viewing your phone from the front, you turn the phone around and view? How intuitive...

From zee coolest flicking smartphone ever

So just watched the video. First thing I noticed.... they implemented BlackBerry swipe up/down to answer/reject calls.

Secondly I noticed all the swiping to control the phone. Stealing BlackBerry ideas one at a time.

Posted via CB10

Seen a review of this case yesterday and even though it is innovative I wouldn't use the feature. Most of the things I do is within the OS and not on the surface as this case is. Sure you can send voice to text but really the blinking red light is all I need when I need to respond and act on it.

Posted via CB10

If there's a market demand, then bring it forward.

Of all the ideas I haven't cared for I'm still impressed by the innovation posters have presented on the CrackBerry site.

No one can accuse BlackBerry of standing still.

Sent from my BlackBerry Z30

Dust might be a problem. I get dust in between the z10 transform case.

I like the concept but I'm not fussed if we don't get a copy cat

Why can't we get a water proof case for BlackBerry phones yet? That shouldn't be hard to make.

Posted via CB10 on my Z10

all this wonderful technology on the phone and the one thing that stands out is the case?WTF? I think it is starting go get to that point maybe its the extra charger or the external battery pack thrown in. The cool stuff now is not really even the phone its the little things. maybe some small software that is unique. Basically all the phones are the same and offer pretty much he same features. Sure some havea better camera or a fingerprint scanner(waste of time in my opinion) but other then that they are the same so we bring up this fabulous new phone and the thing we think is really cool is the case? I think this kind of says it all. Its diferent it offers something that no one else does this is really what people are looking for. So if thats the case blackberry has to add some small things in that are unique. I think thats the key to success. The case is okay but to me its nothing that special. Dfferent yes. special not really.

I like to put cases on my Z10 to add some color and protect it from bumps.. would love to have something like a dot view case on my phone.. looks cool!

Posted via CB10

Not really, thanks. Just a plastic fantastic gimmick.
What i would really want is that 8-bit look and feel on OLED BB10 devices. As we had on Nokia Sleeping Screen. Now, that is cool and easy to code.

Posted via CB10

I like the idea more importantly my son and his mates would think it cool, especially with an app so you could control it...... if it helps sale....

Posted via CB10

It's just a gimmick to sell the phone, something others can see you with. Real phones don't need gimmicks. Go BlackBerry!!

Posted via CB10

Has anyone designed the perfect case for z30? Protect yet easy to type. Where are good engineers that can package a phone like this in a way that can be customised in ways specific to particular uses? Best experience is naked, but that can be the worst for protection and portability?

Posted via CB10

This was the ultimate test to bring out the 'bah humbuggers' that claim anything cool, or new is useless. I was waiting for the 'tools, not toys' quote to be thrown around... didn't have to wait long. It's a CASE, yes, I wouldn't mind having this as a case. It's cool, its new, but also has a retro-like nostalgia to it. I think the case is dope. If I could rig it to work on my Z10- I'd do it without hesitation.

We would get the case but the app would take like 17 years to come to BB Platform and likely show up on BB OS 7 first. :)

You know I am right!!!

I like this idea, and I would probably use it. But, this doesn't seem hard to accomplish. I would in no way pay for a new phone with a 2 Year Contract, just for a cool case. I wouldn't be surprised if we start to see these on amazon for the BlackBerry, and cheap. And then a $0.99 app and you're set. You just saved 2 extra years on AT&T.

Posted via CB10

Actually I want some thing else... I want to buy from blackberry world by using my mobile that possible ????!

Posted via CB10

I think that they should bring this out for all blackberry 10 devices, but the only problem like everyone else has said is if you do get dust in the holes, but I suppose if they include a cloth when you buy it, you could always wipe it.

Posted via CB10

No thanks, that looks like my first ever phone, and I'm not big into recessive technology. Besides, the "lock" screen on my z10 shows much of the same information, and I have an otterbox, so it's protected when I'm looking at it anyways.
