Tango and Cash

Last week, following our CES interview with BlackBerry CEO John Chen, I joined Rene Ritchie for a Vector podcast to talk about What's going to Happen to BlackBerry.

What transpired was "90 minutes of podcast magic", as we dove through various topics, picking up the conversation from our last Vector podcast on What Happened to BlackBerry.

I highly suggest listening to the show, but if you're more the scan and read type, we took the liberty of having the podcast transcribed. What follows is 15,000 words of raw BlackBerry talk. I did some minor edits here and there just to clean up bad transcriptions and cut out some of the non-value added banter. Happy reading!!

 Don Melton on transcoding video

Vector is our cross-platform, cross-site podcast where we talk about the technology that matters to all of us. Hosted by Rene Ritchie, it's seriously my new favorite podcast that I *actually* listen to and sometimes appear on.

In this episode, Don Melton, former Engineering Director of Internet Technologies at Apple, deep-dives into his non-browser-based passions: Blu-Ray, transcoding video, H.264, and managing massive amounts of media. Bottom line, if you want to get your videos onto your devices, and you're not afraid of command-lines or codecs, you're in for one hell of a ride. But, yeah: Warning: Contains extreme nerdery.

Last weekend, just moments before the Globe & Mail published their factually challenged article on BlackBerry, I had the opportunity to sit down and get the real scoop from Kevin Michaluk, someone uniquely in position to give us a much better, much fairer accounting of what exactly happened with BlackBerry. You can find the audio again, below, and for the first time, here's the complete transcript. Here's where Kevin's explains to us what the hell is happening with BlackBerry. The reaction to the iPhone, the detour of the PlayBook, and the launch of BlackBerry 10. No. Holds. Barred.

Kevin Michaluk on what happened to BlackBerry

It happened to Palm. It's happening to BlackBerry. Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Samsung might be insulated by their revenue from other businesses, or they might not. No company stays on top, or even in the game, forever. So, we interrupt our usual programing to get Kevin Michaluk of CrackBerry.com back on the line so he can explain to us what the hell is happening with BlackBerry. The reaction to the iPhone, the detour of the PlayBook, and the launch of BB10. No. Holds. Barred.

 Kevin Michaluk and smart watches

Introduced in May 2013 and hosted by Rene Ritchie, Vector is our new Mobile Nations podcast that focuses on analysis. The show has been receiving rave reviews since launching, and has routinely been in the iTunes' Top 20 tech podcasts.

This week yours truly had the pleasure of joining Rene to talk about smart watches, what they mean for traditional watch enthusiasts, for geeks, for the mainstream, for the tech industry, and for Google, Microsoft, BlackBerry, and Apple. Also: Samsung Galaxy Gear!

As I say on the podcast, I'm not a watch expert, but watches have been a passion of mine for many years now (heck, I own watchreviews.com and timecrunch.com... if only I had the time to get a site launched!) and have a lot of thoughts on the subject. Enjoy the show!
