Earlier this month Verizon pushed out its Backup Assistant to the Tour, and now it looks to be hitting Storm2 users as well. Over the last few days, users noticed the icon popping up in their devices. A quick click and it was installed and ready to go. The Backup Assitant is a no-frills app that backs up your contact data to Verizon's cloud. Its handy to have since you don't really have to think about it or do much at all to get it to work. I think the big advantage is for those users coming from a dumbphone toa BlackBerry, as it allows to easy contact transfer. If you're a Storm2 user you should see the icon on your homsecreen, but if not, you can try resending your service books or rebooting your device.

Ive had this on my Storm 2 for a week now

Noticed it yesterday(4/11/2010). I have the Storm 2. Didn't know what the icon was, but to my relief, it was what I was looking for. Now if my wife's Curve would get it things would be great. Talk about a nightmare to get everything moved over from a non BB phone!

what about the step child. It needs love too dammit...

I feel the same way. Like my Storm is the product of an affair between a smartphone and a dumbphone. People know it exists, but no one talks about it for fear that people will find out you have it. LMAO

was it loaded in all these old contacts I had from over 2 years ago back into my phone... so I had to go through my phonebook and manually delete them! Argh!

when it said it was going to restore your old contacts, you have to hit MENU and then choose the option for a new user. Then it will ask for a new PIN and then backup your current phone's contact info. The old contacts on backup assistant from when you had a regular phone would get wiped out. I had the same issue when i loaded it onto my Tour but luckily saw the new user option.

I found skydeck to be a better app than this. many more options.

I've had this on my Storm for a few weeks now. I didn't see how you're supposed to retrieve your contacts from the backup. It's great to be able to back them up but what's the point if you can't get them back?

I've been using Google Sync to back up my contacts and my Calendar, so this app does nothing for me.

PossumPete

Thanks for mentioning Google Sync. I started using it yesterday. I now have my work Outlook calendar merging with my iCal from my Mac at home all on a widget on my Google homepage. Goodbye Entourage! Goodbye DM for Mac! Hello Google Sync!

On your first time doing a backup, if you had previously backed up contact info to Verizon from another phone, it will download/update the old info to your current phone. This will wipe all your current contacts on your current phone. The key is to set-up a new pin and follow the prompts to replace the old data with the new info.

It doesn't wipe away your contacts.. Just backs them up OTA. Its a great app to have just in case your phone is lost or broken.. It beats the desktop manager..

I don't seem to have it. I rebooted and still nothing. I'd resend service books if I knew how. :)

It just shows up on the main screen, not in a subfolder?

someone could send you the direct download link for it from their web browser history. i would but i have the tour.

It was on my Tour as soon as I downloaded the new 5.0 OS but when I downgraded back to the 4.7 not available.

I do not like the 5.0 OS on the Tour so I guess I have to give up the back-up Assistant. bummer

I've had this on my Storm 1 for over a week now. Works great.

Emtronics

Where did you get it for the Storm 1?

For me, it has been two phones ago that I last used backup assistant. Since then, I have done a lot of deleting, updating phone numbers, etc. I failed to realize that when I installed and ran Backup Assistant for the first time, that it would download all of my old contacts (including a lot that I no longer wanted, and for the ones that still exist, their OLD phone numbers). Not only was this confusing, but it seemed to do everything in multiples of ten. Every time Backup Assistant had a record that didn't exist in my current phone book, VIOLA! it placed TEN idential contact items in my phonebook. Every time it had a record with a phone number discrepancy, SAME THING! It gave me TEN (10) copies of that outdated contact! Thank God blackberry had the foresight to not allow selecting multiple contacts at once to delete. It only took me about an hour and a half to remove the extra 580 contacts and get back down to the proper 124, then another several hours calling/texting duplicated contacts with phone number discrepancies to figure out which was the right number.... I know a lot of this was my fault...as soon as it started downloading contacts I thought, "oh crap...i'll have to re-delete those 30 or so old contacts I don't need anymore." Little did I know that I would have to sift through 10x duplicated contacts and delete 580 items...one at a time. FML

So yeah I'm not really seeing why this is a big deal. They sent ANOTHER link for a ANOTHER useless app. How many people here have a BB raise your hand . . . good, keep your hands up. Now put your hand down if you DON'T have a PC/Mac . . . right oh, I can see that everyone still has their hands up. Here's the big question, why don't you backup your BB on your own comp?

Only useful for people new to BB.
