Press Release

WhatsApp Messenger Launches on BlackBerry 10

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA and WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - March 13, 2013) - WhatsApp Inc., the company behind WhatsApp Messenger, and BlackBerry (NASDAQ: BBRY)(TSX: BB) today announced that WhatsApp will bring a native version of its popular mobile messaging service to the BlackBerry® 10 platform.

BlackBerry 10 provides an ideal platform for social apps such as WhatsApp Messenger to fully leverage innovative new features like BlackBerry Flow, where apps work together, sharing information with each other to quickly lead the customer intuitively to the information they need and to give them the ability to immediately take action.

"BlackBerry has always been about bringing people together in a way that is fast, reliable and impactful," said Martyn Mallick, Vice President of Global Alliances and Business Development at BlackBerry. "WhatsApp is a leading mobile messaging app that connects people to their contacts on several platforms, and we are pleased to work with WhatsApp to bring their service to our customers."

"BlackBerry has been a great platform for WhatsApp for many years," said Brian Acton, co-founder of WhatsApp. "Delivering WhatsApp on BlackBerry 10 devices is in line with our goals of ensuring that our customers around the world can continue to communicate with the most important people in their lives."

In building a native application for the BlackBerry 10 platform, WhatsApp has been able to provide a fantastic user experience that leverages the true multi-tasking capabilities of BlackBerry 10. WhatsApp Messenger for BlackBerry 10 provides a high quality messaging experience that utilizes real-time push notifications to alert you when you receive messages - even when the screen is locked.

Fully integrated into BlackBerry Contacts, when the customer launches the app for the first time, WhatsApp can automatically scan existing phone numbers in the contact directory and extract the ones using WhatsApp, to help customers build out their contacts list and get started right away.

WhatsApp for BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry 4.6 and higher is available in BlackBerry World (www.blackberryworld.com).

The app is rolling out over the next few hours, so if you don't see it available for your device just yet - check back in a bit.

Yea I'm with telus, you have to search for whatsapp in app world...dont use the link from crackberry

Posted via CB10

"Not available for this device". I suppose I have EE to thank for that if it's requiring the latest os.

Posted via CB10

is there anyone who recognized there may be a new received message notification problem after installing app .. but it can be solved if u reboot your z10

Yes..looks likely.......got a few users in Malaysia on the old OS 10.9.xx and they do not have access to it WhatsApp - states that its not available for the device.

However users on OS10.10.xx do have access to it. I managed to update my OS via a 'Hybrid' method. Please refer to post 1050 in this forum: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2647974/+1040

I don't have the time to type it here again. Hope CB moderators don't mind!

The most possitive thing about this is that this just the beginning... once the few most popular apps do their way to Z10, the rest will be coming as well...

Here it's also working now...not many emoticons, but they will them update for sure...

Posted via CB10

Prove it. Unless you mean that the new messages show up in the "notifications" tab I don't believe you. Show us a picture of Whatsapp in the hub.

Finally got verification but...

None of my contacts appear in the WhatsApp list??

Posted via CB10

i'm happy with just getting the update on my os right now... but reading the comments i can't wait for the restart to get my groove on with whatsapp. so excited to carry only one phone again!!!

Won't install, it downloads but when trying to install it gives a error! What does it mean? How could I fix it? Is it cuz I have OpenWhatsApp installed? Anybody else with this problem?

Posted via CB10

Even with the link it says not available for this device nd has pics of a bbos version. Wtf???

Posted via CB10

Same here, can not open Chat from the hub notifications.
Can also not compose a message from the hub, not supported? Also not many emoticons...
But I'm happy that's here native...and I'm sure some Updates will come soon...

Posted via CB10

Can respond to existing conversations through the notifications in the HUB, Im guessing that without full HUB integration it will not work like the existing HUB tabs.

@bbuserz10 i have 10.0.10.32 OS. as per twitter news they tweeted it will take couple of hours to arrive on bb world :( cant wait

I'm on 10.0.10.32 too and i think whatsapp won't work unless our carriers at least push out 10.0.10.90.. does anyone know if it can be done via BlackBerry Link?

Posted via CB10

For installation errors, go to app world > whatsapp. Click the circled-cross symbol next to the refresh symbol besides the name. Click download again. Worked for me this way.

Posted via CB10

Downloaded! Thank you, WhatsApp despite saying you didn't intend to. I'm letting all my WhatsApp friends know that I've it on Z10!!

Posted via CB10

I've just downloaded it, can't send photos and doesn't have all contacts that have whatsapp but it's a start!

Posted via CB10

I expected WhatsApp to be better than OpenWhatsapp, but it's not much better. It still requires app to be open to receive messages. That kind off kills it's purpose, doesn't it?

Posted via CB10

Go directly to app world to download as link will say unavailable for device. I'm in UK and I'm up and running. Yayy me

Posted via CB10

Finally the long awaited WhatsApp! Although nothing is as good as BBM but lots of my friends are non BlackBerry users so best of both worlds. Now time for all the other good apps like Skype, true caller, viber...

Posted via CB10

I'm on UK EE and I have it installed and working fine.

Search WhatsApp in app world and install. Reboot phone then activate.

Funny thing is, now that I have it installed, if I go back to app world it says it is unavailable for thus device? Weird!

Posted via CB10

Guys I hit the link but it is showing not available for my Z10 unlocked one in Kuwait...do u know why???

@brshrinet

I had the exact same problem. All my contacts were there, then i restarted and they all disappeared. I also want to know if people are getting a whatsapp icon in the hub or is it just a notification? Even Google Chat is in the hub with its own icon, I can't see why whatsapp wouldn't be the same.

Ok so here's my prob. Installed and keyed in my num. It deactivated in on my android but I can't seem to get a single contact. Reinstalled and restarted phone. Same thing. My contact list is empty after several refreshes...losing my patience now.

Good app, seems to be quite streamlined. Much faster and smoother than older version for BlackBerry. Doesn't appear to be battery hungry. So far very happy.

I do have a few names in my phone book that have popped up as numbers only in whatsapp and appear only at the top of my list ... any suggestions?

Posted via CB10

@Hassan: scroll from the top to reveal setting menu and then in profile you can change the pic :)

Posted via CB10

It's not showing up in appworld app but is showing up on appworld.com but when I try to download it I get server error. In UK on orange without the latest software update any ideas?

Posted via CB10

Been waiting ages but still unavailable.. what's a few more hours ey.

Reporting live from the UK lol

Posted via CB10

Yeah don't think it's currently available on the UK App store. Hopefully it will be come morning

Posted via CB10

Here are my experiences:

-Installed the app, looked like it got all my contacts.

- when I restarted the phone, the existing chats all turned to telephone numbers and only a select few contacts showed up in my contact list.

- tried to restart again, showed me even less contacts.

- some chats were showing up as notifications and others weren't.

- not a big fan of whatsapp showing up as a notification rather than its own icon and setting that can be turned on/off on its own like Facebook or LinkedIn.

Overall its a decent start but needs a lot of improvements.

Posted via CB10

All my contacts initially appeared, but I restarted and all contacts and fav disappeared. Doesn't seem to stable yet to me.

Does anyone have his notifications disappear from the hub? If so, does anyone know how to get it back?

Posted via CB10

sharing phtoos & media and even LOCATION are good over here. reboot your phone, it should work.

for those who are experiencing verification issue, try these steps:
1. close the app
2. go to settings --> privacy & security --> permissions
3. allow whatsapp to access ALL permissions
4. relaunch whatsapp, it should work by now
5. alternatively, reboot the phone and it should work

seems the verification is still quite tricky, well.. bear in mind this is the 1st app build..

for notifications, as long as it does the PUSH i don't really care.

Yes you can......in an open conversation tap the three dots in the bottom right corner and choose "send picture"

I can't download it!!? It's says unavailable for your device(STL100-2) . My other bb (STL100-1) went ok, any idea why plz help

Posted via CB10

What version is your OS? I get the same error, just trying to figure out what is causing it

Posted via CB10

Wasn't WhatsApp supposed to be free forever for BlackBerry users? It says I only have 2 months before I have to pay the annual $1

Derek from my Z10!

@2002 Same here! Me and my friends device gives the installation error! I am going nuts already, trying almost 2 hours or even more but so far no luck

Posted via CB10

What version is your OS? I get the same error, just trying to figure out what is causing it

Posted via CB10

US unlocked with TMobile. Works fine so thankful bit I wish it notifies for new messages even when app is closed. Android version does it.

Posted via CB10

Installed it and am in love with it! Thanks for the native version! Contacts integrated perfectly fine. Simply awesome!

Posted via CB10

Only Skype left and I'm 100% sold on getting a Z10....

Ok I'll admit, I was 99.98% sold before... only WhatsApp and Skype to hold me back... and my wallet... -.-

Anyone have experience with a Skype side-load from Android?

Same issue here. Installation fails even after numerous restart of BlackBerry World, device reboots etc. Has anyone got it running on the STL100-1? Any ideas how to get it running?

Posted via CB10

What version is your OS? I get the same error, just trying to figure out what is causing it

Posted via CB10

Just press and hold down the volume up and volume down keys at the same time until you hear a click sound, then go to your picture area and find your screenshot

Posted via CB10

a bit primitive but great to have it on the Z10. whatsapp is known for constant improvements and updates!

I don't see the BlackBerry 10 version. Still shows the old version. Used the link that was given.

Posted via CB10

I'm in the UK on the o2 network and I've had Whatsapp a few hours now but I'm guessing things will be more stable in the next few days ;)

Posted via CB10

This is very frustrating :( getting the installation error over and over. Everyone with the same issue should contact WhatsApp Support on bb10-support@whatsapp.com to let them know. They seem to be very responsive, but think the error will go away by itself. So please let them know if you have issues. Thanks!

Posted via CB10

O2 in UK and an Update to WhatsApp in BlackBerry World already! :-)

Doesn't seem to find contacts that are NOT local on device.

Posted via CB10

Finally got Whatsapp to Download. Crackberry is on Crack. Posted a old link! Download manually from App World by typing into the search field in App World!

I'm really thankful for this app. But im wondering why it asks for access to emails, pin messages and texts?

Posted via CB10

I'm using Dev Alpha... is that a problem? I don't think so... I'm seeing the app in App World alright... I'm in India.. It downloads and says installing for a while... Then it says "Error installing application..."..

Still no app on BB world :| On T - Mobile/EE in the UK. Has there been any confirmation that you need the latest os?

Posted via CB10

Seems to work fine so far. Native app. However My wife needs to purchase on ios so I think we'll keep using Touch.

Posted via CB10

downloaded it 5 times now. The process is so smooth however the BlackBerry world always says that there was an "error installing application " help pls.

Posted via CB10

Hola, que modelo tienes? he buscado en la en Blackberry World y no me aparece, tambien en Movistar Venezuela.

Hi, how did you make it work? i'm on Movistar Venezuela and still didnt find the app.

BlackBerry should learn to keep their customers in the developing markets happy. Device/OS updates we never get neither do we get new apps on time.. can't get the app neither

Posted via CB10

On Orange France and still nothing in app world! I'm also still waiting on the latest os build that came out a few weeks ago! What the hell is the hold up??!

Posted via CB10

Yeah restarting your BlackBerry definitely wipes contacts. But reinstalling the app fixes it.

National Rail Times App for BB10 (Click to download from BlackBerry World).Posted via CB10

OS Updates NEEDS carrier approval. Nothing to do with Blackberry. Till your lazy provider test the updates on their network it won't be pushed. It's simple and how it's always been done..

saw it... logged in to Appworld, verified and ON... only complaint... some names are not appearing... even though when they are in my phonebook...

I just hit download on this in BB world but nothing happened, now BB world never loads, tried battery pull, reset etc. :/

Just got a notification to upgrade and now everything works flawlessly.

Woohoo!

Posted via CB10

I thought this time round that it was BlackBerry that was pushing the updates directly OTA and not the carrier! You don't see this approval crap done by the likes of Apple or Google...

Posted via CB10

Not an app I was waiting for but I just downloaded. Let's see how it is.

Posted via CB10 on my Z10 L.E.

Did anyone in Bahrain download WhatsApp yet? For me it still says not available

Posted via CB10

Still not available for me either. BlackBerry employee tells me it's not for him yet either and we just gotta give it time lolol. That sucks...

Posted via CB10

Downloaded from app store, did not use the link. Worked fine until I restarted the phone, then lost contacts. Reinstalling brings it back. But the cycle repeats! Had some issues with it not notifying me of new messages.

Posted via CB10

Glad that it is here finally. Just restarted my phone though and whatsapp seems to have lost access to my contacts??? Any idea

Posted via CB10

What am I doing wrong? I can't initiatives any chat what so ever. But my niece have no problem created a group or individual chat with me. I even get notification from the hub.

Cool, great start to version 1. Didn't realise how much I relied on it until I didn't have it for a couple of days.
A little bit primitive compared to older versions such as on the 9810. But way better than not having it and i sure will be updates progressively.
But strange that it shows up in the IP as notifications rather than integrated as a specific WhatsApp category.

Mike posted via CB10

DELETE THE APP AND REINSTALL IT AGAIN! this will fix every problem you have, worked for me and every other person who I suggested this to

Downloaded the update and the contacts problem fixed itself. But after a restart, the contacts disappeared.

Come on whatsapp debs, you can do this!

Posted via CB10

Now if only we got Skype, OoVoO, and Yahoo Messenger. I don't wanna have a front facing cam for nothing like in the PlayBook.

I downloaded, restarted, redownload 3 X, the app remains passive. Unless someone initiate a chat, I cannot initiate from my contact or search what's so ever. Oh well, Skype is around the corner.

Still not available from Thailand and screening the barcode in Appworld says not available for your device. I'm running STL100-2

I own STL001 network unlocked factory unlocked phone os 10.0.10.32 its not available on bbworld can't find it there.
:( why so late

Posted via CB10

Hey guys, any idea on how to invite new contacts to the app? When I click on anyone from the contacts folder nothing happens. Is there an invite over sms option im missing here?

Posted via CB10

Been trying to download whatsapp on my BlackBerry z10 but refuse to download I av try everything still telling me it no available on this device, pls tell me what to do

Posted via CB10

@Favour, open Appworld, the type "Whatsapp" in the search bar, click on it nd download it

Posted via CB10

for thus who get message "Not available for this device", try uninstall openwhatsapp or android whatsapp first from the device. i also got this problem before, but after uninstall openwhatsapp, i search again in blackberry world and finally i can download it. Whatsapp work fine for me!! finally :)

already did that, even tried restarting the phone twice, still says not available for this device

not available for this device.
BB Z10, running OS 10.0.9.348
checked twice, no OS update available.
Still saying whatsapp not available for your device.
HELP !!!!!

Unable to install. If says error installing. Support team says there's nothing they can do :(

Super exiting, been despite waiting for weeks for this. Disappointing doesn't integrate into blackberry hub though.....

Posted via CB10

Very disappointed by the support team! Forums and BlackBerry World are full of reports that the installation fails for many users and still they don't seem to be taking the issue serious enough! I can't believe they wrote "Issue will resolve by itself "

Posted via CB10

Problems during installation:
1) I look up the app in the store
2) I download the app (no issues, app downloads fully)
3) new progress bar for installing gives error and the overlay in the center of the screen says it's installing again (but actually isn't)

My Z10 is running os 10.0.10.58 and I am located in The Netherlands.

I tried restarting, using 3G instead of wifi and have no previous version of WhatsApp installed currently (I did try the side loaded Android port some time ago though). Could people with the installation problem give the same detailed description to make it easier to deduct the cause?

Beste Warnaars, waarom heb jij al 10.0.10.58 welke provider gebruik je?
Ik heb nog .348 en Whatsapp is nog niet downloadbaar voor mij

I'm on ee and been waiting all night to download but it keeps coming up with unavailable for this device. HELP!!!!!
