Twitter for BlackBerry

Twitter for BlackBerry has again received an update in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. Some new UI tweaks and enhancements keep the goods coming in this round. RIM took in tons of customer feedback and has pumped out a new beta version (which sadly I've yet to find in the Beta Zone myself) with great new features. Updates in Twitter 2.0 include:

  • Color Refresh: This update features a lighter color scheme consisting of light blue with a shade of white. This new, smooth color scheme makes it easy to follow where you are in the timeline and has been incorporated throughout the app.
  • Compose a Tweet: It's all about options! By default, the Tweet composer is "hidden" from the Home timeline but accessible from the new "Compose Tweet" bar located below the nav bar as displayed in Option 1 below. Clicking the "Compose Tweet" bar will bring up the Tweet composer at the bottom of the screen, similar to if you're composing a Tweet via the Menu or by using the same hotkey that you would use to compose an email message from the BlackBerry message list (for example, in English, the hotkey is ‘c' if using a QWERTY keyboard). Alternatively, you can choose to display the Tweet composer as a static fixture at the top of the Home timeline (see Option 2).
  • Trending Topics now with local trends support: A Trending Topics icon has been added to the nav bar and now includes local trends support. Local trends helps you keep in touch with the trends in your area while on-the-go with the Twitter app.
  • My Profile: Now you can access your profile quickly and easily from the nav bar (or the Menu). And, you'll notice that the icon is personalized with your profile picture to better help you identify the account that you're logged into (teaser: this feature will be especially helpful should we include multi-account support in a future release. #justsayin =D).
  • Performance Enhancements: Last but certainly not least, we've included some performance enhancements to improve the overall usability of the app.

Twitter for BlackBerry should be showing up in the BlackBerry Beta Zone today for registered users (if you don't see it now keep checking back). If you're not yet registered, head to the link below to get started.

Adam bro, It's there for users who invited to color survey. Downloading now.

Seperate "quote option" comes back! We got only problem, quoting your own tweets and tweets from protected accounts. But we can use "Send to" option for it...

I have this version for quite a while, and I'm not a Beta Zone user because version 2.0 was released on May for all users, maybe this is version 2.1, could you check this.

This is the Beta Zone's new 2.0.0.15 we're talking about. AppWorld has 2.0.0.11.

Yes Jon, its a very small update just slight changes to the UI as far as i can make out.

I did the color survey but I'm not sure that my input helped much seeing as I'm completely colorblind... :P

Great update, though!

Does this app remember the last tweet viewed yet? That was always the reason I could never use it. Backing out of the app and not hitting End would drive me nuts because upon returning to my timeline I'd have to scroll through tweets backwards. So annoying.

jborfeo Jun 24, 2011 at 12:58 pm

That's a negative. I was definitely for this and made it know through BETA testing. I even got it listed as a feature request, and it was received well from other BETA testers. I will not use this app until that happens.

  • Reply

Phony bologna Jun 24, 2011 at 1:46 pm

Isn't this feature kind of a no-brainer? I don't know how so many users tolerate this so well.

  • Reply

leejayknapp Jun 24, 2011 at 12:08 pm

I Havent found anything has changed in general running of the app so far, its still very slow and takes 15 minutes to load new tweets (over exaggeration?) but still a better UI to some extent but id prefer the app to run efficiently then be made to look prettier.

But for BETA testing i cant see a whole lot thats new apart from the tool bar changes.

I don't understand. I used to be part of the beta Twitter program and now it's not showing up under my programs (or eligible programs). Any ideas on how to get it back?

  • Reply

Altarocks Jun 24, 2011 at 12:49 pm

You're not alone. I seem to recall a message sent from the BZ Twitter program saying the Beta has ended. I used to be in it as well, but looks like it left.

Gnome Jun 24, 2011 at 12:14 pm

They have implemented regional trending. I asked for this in the last beta and I'm really glad to see it added. Still doesn't remember last tweet read though - a major failing in my opinion. Having said that this app gets better and better with each iteration. I like the hint at multiple account support as well.

ive tested it for BETA for possibly an hour max! and its so slow loading new tweets i stopped participating and going back to ubersocial!

seems to run smoother and update quicker but still not as good as UberSocial for Blackberry. i just keep it for the push notifications, if Uber added that i'd delete this one and never use it.

How about stop beta testing and release the 2.0 facebook and twitter updates. I don't use twitter but I just think that it's so stupid that it's taking this long.

Yeah. It didn't show for me either and I was part of the Twitter beta from the beginning. It seems that was a survey I did not respond to, hence I was not included in this release. I just sent them a quick 2 sentence email, and they responded 20 minutes later letting me know they added it back to my eligible programs. Simple. I like the changes, and will do some tweeting over the weekend to check it out further.

Definitely enjoying this update - UI is much better (quicker access to trending topics, my profile) and it seems to be loading much quicker then previous versions/betas.

Ubersocial blows. So cluttered and the UI is horrible.

This app keeps getting better and better. keep up the good work RIM.

  • Reply

djdazm Jun 25, 2011 at 12:40 am

I agree about Uber. Tried it once because I temporarily needed a separate account and it's ridiculous-looking...

T4BB is simple and just works! It's not perfect because it does seem to load slowly at times and I find that it has a delayed reaction to phone orientation on my Torch but I'd rather stick to it than anything else.

dterio Jun 24, 2011 at 3:28 pm

Another RIM FAIL. Can't even access Beta site from BBerry browser! Keep up the good work Waterloo

I am completely satisfied with this update. The lighter UI is amazing. I was skeptical at first. Twitter for Blackberry just keeps getting better and better. Seems to load faster too.

Also..does anyone have the OTA link for it? Countries not being members are always out of beta testing which is very unfair...:/

You're welcome...
Yes, you can install the app on your Torch. Here a good tip (how to install/remove apps with DM (Desktop Manager)): "//helpblog.blackberry.com/2011/02/add-and-remove-blackberry-apps/". Put "http:" before the link. Bravo!
