Feb 21, 2014 Here’s one way BlackBerry could become a huge consumer brand again

At the start of this millennium BlackBerry did something amazing. They mobilized email. At the time it was rare to see a holstered RIM 850 or RIM 950 handheld …because the people who owned them were addicts. They were always sending and reading email on their devices. Ultimately this addictive nature of the product is what inspired Kevin to start CrackBerry in the first place.  That was a long time ago.

But we all know what happened after the iPhone and Android hit the market. BlackBerry started losing customers. Die hard messaging fanatics still prefer BlackBerry, but too many people have decided that they prefer a huge app store. And until recently, BlackBerry was isolated to BlackBerry hardware.  But not anymore. Now that BBM has gone cross platform, a whole new crowd of users has been exposed to the brand again.

Cross platform BBM has been a nice starting point, but it’s not enough. With Facebook buying WhatsApp and adding 1 million new chat users per day, BBM as a consumer tool has already lost the war. BlackBerry needs to disrupt the market with another cool solution, not try to fight a way bigger giant.

I can think of one way to do this. It’s about bringing voice to every email user in the world. This would go way beyond the 80 million BBM users.

If you're a WhatsApp user, you may be interested in knowing that Facebook has now entered into agreements to purchase WhatsApp for a reported $16 billion. According to documents filed with SEC, the financial details will break down like this, $4 billion in cash and approximately $12 billion worth of Facebook shares. The agreement also provides for an additional $3 billion in restricted stock units to be granted to WhatsApp’s founders and employees that will vest over four years subsequent to closing.

I am a little biased when it comes to instant messaging apps, as I'm sure most BlackBerry users are too. With almost everyone I used to chat to on Whatsapp now on BBM, I hardly use it anymore. But for those still using Whatsapp, it has received a nice little update. It has been given a little color makeover and you'll also find some nice chat bubble changes in there too.

A post popped up yesterday from Thijs Alkemade, a computer science and mathematics student at Utrecht University in The Netherlands. The post outlines a bit of the core encryption methods of WhatsApp, highlighting a few of the technical aspects of the service and also noting some big vulnerabilities.

If you can follow along with the original post, you can see that Thijs runs through two "mistakes" that WhatsApp uses in its methods, both of which are able to be exploited if someone has the know-how. Ultimately he determines that your WhatsApp messages can be decrypted given enough effort by a would-be snoop.

Sep 25, 2013 Game on: Google search trends shows BBM has a real shot at scoring in the multi-platform Instant Messaging game

Long time readers of CrackBerry know I'm a big fan of analytics and have often looked to Google Trends to gain insight into the demand for things like phones and apps. For the most part, looking at Google Trends data over the years has provided a pretty good representation of actual demand over time in the mobile realm, especially when comparing multiple items in a similar category.

With BBM's almost-launch this weekend, I was waiting for Google Trends date to come in so we could get a first impression of how it stands to fare against other multi-platform competitors in the mobile instant messaging space, including the likes of WhatsApp, Viber, WeChat and Snapchat. We know BBM has a large existing install base on BlackBerry Smartphones to the tune of 60 million active users, and we know this past weekend it drove over 1 million downloads on iOS/Android before the launch was halted. The almost-launch also caused a nice big spike on Google Trends.

For many, WhatsApp has become the standard way to chat with friends. Sure, there are more pervasive networks like Facebook and Google Talk, err, Hangouts, but WhatsApp has in no uncertain terms filled the gap of a cross-platform BBM over the last couple of years. Now that that BlackBerry Messenger is finally launching on iOS and Android, will WhatsApp automatically become defunct, or do they have too much of a head start at this point for BBM to catch up? We’re going to put BBM and WhatsApp head-to-head to figure out which comes out on top.

Aug 07, 2013 Now there is no excuse. BBM must include push to talk

Last night we got wind that the cross platform mobile instant messaging leader, WhatsApp, has been rolling push to talk (PTT) into the application. Bla1ze already gave you a quick rundown on this news.

The comments have been pretty harsh, which isn’t surprising considering this is an enthusiast site, and you all know BBM is going cross platform soon. We all get that WhatsApp, while it is an app on our beloved platform, is also a competitor. Many of you took to the comments to blast WhatsApp for creating “a shortcut for voice notes”, an old feature.

If you’ve ever used a Walkie Talkie before, or a Nextel PTT phone, then you understand the power of simplicity. Push a button, hold the button, and talk. That’s it. There isn’t even a “send” button to worry about.

My first experience with a PTT app was Voxer. I found the tool to be so amazing that it prompted me to write about why I think BBM should introduce push to talk. Some of you argued that voice notes was good enough. Seriously, this is the problematic attitude that I sometimes see within BlackBerry itself. I often criticize them for accepting mediocrity. If we send the message that voice notes is an acceptable substitute to PTT, we train the company to keep settling for less than the best. That is no way to reclaim a throne.

Aug 06, 2013 As BBM prepares to go cross-platform, WhatsApp rolls out voice-messaging

While BlackBerry is making some headlines with the news of BBM coming to Android and iOS, the other players in the instant messaging market aren't slowing down their pace either. In fact, one could get away with saying they're ramping up their efforts in a seemingly appropriately timed manner.

Such is the case with WhatsApp, who has now started to roll out voice-messaging on iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Windows Phone. According to our friends over at WPCentral, the addition of voice messaging doesn't require an app update as it all appears to be done server side but for now, the options are showing on a small number of devices.

Aug 01, 2013 The dirty BIG secret of WhatsApp... the second check mark does NOT mean your message has been read!

As BlackBerry gets set to take its native BBM instant messaging service cross-platform to Android and iOS, there's no doubt the incumbent it wants to crush is WhatsApp. Over the last couple of years WhatsApp has grown to have a huge base of users across platforms and around the world. Jump into any phone app store, and WhatsApp will always be near the top of the list.

WhatsApp has been successful because it gained critical mass in filling a void that BBM could have and arguably should have done years ago. Anybody who's used BBM and watched the rise of WhatsApp knows WhatsApp essentially ripped off BBM in form and function, and has been playing catch up to BBM on a feature by feature basis. Most people I know don't love WhatsApp - they simply tolerate it, as it gets the job done well enough for the most part. The thing is, it really doesn't.

Jul 18, 2013 Will the masses abandon WhatsApp when BBM goes cross platform?

Yesterday we saw that the very popular cross-platform mobile IM app WhatsApp updated its pricing model for the iPhone. What was once a $0.99 download is now a free download. But it’s only free for the first year, after which the subscription to keep using it costs $0.99 per year.

Is this a good change for WhatsApp? And what does it mean for BlackBerry’s potential to gain customers on cross-platform BBM this summer?  Seems like something worth talking about.

If we look at this pricing move in isolation, I think it would normally be a good thing for WhatsApp. Making the download free rather than charging money is bound to get you more downloads. And paying $0.99 one time versus paying that same amount every year is still peanuts. It’s as close to free as possible without actually being free.
