Untappd for BlackBerry

A few weeks back we checked out the beer lovers social network Untappd. Unfortunately until now, only those on newere devices with BlackBerry 6 could get in on the fun due to the design of the mobile site. Well today Untappd announced that they have made a BlackBerry OS 5 site that will work on older devices as well. So now anyone not running BlackBerry 6 can get in on the fun as well.

BlackBerry 5 user can now rejoice and raise a pint with their friends on Untappd! Today we are launching a BB5 optimized version of our mobile web site. This site has been tailored to operate smoothly on the BB5 browser and has been visually optimized for both 320px wide and 480px wide screens. We apologize to all of the BB5 users out there who have had to wait to join in. Our main mobile site uses several web technologies that aren't supported by the older browser software, but after some tweaking and re-tooling, we're all ready for you! To access the mobile site, simply head over to http://m.untappd.com and you will be sent to the BB5 compatible version!

In case you missed it, Untappd is essentially a Foursquare for beer drinkers. Check-in with whatever brew you're enjoying, add your location and you're done. You'll earn badges along the way and be able to toast your friends in the virtual pub. If you're at all a beer drinker it is definitely worth checking out. Totally free and totally fun. Hit the link below to sign up, then head to m.untappd.com on your device to check-in.

The Blackberry 5.0 site looks nothing like the pictures here on crackberry. Its very stripped down and generic looking and not the easiest to navigate. I'll still use it since I have no choice but it sucks not having that "app" look to it like the pictures show.

Hey Damenace,

This is Greg from Untappd. I'm sorry to hear that. We tried to make the look and feel very similar - however with the older non-webkit browser - it make it a bit more challenging. We also wanted to allow users to use the back button - hence our decision to go with a "[paged-style" instead of an AJAX loading style.

We would love to hear any additional feedback you have had - we're all about making a user experience better! Let us know at http://help.untappd.com.

Thanks,
Greg

Its aight Greg. Not your fault Blackberry is behind on the times and only their newest phones can use your site at its optimum best. Most of us Blackberry users know if you dont have a BB that came out within the last month then theirs always gonna be things that you're missing. I have a Storm 2 and im hoping to upgrade my phone to a 6.0 phone as soon as verizon gets one i like!

I can't even log in to the mobile site. Bold 9000 running 5.0.0.1036.

Awesome news. The site is great, but I've been having to carry my iPod touch with me when I drink in hopes that there's WiFi where I'm at so I can actually use it. Glad they've taken the time to bring us OS 5 people into the loop.

swiedom

any ideas of making an app rather than using a web page?

For anyone having troubles, make sure javascript is enabled.

Try it and see how the site loads.

Some say bolt isnt webkit, but it is.

remmy00

ok.. maybe clueless but how do we check in with this?

Drkobs,

This is Greg from Untappd. You want to go to the top-right button that says "Drink Up". There you can select the beer you have to check-in.

For more information on navigation with Untappd head over to our help page at http://untpd.it/navigation

Cheers,
Greg

All I have to say is thank you for the quick response to our request. I wish other sites responded just as fast.

I can log in OK, but using the native browser on my 8530 I only get the 'friends' tab at the top of the page. If I use opera mini, I get all 4 tabs but only as text links rather than tabs (and the mouse on OP5 sucks; constantly all over the page!). Maybe I'll try the bolt browser and see how it does.

Great site, just hope I can actually use it soon!

So can those of us with a Pearl Flip 8230 not us Untappd? Looks like a fun app, but I can't seem to log-in with either the BlackBerry browser or Opera Mini. Am I SOL or am I doing something wrong? (not sure what OS the 8230 has)

Thanks for any help/info!
