Another cross platform instant messaging client has made its way over to BlackBerry 10 - this time in the form of Telegram. Unfortunately, it isn't native, but an Android port, although after testing it out it seems to work very well.

Much like Whatsapp, Telegram uses your phone number to register and then shows you other contacts in your address book that also have the app installed. In addition, if a contact downloads Telegram for their smartphone you'll be notified - I like that.

Is it any better than Whatsapp? Not that I can see and of course it isn't a patch on BBM, but the option is there if any of your buddies on other platforms use it. Taking a quick look in the Google Play store it seems to be fairly popular with Android users, but I can't see it becoming a huge success.

Telegram is free to download and runs on all BlackBerry 10 handsets.

I personally like BBM more but you cannot deny the fact that people have moved on to WhatsApp in a huge way. I live in India and at one point off time everyone I mean almost everyone I knew had a blackberry phone & Bbm. But now I'm in the only one in my grp of friends carrying a Blackberry phone. People here don't care about blackberry phones & nor about its messenger service too. I'm giving a very honest feedback about India. I promote blackberry whenever I go but as a brand it's undergone too much damage in the recent past. I do my best to change people's views :)

Posted via CB10

But the thing is that Whatsapp is an inferior product and I hate the idea of it taking my phone numbers.

Posted via CB10

Here in Colombia is the same in big cities but in the countryside BlackBerry is still has somewhat of a leasdrship but on os7 phones...almost no 10's around . Definitely this has to do with advertising!! I haven't seen a BlackBerry ad in the past two years , while there is a lot of advertisement on IPhone and Samsung...even Nokia and Sony are more promoted. That sucks!!

Posted via CB10

Pakistan and here people too shifted. Firstly whatsapp is just a year news. Once ppl shall be asked to pay $1 yearly for whatsapp charges ( wifi or data plan cost as well) they shall shift to free messenger bbm

Posted via CB10

Me too, not even available in My World - Available tab section.
If BlackBerry World had a block app features, I already blocked it xD

I'm with you on this. Not gonna compromise security and privacy just because Joe Blow thinks it's ok.

Only BBM for me...

On a side note Rogers here in Canada has put out another 10.2.1 update yesterday.
It was very small around 30 megs if I remember correctly.

Not sure what's different yet but I think my battery is lasting longer, it still had a lot of power in the morning after sitting around on standby all night.

Take care.

I wish I could. Faith level not there yet. Otherwise some tropical monsoon clouds on their way ;-)

iPhone for me? Scr... ahem Q that! (posted from the latter)

Well for those who wanna get their Telegram fix with a native app, the developer of iGrann, Gaspertrix, is developing a native client called Telegrann. :)

Posted via CB10

I hope he doesn't go through a lot of work only for the real makers to release native . Something tells me if enough people download the port telegram will receive native

Posted via CB10

Furthermore, this app seems to be an unofficial app. It's just the Android app and he changed the text to say Blackberry instead of Android. At least spell it as BlackBerry....

Posted via CB10

For some reason Telegram became a hit in The Netherlands after Facebook bought WhatsApp... even Dutch minister of Defence signed up and shared all her contact data (of the Government) with the Russian owners of this data hungry app

Posted via CB10

Totally agree,
No Telegram
No WhatsApp
No Skype
No Viber

BlackBerry all the way
My friends who are on other mobiles have downloaded BBM, all you have to do is ask.

Posted by the Crackberry Pirate

I'm with you on that and I wish but the majority of the people are unfortunately now on Whatsapp and getting them to jump on bbm is not easy

I've asked all my friends to download BBM and only about 10 actually went through with it. For some reason, I meet real resistance from the rest of my friends. They see no reason to use BBM when they could just text and, because I'm the only person they know with a BlackBerry, they just see the app as taking up memory. Some of my friends absolutely refuse to download it, some downloaded it but have deleted it because I was their only contact on it, and some others downloaded it but then deleted it because it was a pain to setup...

Absolutely no one I know uses WhatsApp or Telegram... I guess I'm weird? lol

Posted via CB10

@ WWBlondieDo kinda same here. But all of my friends that do not have BlackBerrys did download BBM & love it. After Whatsapp crashed friends of my friends switched to BBM too.
Lots of them that switched devices to Android from BlackBerry have really missed BBM and thanks to BBM for all have activated their old BBMs.
I know no one that uses Whatsapp or Telegram

Posted via CB10

How it's always worked for me is, I ask my friends to download BBM for a week, and if they don't like it, they can always delete the app. So far no one has deleted it, in fact they have slowly added others to their contact list.

So if they ask why, just say try it for a week.
Once they see how good it is, they will realise

Posted by the Crackberry Pirate

I've tried that. Some people just flat out refuse and some others delete it because they still don't see the point since no one else they know uses it. The ones who have stuck with it still have no other BBM
contacts besides me, lol.

Posted via CB10

tell them you want to test some features.. free wifi calling.. and the glympse.. they might be impressed after that.

People don't use BBM beacuse it's a BlackBerry product / service.
My wife, who jumped from BB to Android, finally got on the bandwagon because I just flat out deleted WhatsApp.
Thing is that here, The Netherlands, Tlegram got an extra 800.000 (!!!) users the first week after the FB / WhatsApp sale.
800.000 on a population of about 16 million thats alot. When, on forums or when talking to friends / family, I sugest trying BBM I get alot of the same excuses:
- BlackBerry? They will be out of busines in (fill in time) from now. Yeah were have we heard that before?
- Nobody I know uses it. Uhm, I do :)
- Everybody ususes ***** Oh the Lemming fase.
Even when you show what BBM can do (even on Android or iOS) they still wont use it.
And most of them stick with the reason it being a BlackBerry product. Which to me should be a reason to do it, not leave it.

You should have mentioned that Telegram is not just like WhatsApp. They tried to build a secure messaging service and actually give away 200'000$ to the person which can crack the code. Look it up on telegram.org

I'd suggest listening to the latest Security Now, there are still concerns about this app, and the reward doesn't mean much. If I couldn't use BBM, I'd use Threema.

I read an article about changing your messenger after Facebook bought whatsapp and they said the most secure im system to use is Telegram!! No mention of BBM at all - the media are a joke!

Posted via CB10

BBM all the way for me. Keep bringing updates. Next one they solved the 6MB attachment. I would also like to be able to send the regular resolution pics instead of the receiver having to request it. I'm constantly sending pics, waiting then accepting the request. Its a pain. Also, I would like to have my BBM profile pic in high res as well. Keep the upgrades coming!!!

Next BBM update....BBM Peak

Oh, and also, to separate us from all other IM's I think they should have a feature called bbm peek. It would work like snapchat. You would go to attachment, choose send a 'peek', and then set the time the receiver can view it, take the pic or short vid, etc, you get the point. No other messenger service has this and clearly it would be a popular feature judging on what snapchat is worth. Just a thought.

Next BBM update....BBM Peak

+10 great idea! I also like that the name relates to the "peek and flow" features of BB10. Nice!

Posted while peeking and flowing on my incredible BBQ10! 

Are hub messages available on this android port? The official android version which I've installed through Snap on 10.2.1 at least isn't usable without the hub notifications and should remain in an active frame in order to receive messages...

Understand that the preference for BBM is definitely strong here, some also favors whatsapp.

One important thing that Telegram does is allow IM from desktop

Posted via CB10

If we gonna use android apps in BlackBerry then why we have bb???.. must have native apps and it seems it will not happen..sad

Posted via CB10

My BBM contact list is getting smaller day by day and almost everyone I communicate with on a regular basis has Whatsapp.

The reality is that BBM must do something drastic to get more users.

Re: Telegram....just heard about it a few days ago. Don't know of anyone who uses it. Whatsapp is definitely main IM client.

Posted via CB10

True.... for Asia, it's was BBM, then BBM got hit hard when WHAT's App come, and now What's APP got knock out when LINE came along! BBM just got forgotten!!! All I need is friends in my IM then security!!!

Posted via CB10

Jeeee... not becoming a success? have you an idea what's going on Germany because of the sale of whatsapp to facebook?

Posted via CB10

I welcome all IM Clients on BlackBerry 10, it makes the platform desirable for other platform users.
I'm pro BBM but it's user base ain't what it use to be let's face it. All my friends use BBM as I've made them but Telegram is a good client and whatsapp replacement

Posted via CB10

Agree. Market is still big enough for new entrants. Good luck to the new players.

Time will tell about WhatsApp users, whether they will migrate to other platforms since Facebook purchase.

Posted by the Crackberry Pirate

Since BBM has android 2.3.X compatibility say bye bye to WhatsApp... And soon as roll out the video calls... Skype will be next on the blacklist

I'd advised against using this. Someone sent me message asking to switch to Telegram so I had look at the website and it says they store all your messages in the cloud which is not a good sign. I did a bit more research and a few articles came up explaining why this is actually not as secure as the developers make it out to be. So all this app does is give people a false sense of security.

(I don't normally sign up to websites to comment but I felt obliged to warn people)

+1 on this. Very poorly implemented crypto. I would stay away if you are at all concerned about security.

Posted via CB10

Not becoming a big success? The developers said they're getting 100 new users a second and I believe it since many many people here in Germany almost instantly switched from Whatsapp to telegram after the Facebook buy.

Please remember:
Hope alone will leave you back being the only bbm user. I have 0 contacts and none of my want to switch to bbm because it's just not interesting to them. BlackBerry has to step it up with bbm or they will lose in this section. All the bbm support is great, but won't help if blackberry isn't stepping it up. People need a messenger where they can reach the most people (whatsapp) and one that is secure (bbm) which telegram seems to combine.

Posted via CB10

The again...the problem is the lack of advertisement for BBM and by the way BlackBerry...here in Colombia even Line has ads...but BBM no one remembers about it!

Posted via CB10

Me too! I was getting ready to jump to Droid if WhatsApp wasn't announced as one of the apps being released for BB10.

Ban 3rd party messengers, really?!

Posted via CB10

I sell my BlackBerry for sure!!!! If you have LINE App, I guarantee more BlackBerry device in Thailand and other Asia countries!!!

Posted via CB10

This is just off the top of my head... Why not have a regular contacts list and a friend/business associate list in BBM. Regular contacts could be contacted through phone numbers while your more important contacts could be with the pin system... Would this idea even work?

Posted via CB10

I don't like the fact that when I give someone my phone number, he or she takes the liberty of sharing my number without my consent to the likes of Whatsapp or Telegram (cause that is what happens when you install that app), who then store my name and phone number on their servers, to whatever purpose.

Posted via CB10

That is correct. And no protection. Even if you could opt-in to have your number blacklisted with WhatsApp, they'd still have to store it.

We your number gets deactivated, and passed in to someone else after a few months, what then?

This whole thing is flawed, in the end just a glorified replacement for SMS / MMS, and phone calls, because it's based on phone numbers.

Zzzzwiped from a Zedevice....

No thanks! Russian troops in Ukraine = Boycott Russian and Putin's product.

Oh by the way "Putin" = "Putain" = "W.h.o.r.e." in French. Hahaha

BBM is only one security standout. Non official, 3th party "secure" IM? This is a ridiculous.

Posted via CB10

Until BBM has the same exact features of WhatsApp or more (which looks like the upcoming updates may fill some of it, maybe most), people won't jump. I still only have 6 contacts on BBM and over 100 on WhatsApp. When WhatsApp went down, 20 of them moved to Telegram. So annoying and wish everyone would stick to one messaging platform which right now, I personally choose WhatsApp as my primary way of communication.

Posted via CB10

You know what would be a hit for bbm vs whatsapp, is that if bbm can use phone numbers of your contact list and find everybody who has bbm and add them to the suggested list in the invite. Therefore it is more secure and you can pick and choose who to add and your contact list is not automatically added to your bbm contact list like whatsapp. This might beat all the IM out there and add more users as fast as whatsapp but more secure.

Posted via CB10

Yes, allow option to register phone# (optional) for those who wants this feature. Leave blank for users who do not want to be discovered. This is much better than using email or Facebook contacts to suggest invites. Of course the invitation and acceptance is still required.

Trying to convert my friends into BBM... but not easy... so far successfully have 24 BBM contacts from 4contacts

Posted via CB10

+10 just for the conversation on the phone screen. "Go back to BBM." "OK!"

Posted while peeking and flowing on my incredible BBQ10! 

For me BlackBerry didn't make the right choice in the past especially with whatsapp. If you believe in your own app, you don't other product as they did with whatsapp against open whats app (thank you Tarek) especially with the security and privacy argument. But because BlackBerry didn't have any humility they made this choice. If you want to compete, BlackBerry should buy Telegram (a perfect publicity indeed) and communicate on Privacy. Plus eBBM, tablet client, windows phone client, Windows app client, etc. These can be the key.

Telegram claims to be always free and will never be sold. Blackberry can't buy it but can match and exceed its self destruct secret chats and offer stronger encryptions than both Telegram and Threema. Do it fast and BBM will control this market.

Be aware of telegram desktop version it's open source like telegram but it'has also java script libary. So it worse to install it on your computer and don't forget it's linked back all to Russia from server in Finland, Canada, UK or wherever.

It's payback time... before, it's them who don't wanna bring apps to BlackBerry. now, it's the people who doesn't want their apps anymore. Lol

Posted via CB10

Downloaded the app but doesn't work well enough... the app has to be active to send new message alerts. Also not very fluid in use. I hope an official app will be developed.

Posted via CB10

If you drop WhatsApp due to privacy/security concerns, Telegram is an odd choice.
Besides the so called encryption being ancient, Telegram was developed in Russia and is still under Russian control. They aren't exactly famous for their long history of protecting privacy...
Whether you are being tapped by Facebook, Google or NSA, or on the other side of the world by the FSB, makes little difference.
Any message service is as secure as its user who is aware of the risks and thinks about what he/she shares before sending....

Posted via CB10

Some people here are changing to telegram because of the WhatsApp outage, but I'm moving them to BBM :)

Posted via CB10

That's all we need. More messaging apps. At least BlackBerry World is growing!

Keepem' comin!

Posted using the best phone ever, the Z30!

I use bbm and skype, but now I ask people to come from Skype to bbm because it's doesn't eat so much battery :)

James Richardson.. are you technologically challenged or you have no idea of what you are talking about .. you said
Quote - "Is it any better than Whatsapp? Not that I can see and of course it isn't a patch on BBM, but the option is there if any of your buddies on other platforms use it."
Are you kidding me .. did you even use the app .. how about full encryption .. self destruct messages .. Huge data transfer allowed.. I guess it's unlimited .. so yes it's better than whatsapp...Next time do some research please..

LOL, another IM app!
When the dust settles soon enough, there will be but one or two.
Who knows which it will be?

Likely, the victors will be connected with a consortium of network providers.
IM cost the nets very little.
They will build customer base by providing IM, included in their service packs.

Is hard to say which IM app is good? I guess all IM have it's goods and bads. But the best IM app it's the one with Most Friends to chat with! My is LINE, all my friends and colleagues use LINE!!!

Posted via CB10

Just face it!!! All the securities and other good features, but there's no one to Chat with!!! So what's is BBM worth when I have only less than 10 contacts to chat with, while other IM is have up to 500 contacts. Bye bye BBM!!!

Posted via CB10

BlackBerry should use phone numbers but adding contact should be through invitation. Right now, the problem is the lack of friends in BBM no one is bothered to register for a PIN. So when a new BBM user opens the BBM he is disappointed when the contacts are empty and thus deletes the app immediately.

Posted via CB10

Have two friends left who are being stubborn and won't make the switch to bbm. But im sure I can get them on it. My friends love BBM group. We share photos and chat all the time on it. Just got to get bbm updated a bit more with some good features like video in bbm group, and if course video calling.

Posted from my Awesome Z10!

Neither are as secure as BBM and Telegram had recent security issues too. Just Google them. Problem is BlackBerry isn't sexy and that is what sells not security which is what BBM and BlackBerry are about.

What a sh#*ty piece of work: can't even enter my phone number properly.

I'm using it to get people when whattsapp crashed AND to keep BlackBerry Messenger.dont forget Bbm started the ball rolling..its got the best infrastructure. Never forget your friends and roots.ciao

Posted via CB10

Next time you have something really juicy for friends tell them you'll only send it on BBM. I know it's black mail but sometimes you just have to.Once they are on it get them to touch the little green telephone icon.....spoonfeed .they can then decide for themseves

Posted via the Android CrackBerry App!

Honestly i don't see the point of advertising an IM when we have something better which is BBM...
And Telegram Servers are in Russia so Goodbye NSA hello KGB, lol

It's very good, considering privacy
But the only thing which is in the down side is the is not native, please make it native and make it connected to the hub....
Best regards

Posted via CB10

I prefer to stick with BBM as there are some people I don't mind chatting with, but I absolutely DO NOT want them to have my phone number. BBM allows me that privacy, Whatsapp and Telegram do not.

I would never install WhatsApp due to its pulling of contacts, and the company's historically very lax approach to security. Now Facebook will likely also be getting everyone's contact lists. Telegram is a little interesting, but I'm not convinced of its security yet.

BlackBerry has an opportunity to gain share with multi-platform BBM, but it has to quickly be made "easier" for users to connect and to navigate the app. See my issues below.

I switched to Line a year and a half ago (first on my Torch 9810, then via APK->BAR on Z10 last summer) to have a way to connect with ex-BB family members who now have iPhones. Line has a good mix of security and features: SSL-based security on the wire (though content is stored on servers in Japan or Korea for a while), nice group messaging and photo sharing features, and a desktop client. The converted Line Android APK works OK on BB 10.1, and Line Camera partly works but is really slow. Hoping 10.2.1 helps.

I'm working to get my family members back onto BBM 2.0 in order to get BBM Voice, but have had some speed bumps: no audio on BBM Voice to one iPhone, invitation issues with the same iPhone 4S, and Glympse location-sharing issues between my Z10 and one Android. The iPhone client really needs Push notifications to wake it up on incoming BBM calls and messages. Also the BBM GUI now seems clumsy vs. Line and others, and could use an innovative feature or 2. I’m hoping for improvements soon!

As many people said before
This entire world moved to whatsapp and
There is nothing we can do about it

I am from Thailand!!! Let me share with you what's going on with BlackBerry here in Thailand and other part of Asian. BlackBerry is just gone, people are surprises to see me with BlackBerry Q10 and they don't even know about BB10.
BlackBerry new phone are impossible to find even 2 hand is not seen in any phone shop. BlackBerry is just Gone!!!! And the trend of IM in Thailand is as follows :
1st BBM.
2nd then What's App came along people start changing to iPhone and still can chat with cross platform.
3rd LINE came along. And BlackBerry device and support is getting outdated so everyone stop using BlackBerry device and BBM.

Until Q10 came along I find it hard to buy the devixce.... So bye bye BBM

Posted via CB10

Line is the biggest competitor for whatsapp... my friend complaint about BBM group unable to send voice note n share picture... still lots of basic improvement for BBM...
