Grab a Telus BlackBerry Q5 from Best Buy Canada for only $99

If you live in Canada and are looking to move into a new BlackBerry 10 device or are just looking to pick up a spare for those 'just in case' moments, you might want to head to Best Buy. Right now, the retailer is offering the BlackBerry Q5 for only $99 with no contract. That certainly beats the $299 pricing on ShopBlackBerry.

As expected, thanks to a bit of an early outing, BlackBerry has now announced the availability of the BlackBerry Leap for Canada. The new BlackBerry Leap will be available from Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless, SaskTel, TELUS, WIND Mobile, ShopBlackBerry, and select Tbooth wireless and WIRELESSWAVE locations starting on May 7th, 2015, for as low as $0.00 on contract.

Canadian carriers preparing for the launch of the BlackBerry Leap

While BlackBerry has been rapidly rolling the all-new BlackBerry Leap out to new areas, one country interestingly left off of the list, which thus far contains France, Germany, Malaysia, US, and UK is Canada. Since the BlackBerry Leap availability started being announced, Canada has taken a 'coming soon' position leaving many folks wondering what the hold up is. That said, it's starting to look as though it won't be that much longer at all for Canadians who want to get their hands on one for a number of reasons.

TELUS BlackBerry Z30 owners can now update to OS 10.3.1

Much like Rogers, the initial push of BlackBerry OS 10.3.1 on TELUS was limited to the BlackBerry Z10, Q10 and Q5, leaving BlackBerry Z30 owners waiting a bit longer. Now though, the update has started rolling out and Z30 owners have the OS update available to them according to several folks in the CrackBerry Forums as well as TELUS' own Twitter support channels. If your device isn't set to automatically download updates, you can now go to Settings>Software Updates and see if it's available for you. Looking for what's new? We got you covered! Passport owner? Well, you're still waiting for now.

BlackBerry Classic owners on TELUS receiving OS 10.3.1.2072 update

Although it started with Rogers, it seems as though TELUS has now joined the party in rolling out OS 10.3.1.2072. We've received several reports the OS is now appearing on devices when owners check for software updates and is readily available to download via OTA. If you're seeing it, go ahead and grab it. Of course, let us know how the process goes for you in the comments. Sadly, it appears as though it's only for the Classic, just as with the Rogers release. No word on any other carriers for the moment.

TELUS could be among the first carriers to roll out BlackBerry 10.3.1

As we already learned during the BlackBerry Classic Q&A panel at the launch event, BlackBerry plans to start rolling out BlackBerry OS 10.3.1 to all in-market devices come February but where the roll out will begin and end still remains a mystery. A new internal document reportedly from TELUS does give us some hints though as it suggests the Canadian carrier will be among the first to have it available.

TELUS sales of the BlackBerry Classic go live!

If TELUS is your preferred carrier and you want to get your hands on the brand new BlackBerry Classic, you can now place your orders. Sales of the new QWERTY smartphone with the traditional navigation keys and trackpad have gone live with two-year contract pricing set at only $50.

If you want to avoid the whole contract thing, you'll be looking at a $550 dip from you bank account to call the Classic yours, though that would be a bit silly considering ShopBlackBerry sells it for $500. Want to know more about the Classic? Check our full review here or hit the TELUS website to place your order as the device is not yet available in store.

The BlackBerry Q5 went on sale today across Canada for about $50 on a two-year contract or $200 on a $150 tab, which falls in line with what we were expecting. Virgin has an exclusive on the red version, and elsewhere you'll only have the black model, even though we've seen the Q5 in white and pink during the launch. Here are some links to everybody putting this on store shelves.

Aug 08, 2013 BlackBerry Q5 pricing for TELUS, Bell and Virgin

We've received several tweets today about the BlackBerry Q5 arriving at several Canadian retailer locations today. The device hasn't as of yet gone on sale at any of them but the stock is most certainly arriving. Over at Mobile Syrup, they've managed to score a few shots from the carriers internal systems that shows the pricing of the device when it goes on sale.

  • Telus - $425 outright with no contract or $49 with a two-year contract.
  • Bell / Virgin - $399 outright with no contract or as low as $49.99 with a two-year contract.

There is sure to be some pricing in-between with the tab offers and such that carriers offer but overall the pricing is as was expected with the exception of Telus. That extra $25 seems likely to turn people off a bit after you add in taxes and such. Also remember, if you fancy a red BlackBerry Q5 that's exclusively available only on Virgin Mobile.

With rumors of the BlackBerry Q5 coming to Fido already out there, another Canadian carrier has joined the mix as well in a more confirmed manner. Koodo has now listed the device on their website as coming soon. Listing only the Black version, folks looking to pick up a BlackBerry Q5 on Koodo will have the option of getting the device for a low $50 with the Koodo tab or $350 outright. Sure you could get a BlackBerry Z10 or Q10 for cheaper with contracts and all that but $350 straight up isn't all that bad for a BlackBerry 10 device. White BlackBerry Q10

After a short exclusivity period, now Rogers isn't the only one in Canada with the BlackBerry Q10 in white. Both TELUS and Bell now offer the white Q10, TELUS has theirs front and center in the online store, as does Bell. Both are $199 on a three-year term, or $700 up-front. It looks like there's no love for WIND just yet.

Even though I tend to favor classic black devices, it was really nice unboxing the BlackBerry Q10 in white when it first launched on Rogers. For some folks, like Kevin, white is the only way to go. Be sure to keep an eye out for these models, since stock may be hard to come by.

Existing Q10 owners, do you wish you held out for the white one? Anyone on Rogers already packing one?

The wireless landscape in Canada is changing once again as TELUS has now announced they've agreed to acquire Mobilicity. The deal worth $380 million will still need to be approved by the Competition Bureau, Industry Canada, and Mobilicity's debtholders. Over the past little while, Mobilicity was looking to have the company change hands due to financial concerns but if all goes through, it will ensure all 250,000 Mobilicity customers continue to have service without disruption.

"A concern for our customers and employees led us to approach TELUS, which has a reputation for a strong customer focus, as evidenced by their industry leading client loyalty," said Stewart Lyons, Mobilicity President. "I am confident TELUS will look after our employees and our customers, mitigating any disruption to their service, while offering the best outcome for all stakeholders."

In addition to maintaining service for customers, TELUS will also retain all 150 Mobilicity employees throughout the transition process and will offer long term employment to those employees. If you're looking for the full details, the press release from TELUS and Mobilicity can be found below.

Unlocking also proves useful if you are a frequent international traveler as you aren't confined to your carrier's roaming plan and can instead use a local prepaid SIM card in an unlocked device.
