WES2009: Bloggers Predict the Future... of BlackBerry

Normally us smartphone bloggers are hidden behind our desks and computers and cameras and copious amounts of mobile devices, but at WES 2009 last week a few of us got on stage as part of the BoxTone User Conference to talk BlackBerry Predictions live and in person.

If you have 36 minutes to kill, you can watch the video replay above to see some of your favorite BlackBerry bloggers in action (I had no idea BoxTone was going to put this on the web afterwards... buggers!). Al Sacco from CIO, Kyle McInnes of BlackBerryCool, Simon Sage from IntoMobile, Howie Rapapport of Port3101 and yours truly all take part in the panel discussion fun. We were supposed to make three predictions for BlackBerry that we'll see in the next three years, but in true CrackBerry fashion I made four... the fourth one being the one I really put a lot of effort into and would like to see come true. Interesting predictions, albeit most were "predictable". The following is a post I placed in the general BB discussion forum, but it really fits here...

Here's my assessment...Blackberry (and for that matter, Apple, Palm, Microsoft and Google) are all heading down a path of developing the sustaining technologies that improve the performance of their products in the ways that matter to their customers. This is because their management practices are biased toward:

* Listening to customers,
* Investing aggressively in technologies that give those customers what they say they want
* Seeking higher margins, and
* Targeting larger markets rather than smaller ones.

Disruptive technologies, however, are distinctly different from sustaining technologies. Disruptive technologies change the value proposition in a market. When they first appear, they almost always offer lower performance in terms of the attributes that mainstream customers care about.

Therefore, they open new markets. Further, because with experience and sufficient investment, the developers of disruptive technologies will always improve their products' performance, they eventually are able to take over the older markets. This is because they are able to deliver sufficient performance on the old attributers, and they add some new ones.

Go back in time to when RIM first appeared. They came on the scene as disruptive technology. They did one simple thing and they did it well...e-mail. As a result, they took out the leading firm at the time...Palm.

Palm was focused on sustaining technology and moved away from their very own disruptive technology, which was providing an electronic version of your calendar, tasks and contacts that could speak with your computer. When they came on the scene as disruptive technology, they took out the leading firm at that time, Franklin Planner.

Do you see the trend? RIM and others are now ripe for disruptive technology to take them out. They are trying to add more and more "things" to their core offering, which is a communication device. Convergence is good to a degree. At some point, it becomes bloated with truly unnecessary functions creating an opportunity for someone else (Franklin - Palm - RIM - ???).

I think you're exactly right. In the past few years we've seen RIM go in a totally new direction, and not one that I'm really that fond of. They went from creating absolutely rock solid business devices focused on productivity and email to expanding in every direction imaginable in the mobile arena. Look at what the result is: Blackberry Storm. A complete mess of an operating system, which still today reeks of 'beta' status. They have lost sight of their original offering and if they continue down this line will DEFINITELY be dethroned by a new disruptive tech as you put it.

I keep seeing calls for threaded SMS. However, I'm convinced all my blackberries have had it. Definitely my curve 8310 had it, and I'm pretty sure my 7750 and 8700 too. When they received an SMS, pulling it open had all the SMS to and from that recipient listed in a thread.

What am I missing that you and so many others are asking for?
