Courtesy of @BBTweeps we have a fresh leak of the Official Twitter for BlackBerry. We thought the client would be available by now, but it seems its had some hold ups, so hopefully this leak will keep everyone happy for another week or two :-) Features in this version include:

  • Option to disable the navigation bar
  • Option to disable the update box in the application home screen
  • Option to set the font for your time line
  • View and create lists
  • When viewing user profile, click on the avatar to enlarge
  • Option to edit profile
  • The application now uses data cache for faster performance

The app is currently in beta so you may have some issues, but give it a go and let us know how its working out for you in the comments. Hit the link below to download.

Off the bat I think UberTwitter looks more appealing.

  • Reply

BBThemes Apr 1, 2010 at 11:18 am

as mentioned its alot faster, and seems to load more tweets at a time, they still need to go lower than every 5 mins though.

now patiently waiting for BBM 5.0.1 leak :)

I assume there's no push?

  • Reply

syllableslayer Apr 1, 2010 at 11:25 am

There's actually push for direct messages! Try it out, its great :>

  • Reply

eye4ni Apr 1, 2010 at 11:33 am

push only for direct messages. If they could use push for @replies it would be near-perfect

  • Reply

neuropolis Apr 1, 2010 at 12:48 pm

for both @mentions and DMs.

  • Reply

CrackBerryV79 Apr 1, 2010 at 1:22 pm

'Push' is only for the DMs... you can set your notifications for 'replies only' if you wish, but they'll only appear with your refreshes (whatever you have them set for).

Still, that's a pretty neat feature. Not quite 'Push' but I do enjoy not having that icon pop up for everything.

  • Reply

eduardo.objio Apr 1, 2010 at 3:04 pm

I advise you to d/l again, coz' I pretty much have both mentions for DM and replies. This leak feels very solid, I like it a lot and also, it says that this "pilot app" will only be valid until June 30th 2010. Hopefully before that we'll see the final version.

  • Reply

CrackBerryV79 Apr 1, 2010 at 6:25 pm

That's not "Push" - only the DMs are 'pushed' to your phone; they come through as soon as they are received. Mentions can be set in your notifications, but they'll show when your app refreshes. If you refresh every 5 min or so, you probably couldn't teLl the difference.

  • Reply

eduardo.objio Apr 2, 2010 at 10:02 am

Oh I see, and yea I have it set up for 5 min. Still, previous beta didn't have it, so I like the fact that this one does. Thanks for clarifying!

  • Reply

jbenkelman Apr 1, 2010 at 11:51 am

I have been testing since it came out...and I love it. It does everything I need, with a great CLEAN look to it. Uber started looking too "free" and not professional anymore

EDIT**
This version ROCKS. The new features to update your profile, picture, lists, and replies is awesome! This is the best I have ever used.

Its a million times faster too! AWESOME!

Im a big twitter fan, and this is very fun! @jbenkelman

This Twitter app is VERY nice. I liked Ubertwitter, but I didn't like the flooding of notificatons. This one just gives the red star and you can go from there. It's neat, clean and works so much better for my casual usage of Twitter. I am not a hardcore user, so this is perfect. Always liked the clean looks of the RIM versions of these apps, now, if they just work as good as they look. Twitter, so far, so good.

  • Reply

oanda8311 Apr 1, 2010 at 11:23 am

Tried the RIM twitter app and I still think SocialScope is the best app out there.

  • Reply

elgrant Apr 1, 2010 at 11:47 am

I agree...social scope #1...

What I don't like about this twitter app is that when you type "@" it doesn't suggest names, like ubertwitter and social scope do.

  • Reply

skizuhm Apr 1, 2010 at 2:17 pm

Agree, the @ autocomplete is something I miss, but I would imagine they'll add that at some point. One puzzling thing I noticed, unable to completley exit the program; well I haven't discovered a way. ????

  • Reply

leilani_J Apr 1, 2010 at 10:26 pm

to exit, just go to options and logout. otherwise, you are always logged into the app.

  • Reply

bigjman Apr 1, 2010 at 2:23 pm

if you're composing a direct message, it will do the auto-complete once you start typing the recipient's name.

  • Reply

fleander Apr 1, 2010 at 11:25 am

have SocialScope as well...think that if they do not update soon though, their features will be old. Something that is missing in the BB version - insert URL / and the chat feel of DMs like Social has it.

RedBank Apr 1, 2010 at 11:25 am

Since I was expecting to try the beta BBM today (date got pushed up).

UberTwitter vs BBTwitter is the test for today

  • Reply

kellidotca Apr 1, 2010 at 11:25 am

But it would be perfect if it allowed more than one account.

  • Reply

DITTO!!! And name suggestion when typing "@"

  • Reply

sgtmilstack Apr 1, 2010 at 12:15 pm

T4BB maybe faster and all, but that absent feature (and others) puts a dent in efficiency. Push mentions is not enough for me to switch.

UT for my Storm.

  • Reply

demzzy Apr 1, 2010 at 11:26 am

You still can't edit the retweet which is minor I guess for what else has been fixed... But still it would of been a welcomed addition..

I think I still prefer UT for the option to edit a retweet. I like the interface though. Nice and clean.

UberTwitter is better

  • Reply

I gotta disagree... so far, this is blowing UberTwitter out of the water.

  • Reply

stoneland Apr 1, 2010 at 12:04 pm

i have is that you can't edit a retweet. it's also a little slow for me, especially when typing a tweet. otherwise i love the design and colors used. everything looks cleaner and professional.

  • Reply

D_Town Apr 1, 2010 at 2:28 pm

why do you say that?

personally i prefer the multiple accounts on uber as well as the fact that i can read complete tweets without having to scroll. I think they are both nice, but not sure if either blows the other one out the water.

  • Reply

leilani_J Apr 1, 2010 at 10:35 pm

i'm not discounting ubertwitter just yet. but since using this for about a week now, i haven't had the urge to return to uber.

just a note: i love how images are displayed as opposed to uber. that is a really cool effect.

ubertwitter also ate up a lot of my battery life (the latest update, i noticed this). the official beta hasn't done that yet, and it doesn't appear it will. another plus for this version.

also, i haven't noticed any slow loading. it loads faster than UT.

  • Reply

JerseyBred323 Apr 2, 2010 at 1:34 am

UT is better. T4BB is has a very nice UI and a lot of promise but it's lacking features that UT has had for a while. The developers over at RIM need to review UT's features and then aim to outdo UT with their official release.

Just tried to update my previously leaked install of Twitter for Blackberry. Followed the link, chose OS 4.5, and was asked if I wanted to update 1.0.0.28 to 1.0.0.28.

Any luck on the higher OS versions?

Aside:
I too used UberTwitter for a time, but found that my battery life was affected, and it seemed to chew through a lot of memory. I've found the RIM client to be much better on both, possibly due to the push nature of the updates. Of course ymmv, and even then you still may not like it if you are a Twitter power user.

  • Reply

Schmiesus Apr 1, 2010 at 11:43 am

I noticed with the newest version of ubertwitter that my phone was barely making it through the day.

so far i'm liking the Rim version seems quick.

works fine on OS 5.0 using the newest version of the beta

  • Reply

robertdusa Apr 1, 2010 at 12:30 pm

Just tried again, almost an hour later. 1.0.0.37 downloading now.

I hope this 'leak' stays up until the end of next week, waiting for Rogers to deliver my new 9700, and I don't want to have to use UT until RIM makes the app publicly available.

No hate towards UT mind you, I just digged the RIM client over the competition.

  • Reply

Blacklac Apr 1, 2010 at 12:37 pm

Do you currently have a phone? If so, just download it and do a "3rd Party App Backup" and it will save the file. I doubt they would pull all the links anyways.

  • Reply

robertdusa Apr 1, 2010 at 12:45 pm

If worse comes to worse, then I'll give that a try.

Totally off topic; when I do get.the 9700, can I just cram my SD card into it? Meaning, will it preserve the contents without reformating, and just 'go' with it?

  • Reply

Yandar Apr 1, 2010 at 4:31 pm

Yes. SD cards are fully transferable without damaging the contents.

how did you manage to download 1.0.0.37 on OS 4.5? :(

  • Reply

robertdusa Apr 4, 2010 at 7:52 pm

I'm not smart enough to know the back end of things. I just followed the links on the post, and chose OS 4.5. Maybe if you give it a try again it might work for you? As mentioned, the first time I tried, it wanted to download 1.0.0.28, which I already had installed. An hour later I tried again and it downloaded 1.0.0.37 successfully.

Hope you got it working.

  • Reply

robertdusa Apr 1, 2010 at 12:43 pm

Nice speed improvment on my 8310, can only imagine what it'll be like on the 9700.

Now if only RIM would update the Facebook app.

  • Reply

Like somebody suggested before - RIM should've just bought Uber or SocialScope. Although the app seems to have improved, it's still has ways to go to measure up with Uber & SocialScope...

Just my opinion.

Prefer this to the previous beta release, still a bit ugly and could use a few more optimisations. Glad it now has mention notifications.

IMO TweetGenius > T4BB > UT

I love TweetGenius. However, if you could add text to RTs on this version I think its giving TG a good run for its money. Plus this one is free. I think i payed like $7 for TG.

I don't tweet that much,I check it a few times a day, but I don't keep it open or have alerts. I used UT for quite a while and just switched to Twit for BB and like it much better. Loads more quickly, almost no mem leak and it's much cleaner.

  • Reply

elgrant Apr 1, 2010 at 11:49 am

What I don't like about this twitter app is that when you type "@" it doesn't suggest names, like ubertwitter and social scope do.

As well as support for multiple accounts for businesses or people with a personal and business account.

  • Reply

It's a little bit of a round-about way of doing this, but you can edit retweets by copy and pasting. Sure, it's not that efficient, but it is an option.

  • Reply

chirmer#CB Apr 1, 2010 at 7:32 pm

  • Reply

You answered your question. twitter.com doesn't allow that, so naturally twitter for blackberry wouldn't, either.

I like it. I would love to continue if.... they had a shrink tweet option, tweetlonger and put the @ sign to show your friends. Pretty cool. Came along way.

  • Reply

CrackBerryV79 Apr 1, 2010 at 12:28 pm

It's MUCH faster now. I too have been testing this since the beginning officially, and this is more than likely my Twitter app of choice now. TG's UI is still tops to m features are lacking; UT has every feature imaginable, but does seem to look a bit ugly and "free" (lol). This app seems to be a near-perfect blend. (Excluding SC from this since they NEVER update and only like 100 of us have it)

I would love to see the Friend Picker (@___) suggestions and Edit Retweets function - I'm hoping that the reason we haven't seen them yet isn't because those are options that aren't available on the actual Twitter website itself, and as an "official" client/app they're staying completely true to the site. That would suck. These two additions (plus avatar zooming) would make this app perfect.

  • Reply

stoneland Apr 1, 2010 at 12:31 pm

I agree, CrackBerry. Those options aren't available on the actual Twitter site (which I never really liked, but I didn't mind since I rarely tweet from the site anyway), so it's likely they will remain "true" to the site, unless they implement it on their web interface as well.

  • Reply

sagardavul Apr 1, 2010 at 12:32 pm

have installed and using it. really nice looking and way faster than ubertwitter. But, I still miss tweetlong feature in Ubertwitter. hope the official version comes with this. It's really nice so far, may be I will ditch Ubertwitter in a day or two. :-) This has got so neat look. well, that could be due to still in development and release phase. who knows... if they go to more commercial and starts including annoying ads in between at later time.

  • Reply

asu1996 Apr 1, 2010 at 12:34 pm

Does anyone know why when I open the app it doesn't refresh? I have to manually go to the menu and hit refresh. Is this an option at this point? I don't keep the app running all the time because these kill your battery but I like to close and then reopen like with Ubertwitter and it automatically refreshes. I have the check mark under refresh automatically but it doesn't seem to be working. Thanks in advance.

  • Reply

stoneland Apr 1, 2010 at 12:49 pm

it doesn't happen with me either. another reason why i prefer UT for now. also, i highly doubt this app will incorporate twitlonger when the twitter web interface doesn't allow that...people need to realize that some things will not be included in the official twitter app.

  • Reply

wcmarchese Apr 1, 2010 at 2:00 pm

not positive, but i'd say it doesn't refresh becuase it's a Blackberry app and it's got the push feature, so you don't really need to refresh -- that's IF it's doing what Facebook and Myspace official BB apps do.

Have they made reading tweets available when offline yet? I am often out of my coverage zone and read in batches. Last version wouldn't even allow me to open the client if I didn't have a connection.

The update is awesome..
1. really like the cache enabled
2. also the font change feature..
3. @ mentions do not load every time.. the older tweets remain on the screen
4. definitely as fast as the other twitter apps

Hope they release this app soon with more features like tabs for lists, and push mentions ( notifications for mentions are available with this update which is good )

i have been using SocialScope for more than 5 months.. logged off SS after a long long time.. will use this one for sometime.

This app needs integration for @ suggestionsfor bit.ly or tinyurl, tweetphoto, and twitlonger. Also, not being able to edit retweets is lame. The UI is nice though.

Since updating to the official Tour OS from Verizon my UT has not been letting me know when I have new tweets. It used to vibrate and flash the LED. Now nothing. Went through every setting on the phone and still nothing. UT is now deleted and using T4BB and love it. Clean simple and fast.

They put a stop to that fast. Anyone has the COD files?

I like the changes a lot. It works much better now. BUT I can't seem to RT out of it. The RT interface comes up but when I hit send it never shows up in the timeline. Please fix this and allow people to edit the RT before sending.

  • Reply

stoneland Apr 1, 2010 at 2:21 pm

cocatholicdad, the RT feature DOES work. it isn't supposed to show up in the timeline (it doesn't on the website www.twitter.com either). and you can't edit RTs on the website, so it's no surprise that the feature isn't in the official twitter app.

when are people going to realize this? other apps like UT have that option because they're not the "official" one.

  • Reply

D_Town Apr 1, 2010 at 2:25 pm

it has a clean interface with nice options. However, i have become bored with the RIM interface on FB, MySpace and now, Twitter. Its nice , but it still has those same scroll issues that make it so that you may or may not be able to read the last line of posts. (same issue with FB app)

Its pretty easy to use and is pretty smooth, BUT still not better than Ubertwitter to me.

Add a friend picker so I don't have to memorize all the names, and let us add on to the retweets and maybe add twitlonger and I will leave uber!!!

  • Reply

stoneland Apr 1, 2010 at 4:02 pm

this app will probably not have that. Keep in mind this is Twitter for BlackBerry, not like UT. It'll obviously be tied to the twitter website. And twitter.com doesn't have editing of retweets (in case you haven't noticed) and doesn't have a twitlonger option (in case you haven't noticed that, either).

So until Twitter changes their site and how they allow updates, those features won't be in the app.

Any of the above-mentioned problems because I actually had an official invite from RIM to begin with... Who knows.

All I know is this app is near-final version-ready. I would love to see a TwitLonger and FriendPicker feature, but (again) these aren't official Twitter features, so I won't be heartbroken if they never materialize. Editing RTs is simple enough with copy & paste if you just have to add your two cents.

If you find yourself constantly using TwitLonger anyway #youredoingitwrong and #talkingtoodamnmuch

I was using UBERTWITTER. BB Twitter is faster and has a much cleaner look and navigates better. Also, I love how it features the twitpic very large and faster. They only thing I see that it needs is the ability to sign in to mulitple accounts. I have a personal and a professional twitter profile and it would be great to switch between both. Other than that! I'm sticking with the RIM twitter app!

i installed the leaked beta today and i must say i'm impressed, the app is quick and nimble has a great layout and it just WORKS :] a few things i believe it needs is location-aware integration in tweets, also user profile pictures should be able to be enlarged seemlessly. also in the timeline there should be a caption under everyone's tweet displaying where the tweet was posted from: web, api, etc, and also a friend finder would be nice

  • Reply

Grimagination Apr 1, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Liking it so far and sticking with it. Pros: It’s very quick and doesn’t have the battery drain of Uber. It has a friendlier layout, no ads, ability to modify profile and you can save searches. Cons: I’m not wild about the green highlight color scheme and it doesn’t autopopulate with @. There’s no friends listing and I’ve not found a way to fully close the app. All in all, it’s a great beta though and already a very solid UT competitor. With a few updates, it’ll really take off.

-Mentions need to be pushed to inbox. It's able to in this version but all it says is "you have new mentions". I'd like to actually see the mentions as a conversation.
-Direct messages need to act like text messages(for us 5.0 users) and look as if it's a conversation.
-FRIEND SUGGESTION! I can't remember all of my friends exact names plus they change them once a month.

over all i enjoy the layout and functionality of the new twitter program but there are a few features i think it is missing...

-the option to modify a retweet
-more setup options like disabling location tags
-a user list that can pop up when you go to @ or dm someone
-the option to accept/decline follow requests if your tweets are protected

for now i still prefer ubertwitter but its a good start. will be running both on my bb tour, and see what changes are made as you work towards an official release.

It seems to stop displaying the text I write after I mention two people on my 9700. For example, "@Twitter for @BlackBerry is great" would only show "@Twitter for @B" but it continues to write and sends the whole tweet if I update. The menu seems to be unresponsive when this happens as well. Anyone else able to recreate this bug? It also gives you two "Are yo sure you want to cancel?" windows, one in the Twitter app and one from the OS it seems.

I like it, a lot. Nice, clean look. Fast. I was a happy UberTwitter user previously. But I think I'm liking this better. One little complaint/request. With UberTwitter, I was able to close (not exit) out of the application then access it quickly by pressing & holding down the menu key to access apps that are still open. I wish I had the capability to do that with this app.

Okay. I've deleted UberTwitter and Twiextreme. Both were good, but this is so integrated with the push feature that I'm loving it. It's like the Facebook and Myspace apps, you can be out of the program, but still get the new notifications. I'm telling you, if Blackberry could just get their UI overall tweaked, then they'd be set.

Also, I would like the Facebook app and Myspace app to have the smooth scrolling this one does. It's almost like the kinetic scrolling seen on touch screens.

Just had a brainwave guys so let me share my new found knowledge. Retweeting with the option to Edit on the T4BB is so easy.. and i think it beats copy and paste method.

1) When on a tweet u wanna re-tweet click on options like u normally would but instead of selecting "re-tweet".. select "Send To"

2) Select "Twitter"

3) Select "Tweet"

4) You'd have to type in the "RT" and the persons "@username" whose tweet you're re-tweeting.

5) you can also now type in whatever you wanna add in..

6)click on update

I realise it looks not as quick as just selecting the standard "re-tweet" but in actual use it is more or less. In addition this shows up in your timeline too just like Ubertwitter. Only difference is Ubertwitter (since its not an official app).. can do what it wants and call it a re-tweet.

All it's really done is copied the tweet and pasted it in as a new tweet but then putting in the "RT" and the @username of the original tweeter. Thats exactly what the "Send to" option on the official app does (but without the RT and "@username" which is obviously not an issue as u do intend on editing the original tweet anyway. RIM obviously did have it in mind and knew we would want it but had to stick to Twitter's specifications being the Official app.

All i need now is Geotagging enabled and Ubertwitter will get deleted.
