When it comes to action style games for BlackBerry 10 there's a ton to choose from so the below are a combined effort from myself and a couple of other members on the team. I've left the racing games out of this one as we'll cover those in another post due to there being so many great ones, so the below are what we would class as the best action games you can currently download for BlackBerry 10.

Some of the below will be device dependent due to screen real estate. That said, I suspect that if you are rocking a Q10/Q5 you are probably more of a productivity person than a gamer. But fear not, you folk will get a top productivity selection post too.

Let's crack on with the action...

Modern Combat 4

The Modern Combat series has been a massive hit for Gameloft and praise the lord that they delivered the goods for BlackBerry 10. You'll notice from the above video that although I have the game on my BlackBerry 10 handset I chose to film the video on my PlayBook just because I found the game a little more enjoyable for me on the tablet. But trust me - things are just as good on the Z30/Z10

If it's hardcore combat you're after you can't get better than Modern Combat 4. The controls are easy to use, the graphics are superb and the overall game play is second to none - hence why its sitting at the top of my list.

Major Mayhem

Major Mayhem, from Unity, is the perfect side scrolling game packed full of guns, explosions and all round action. If you missed our original coverage of the game it’s well worth taking a look at the video as it’s a real beauty.

Once Major Mayhem has been dropped to the ground by helicopter he'll run and take cover behind rocks or similar. As the evil Ninjas appear on-screen you need to tap on them for him to lean out from his cover to shoot them. They shoot back though - well, sort of. As they are Ninjas they are armed with throwing stars - most of which are blue and will still cause you damage, but it's the red ones you need to watch out for. They will destroy your body amour so three hits by a red one and its game over.

In terms of this style of game things don't get any better - it oozes excitement.

Galaxy On Fire 2

Although we first went hands on with Galaxy On Fire 2 back when it was released for the PlayBook the space game has had huge success on other platforms as well as BlackBerry 10. If guiding a space craft through the depths of various galaxies sounds your cup of tea you're going to love this one.

The graphics are absolutely stunning with gameplay to match. There's over 30 space ships you can fly, 20 star systems and a lot more to the game than initially meets the eye. This one is space combat at its best!

Anomaly 2

Although I've not played Anomoly 2 myself I've been very reliably informed by other members of the crack team that it's a fantastic tower defense game. Everything looks A1 with Anomoly 2 and judging by the list of features if sure looks like a game that you can really get your teeth into.

  • Morph your troops into war mechs to discover the new face of strategy: each unit has a different mech form with various abilities to help you overcome specific combat situations.
  • Engage in a multiplayer experience unique to Anomaly 2: tower defense vs. tower offense. Play as the towers and destroy the humans or lead the humans to annihilate the alien towers.  Fight across a post-apocalyptic world in a new single-player campaign that offers a more intense strategy experience than the acclaimed original.
  • Carve your own path to victory and create your ultimate battle squad. With over million tactical combinations to build your squad, your options in combat are nearly endless.
  • Dive into a beautifully rendered world, thanks to the team's upgraded and improved visual engine.
  • Experience alternative endings dependent upon your approach to enemy machines in the campaign

This one's a little on the pricey side at five bucks but you get what you pay for.

Jetpack Joyride

Jetpack Joyride is yet another super game that after doing amazingly well on Android and iOS got ported over to BlackBerry 10 - and what a beauty it is. You control Barry and his magical jetpack and the aim of the game is just to get as far as possible. You'll encounter plenty of obstacles along the way and picking up coins and bonus items is a must, but whether you're playing this for just a few minutes or sitting down for a good session, its guaranteed to be addictive and get the adrenalin pumping.

Plus it's free - which we all love.

Badland

There are over 10 million smartphone users playing Badland which pretty much speaks for itself. If that hasn't got your attention then nothing will!

The game is the perfect example of a side scrolling adventure game where your character (which looks a bit like a hedgehog with wings!) must dodge obstacles and maintain a steady pace in order to reach the end of the level. As the background is always moving, if you get trapped, you'll be pulled out of the level to start again.

With delightful graphics and simple one touch controls Badland will suck you in and give you hours of pleasure. With Scoreloop integration you can easily share your score via BlackBerry Games and also see how well your buddies are doing. If you're up for a challenge this is a good place to start.

Fieldrunners 2

If you are into tower defense games you need look no further as Fieldrunners 2 offers everything you would want. One of the great features with the game is that the levels vary in style so you won't be getting bored with repetition.

There's a whole host of enemies - some on foot and some in vehicles, so depending on what's on-screen will depict how much fire power is required to destroy it. There are some additional weapons you can buy at the end of each level - which include air strikes and explosive traps.

Fieldrunners 2 will set you back three bucks but that's money well worth spending as this one offers a shed load of action and will keep you fixed to your BlackBerry constantly. Here at CrackBerry we take no responsibility if you get addicted!

Angry Birds Star Wars

We all know Angry Birds and to be honest any of the games could probably have featured in the top 10, but the Star Wars edition just has that something special. I'm not sure if it's a man thing or not but having the use of a light saber is quite a pleasant feeling and somewhat satisfying - or is that just me?

Have you got 'the force' to destroy all the Pigtroopers? If you haven't played the game yet I'd highly recommend it. You can't go wrong with Angry Birds and the Star Wars edition gives it the most awesome twist possible.

Iron Man 3

If you enjoyed the Iron Man movies, purchasing Iron man 3 for BlackBerry 10 is a must. Another title from Gameloft means you won't get a better experience when it comes to action packed carnage on your BlackBerry. The good news here is that the game is free, although there are some in-app purchases if you feel the need. The only downside is that the file is a big one so make sure you have sufficient memory on your device before starting the download process.

Although Iron man 3 made it to the top 10 it was a tough choice as the likes of Batman and Spiderman are available too and all offer great super hero fun. Iron man 3 gets my personal vote, hence why it's here.

If you feel you have the skills to control Iron man as he dodges missiles and other bad dudes then hit this one up. With it costing not a cent to download go and give it a go. Enjoyment guaranteed.

Dead Space

Dead Space from EA Games is another one that we first saw released on the PlayBook prior to BlackBerry 10 arriving. Things are much the same on BB10 so the above PlayBook video is in place as I'm still a big fan of favoring this style of game on the tablet. Much like Modern Combat 4 you get to control a soldier but this time a futuristic one where you'll have to battle your way through space stations destroying enemies with a selection of weapons.

You may remember that when Dead Space was first released for the PlayBook it had a whopping price tag of $9.99. You'll be very pleased to hear that for BlackBerry 10 you can pick up this action packed game for just under a buck - and it's well worth it.

With tasks to complete as well as just combat, Dead Space is one of those games that you will more than likely keep on your BlackBerry 10 smartphone long term. Even after months of not playing - it's a great one to return to.

You're bringing back memories with the PlayBook / MC4 and Dead Space. Dam! I'm really considering switching from Sprint to have access to a larger screen because they only offer the Q10. A shame though. We shouldn't be limited to certain devices because of carrier. Too bad BlackBerry can't sell them directly to the customers for cheap.

spikesolie

Get it on eBay..n

Wolf35Nine

Ah, that is the issue. With Sprint, the Z10 or Z30 will not work. If it does, please show me how. I rather not spend 500 plus dollars for an unlocked phone on ebay that isn't compatible on their network. I shouldn't have to keep looking for workarounds when it comes down to blackberry whereas I can go to any carrier and get any current model iPhone or Android. I hope Chen and company reads this stuff. Almost impossible to increase US market share if the customers don't have easy access to purchase the devices.

DoryGuy

Any of these work well with a game pad controller?

wout000

This. Is BlackBerry pushing Gamepad compatibility cause my Z10 with a dock and Gamepad would totally replace my need for a console. As I'm a sporadic gamer.

I dunno even with a controller smart phone games generally seem to leave a lot to be desired. AI alone is pretty terrible.

TranceRomance

Great selection of games! And yes I find having a Q10 seems to be more productivity based. Can't wait to see the productivity version of the article.

Careful with Galaxy On Fire 2 to Z30 owners. I uninsulated it a few weeks ago as it kept crashing after only getting 15 minutes into the game. Maybe they've fixed and updated it, maybe not. Really the reviews in BBW.

GOF2 is an excellent game which I played to death on my PlayBook. I'm too cheap to buy it again for my Z10.

Memories indeed!:)

N.O.V.A. 3 is definitely just as good as Modern Combat. I consider it the mobile version of Halo. This game should be up on the list for sure.

Jetpack Joyride? You could have chosen Kiwi Wonder! At least you did not lament Candy Crush not being available.

Agree ! Kiwi Wonder should be on the list

No strategic game similar to game of war which is available to ios users :(

I do have some of these games on my Z10 and Note II, and these are really awesome games. Recommend NOVA games too.

I loved Dead Space on X box! If I purchase Dead Space on my Playbook, can I also download it on BB10, or vice versa? That would be classy. If not it would be the opposite of classy. What would the opposite of classy be?

Posted via CB10

BerryRipe

LoL good question, I sat here thinking but have come up with nothing.

pacman84

I guess "unclassy"? :)
Seriously though, some apps can be bought for one platform and be brought over for free to another (as long as the platforms are BlackBerry 10 and PlayBook OS;)). There should be a list.
I know that it works for PlayEPub Book reader and some games that BlackBerry gave away for free during the Christmas giveaway time. I'll look it up when I remember on Tuesday, as I'll be away from my PlayBook until then.
I really wish that deadspace can be bought on BlackBerry 10 and then be played on the PlayBook, though. That'd be classy, indeed.

Dead Space is a separate purchase. So unclassy Electronic Arts it is.

Mind you, it's only $0.99 for the Z10 version.

Iron man 3 runs awful on the z10.

Six guns is a good game; however, the movie with same title has poor rating on Netflix.

They all should be played on the PlayBook..."AAAAAARGH!" (Charlie Brown voice).

What about Kiwi Wonder? Superb graphics, cute story. Better than Jetpack in my opinion.

Mass Effect: Infiltrator I think looks good.

Posted via CB10

Except, Mass Effect is only on the Z10. Unless that's changed.

Jetpack Joyride is pure crap. There's absolutely no way to restore your in-app purchase of the Counterfeit Machine.

Posted via CB10

Prem WatsApp

I dislike in-app purchases for exactly that reason.

Rather prefer to have a free and full / "pro" / premium version, which I can re-download directly from BBW.

My name is Prem, I'm using BBM ... from my QuZe10 ...whatarhyme...

tryfe

Ditto. I am completely turned off by in-app purchases because of HalfBrick's pos game that they have yet to resolve.

Anyone know if there is a way to fix the orientation problem with GOF2 on .1055. Is it there with .1925?

From my QNX Fueled Z10 with the sound of my Quad Piped Vmax4 as its ring tone!

I'm not interested in games without gamepad support. Touchscreen controls are crap.

Why would you buy and play a cheep made game on a small screen.

Mc4, dead space, and nova 3 are all awesome games, absolutely worth trying.

There should be more support for the PlayBook. It is the perfect gaming device. Why has Gameloft not back ported some of there more recent games?
