May 16, 2013 TELUS agrees to acquire Mobilicity for $380 million

The wireless landscape in Canada is changing once again as TELUS has now announced they've agreed to acquire Mobilicity. The deal worth $380 million will still need to be approved by the Competition Bureau, Industry Canada, and Mobilicity's debtholders. Over the past little while, Mobilicity was looking to have the company change hands due to financial concerns but if all goes through, it will ensure all 250,000 Mobilicity customers continue to have service without disruption.

"A concern for our customers and employees led us to approach TELUS, which has a reputation for a strong customer focus, as evidenced by their industry leading client loyalty," said Stewart Lyons, Mobilicity President. "I am confident TELUS will look after our employees and our customers, mitigating any disruption to their service, while offering the best outcome for all stakeholders."

In addition to maintaining service for customers, TELUS will also retain all 150 Mobilicity employees throughout the transition process and will offer long term employment to those employees. If you're looking for the full details, the press release from TELUS and Mobilicity can be found below.

If you're on Rogers, Fido or TELUS (Yes, that includes Koodo) and are the proud owner of a BlackBerry Z10, you'll want to go ahead and check for software updates on your device. As reported in the CrackBerry forums and witnessed on some of our own devices, software update v10.0.10.85 is now arriving OTA. Yes, that's the software version -- the OS version itself is 10.0.10.672 and the highest release we've seen thus far, including leaks.

Feb 06, 2013 How to unlock your BlackBerry Z10 from Canadian carriers!

Since the BlackBerry Z10 went on sale yesterday in Canada, the CrackBerry forums and twitter have been a buzz with questions on if and how the Z10 can be unlocked. Unlocking your BlackBerry from its native carrier allows you to use a SIM card from another carrier in it. This is especially handy when traveling - instead of roaming you can pick up local SIM cards. In the case of the Z10, there is a different sense of urgency going on. With the Z10 not coming to the US until March, a lot of eager BlackBerry fans in the US are looking to pick up a Canadian Z10, unlock it, and then use it on their local US-based carrier.

When we picked up our Rogers and Telus Z10s yesterday, we immediately tried to unlock them and found the standard third party "instant method" of unlocking wouldn't work. It took our unlocking partner a little time to get it all sorted, but we're now up and running! You can now get your BlackBerry Z10 unlock codes for Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido, Virgin Mobile and Koodo from our CrackBerry Unlocking store at crackberryunlocking.com/blackberry-10. The cost of these unlocks is more than the standard instant unlock, but if you want to unlock your Z10 asap, it's the unlocking store you can trust.

If you're in need of an unlock code you can obtain one from the link below. For instructions on how to unlock your phone, watch the video above where I unlock my Rogers Z10. For written instructions, pricing and more details on unlocking, keep reading below.

While Kevin was getting all drooly over his white BlackBerry Z10 from Rogers, I got up close and personal with the TELUS retail packaging. Though the contents remain more or less the same, it solidifies a few things about what you get from the store. For one, there's minimal carrier branding, both on the box and on the device. Secondly, there are the bare essentials for accessories; you get a USB cable, wall charger, and headphones.

The Brits got first stab at the BlackBerry Z10, and now Canada is next up. Today the Z10 is available on Rogers, Bell, and TELUS, but what's the difference? Pretty slight at the end of the day, but here are the details on their plans in an easy-to-compare format. This is important stuff to know if you're going to be signing on to a three-year commitment, though there are always tab and off-contract options available.

If you really need convincing as to whether or not the BlackBerry Z10 is worth the investment, you'll probably want to check out our insanely long review. Keep in mind that while those three-year commitments may be daunting, the termination fees scale with how long you have left on your contract and are much better than they used to be. Without further ado, here's our breakdown of Canadian service plans for the BlackBerry Z10.

Jan 24, 2013 Rumored BlackBerry Z10 in Canada release date emerges

So there have been some rumors flying around over Twitter, Facebook, the CrackBerry forums, two-way pagers, chain letters and telegraph the last few days about a rumored release date for the BlackBerry Z10 here in Canada (yes I can say "here in Canada" since I'm actually in Canada for once). It's being said that the BlackBerry Z10 will arrive at Telus and Bell on February 5th in both black and white models.

While we can't say either way if this is true, we aren't ruling anything out just yet. No word on Rogers yet in most of the rumors that are floating around, but given Roger's long standing support for BlackBerry over the years we have to believe they'd be right there at the front of the line to launch BB10 as well.

Aug 28, 2012 TELUS on BlackBerry 10 – Will one of Canada’s largest carriers be behind the all-new BlackBerry?

It’s no question that BlackBerry is pushing ahead with the launch of BlackBerry 10. It’s evident in the employee morale, the developer support and even the carrier support. While Kevin was in Waterloo at RIM headquarters, he discussed the carrier support of BlackBerry 10 with Frank Boulben. Mr. Boulben was quite adamant that carriers shared a similar enthusiasm for the new product. Recently I had the chance to visit the TELUS Toronto office during an event and got to talk shop with James Bishop who is Manager of Product Marketing at TELUS, and Brent Johnston who is VP Mobility Solutions at TELUS. Keep reading as we answer the question: Is TELUS behind the all-new BlackBerry and the BlackBerry 10 OS?

Mar 21, 2012 TELUS launches new trade-up program to help you get that new BlackBerry even faster

We all know that having the latest and greatest tech is something that most of us strive to achieve. But we need to be real sometimes; we just can’t always afford the cost of the upgrade, and this is where TELUS plans to help you with their new trade-up program. The new program will allow you to trade in your old smartphone, whether it is a TELUS, Bell, or Rogers device, and get a credit toward upgrading to that latest BlackBerry (or any smartphone). In my opinion this is actually really good timing seeing the launch of BlackBerry 10 is right around the corner.

Of course there are a few details to note in the program, like your phone needs to be in working condition and the screen needs to power on. But if there’s a small scratch or two you should still be able to receive that credit. TELUS also let us know that they will be implementing a limit to the number of handsets that you will be allowed to turn in, and the magic number will be three. So if you have a box of BlackBerry smartphones you can only trade in three, but if you have a few accounts and will be upgrading them all to BlackBerry 10 feel free to bring them in. A little part of the program that I wanted to toss in is that TELUS will be refurbishing the phones you hand in and reselling them to developing countries. But for those devices that have a zero dollar value TELUS will be planting a tree for you, and starting something new to rebuild our planet. The full press release on the new program can be found after the break.
