WordPress for BlackBerry 10 and PlayBook updated with new UI

By Bla1ze on 24 Apr 2013 09:02 pm EDT

A nice update for those you out there making use of WordPress as your blogging platform of choice. The latest release of WordPress for BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry PlayBook has now landed and while it remains and Android port, it adds plenty of welcomed changes to the mix including an updated UI. Realistically, it's the same update the Android version received not all that long ago minus some Holo love and well, that's not a bad thing as it shows WordPress is maintaining releases across the board.

  • Action bar updated for easy action to common actions.
  • Use the menu drawer to quickly navigate to other areas of the app. Just tap the arrow in the action bar or swipe to reveal the menu.
  • Use the 'view site' feature to view and share content on your site.
  • users can view the web dashboard (wp-admin).
  • The reader now takes advantage of caching for faster loading.
I really do love the fact that WordPress is continuing to support BlackBerry but for the life of me, I can't understand why they don't just build a native app. It would be such an improved experience if they just went all in. In any case, the update is live in BlackBerry World right now and can be picked up by clicking the link below.

I mostly agree with you about preferring a BB10 native version, but (1) performance isn't that big a factor with this app, (2) Automattic was already and may still be sponsoring an open source java based app for legacy BlackBerry devices and it's a lot to ask them to develop for two BlackBerry platforms, and (3) its hard to imagine a new app, built from scratch, that is as feature mature and bug free as the Android app, which must have significant resources available to it. The legacy WP for BlackBerry lead developer may be better suited to working in Android's java SDK than the BB10 QML/C++ NDK; there's no learning C++ in your spare time... at least not for most people. BlackBerry had to know this was going to happen in many cases when they switched to the new platform. The long run play is to improve the NDK -- maybe even introduce program logic in compiled javascript as an alternative to those who are justifiably intimidated by C++ -- but, the short run play is to improve the Android runtime with HD acceleration if not complete support for Android 4.2.. or 5.0, if when announced, it has some killer API that looks like it could be implemented more quickly than market penetration would typically suggest. This Android app with a fast runtime may be better on BB10 than the native iOS app; the UX is certainly cooler.

Is it just me or do some of these Android Side Loads have funny effects on the Z10?

Anybody knows whether this version will work on the Q10 or not? A decent, working Wordpress app is rather important for me.

I don't see any specific references to Q10 support in the latest update, but the interface has been changed dramatically. There are still a few quirks though. I continually get errors when attempting to moderate comments via the App on my Z10.

I use wordpress from my bb7 bold 9900 quite a bit to check on statistics and comments. Can't wait to get to the Q10 once I can grab it, then I'll be wordpressing with extra speeeed. :D
