Name This Song for the BlackBerry PlayBook by JimmyO Software combines two of my favorite things into one package: trivia and music. Growing up I was always a fan of the game show Name that Tune so it was a no-brainer when I saw this one in App World. I find it to be a fun and addicting game to play if not frustrating at times. There are just some songs I am not familiar with at all (sorry Country). If you're looking for something to keep you entertained click on the break for more information and screen shots.

Players compete against each other to be the first to identify the artist and song being played in the music clip. You're not just competing against other PlayBook owners but people logged in from every game site that hosts it including Facebook and Kongregate. Each match is based on style or category (i.e. Modern Rock, New Alternative, Country, Classic Rock) and consists of five songs. Players choose from among four possible answers and must tap on the corresponding thumbnail. Points are then awarded based on how fast you answer. Whoever has the highest score at the end is declared the winner. If you're not happy with how you're doing simply tap on another match to join.

It is a pretty cool game to play and I find myself spending too much time on it. Some users pointed out connectivity and song delay issues but after installing a recent update I didn't experience this. The only thing I noticed is that you can join a match currently in progress even if it's on Song 5. Other than that I think it's a really good way to challenge your music skills and discover new songs and artists to listen to. Just beware this game might cause you to jump on your computer to download or purchase some of the tunes played. Best of all, it's completely free.

This is a fun app. It was out shortly after the playbook launched but then was taken from app world for some reason and blocked. I was very excited to see it back on appworld this morning when I got up.

Hi folks -

I am the programmer for this and I am glad to see some of your positive comments on this game. I personally enjoy playing it as well and have a few updates that I'm working on (eg 10 questions per match, you can create your own match, some way to send messages to other players, etc) ... these will be released in due course.

Re the question on why it was pulled off the app world - I had pulled the app fairly early on because there was a 'timing' issue that had surfaced on the PlayBook version (that didn't show up in other implementations of the game eg on Facebook); it was bad enough that people were commenting on it in the reviews. I eventually figured out a workaround that I think solves the problem, although every now and then I notice that a song will start after the points counter begins ticking down. I have been communicating with RIM on this since it does work on other implementations so there might be a small glitch on their side somewhere; I am hoping that their next OS release completely solves the issue.

Good job JimmyO !

If more people knew about this app, I am certain that you would have a lot more people downloading it.

If it wasn't for CrackBerry, I would have missed it.

Long live CrackBerry !
