Over the past few days, a small number of people in the forums started to notice they were unable to use BlackBerry Traffic as it wouldn't connect properly, was giving off error messages and just generally not working as expected. For some, services are back to a working state right now but to find out if things are running as per normal, we reached out to RIM to inquire:

There was a minor issue that impacted some users, but it is resolved now and BlackBerry Traffic is up and running for everyone.

RIM has announced today a partnership with the well known mapping and navigation company, TomTom. TomTom offers real-time mapping, navigation and traffic data and will now power the popular BlackBerry Traffic application. This is a sure sign of good things to come on the navigation front for BlackBerry 10, and I for one can't wait to see what's in store.

Research In Motion released a small update to their popular BlackBerry Traffic app. This update brings the app to v3.0.2.18 and includes bug fixes for both a text UI bug and power management. If you were seeing either of these bugs with the last release you will definitely want to grab this update in BlackBerry App World and put an end to those pesky problems.

BlackBerry Traffic is a great app for your device. With options like giving you your ETA based on current traffic conditions, alternate routes to avoid toll booths, voice guidance, and the ability to send your estimated ETA to contacts via SMS, email, or PIN, you will wonder how you ever travelled without it! We heard a couple of weeks ago to expect an update to BlackBerry Traffic, and it looks like it's finally available to download in BlackBerry App World. It seems this version is only for bug fixes, as no new additions were listed in the change log.

These bug fixes include:

• Fixed a bug where guidance stops
• Fixed a bug with BlackBerry Calendar integration
• Fixed a bug where Bluetooth doesn't disengage when audio is muted on the app

The latest BlackBerry Traffic has had a great run in the BlackBerry Beta Zone and is now available for download in BlackBerry App World. Verison 3.0.0.389 brings along voice guidance, GPS improvements and other fixes. If you haven't check it out before, it's a great way to navigate on the go without the need for an expensive GPS. While the UI could still use some polishing and perhaps more of a GPS-like display, free is free, right? You can grab the update now in BlackBerry App World from the link below.

Though just updated about two weeks ago, BlackBerry Beta Zone members can log in and get a new version of BlackBerry Traffic for testing. This update brings the app to v3.0.0.389, and provides several fixes and improvements.

• *Fixed* Audio guidance directions spoken after user selected “Cancel Destination”
• *Fixed* “Towards” is pronounced with speaker contracting the “to” instead of “twa”
• *Fixed* Exit number on road list spoken (when exit number available)
• *Fixed* “Application not responding” on BlackBerry Storm 9550 SmartPhones
• *Fixed* Application exiting during a phone call
• *Fixed* BlackBerry Calendar integration
• *Improvement* Audio guidance and quality improvements
• *Improvement* GPS detection improvements

Looks like RIM is getting out as many updates as they can before the holidays start. Next in line for a BlackBerry Beta Zone update in ls BlackBerry Traffic which has now been bumped up to v3.0.0.353. As noted in the BlackBerry Beta Zone, it does have some fixes included this release so you'll want to check it out:

• *Fixed* Overlap Text: The overlapping text bug displayed in the “Options” menu screen has been corrected.
• *Fixed* Device Lock: When pressing the lock key,  6.0+ OS devices will now lock when application is in the foreground.
• *Fixed* “Include Street Names” box: When checking the “Include Street Names” box in "Guidance Options", the application will no longer automatically default to “High-Quality Audio”.
• *Improvement* Initial Voice Guidance Instruction: “Arriving at destination” audible guidance is now enforced upon arrival.
• *Improvement* Guidance Options: Wording changed in “Guidance Options” menu screen to "Standard Audio – Faster Download" and "Enhanced Audio – Louder and Clearer". 

I don't use BlackBerry Traffic myself but that looks to be quite a large change log that should address a lot of folks problems with the app. If you're in the BlackBerry Beta Zone, you'll find the update there and waiting for you.

Just last week Research In Motion released v3.0 of BlackBerry Traffic in the Beta Zone. Today they pushed out a small update with a couple of bug fixes, bringing the version up to v3.0.0.319. 

Fixed issues include:

• Guidance Options: wording changed to "Standard-quality Audio (2.5x larger data download)" and "High-quality Audio (10x larger data download)"
• Battery Consumption: periodic timers disabled when in background and in arrived state.

BlackBerry Traffic 3.0 is now available in the BlackBerry Beta Zone. It's been a while since we've seen any updates for RIM's BlackBerry Traffic, but this one brings a much welcome feature -- Now included is voice guidance so you can navigate to your hearts content completely hands free.

New features include:

• Voice Guidance - New voice guidance helps users reach their destination with completely hands free navigation. The audible-turn-by-turn directions can run over Bluetooth or via your vehicle's speakers. Users can set up the voice instructions with varying levels of detail.
• Additional Road Information - User can find out if a road is closed or under construction as well as note toll routes that lie ahead!

BlackBerry Traffic is a free solution for those looking for easy navigation on the go. You can download the latest version free from the BlackBerry Beta Zone below.

• Complete UI revamp – You asked for it, you got it. BlackBerry Traffic 2.0 features new icons, color scheme, 6.0-style theme, and more!
• Route selection screen - You told us you want more routes to choose from, so we took action. There are now two route choices (including ETA and trip distance info for each) available to you as soon as you select a destination.
• Future traffic view - A new future traffic view can be accessed by selecting the current time on the route selection screen, or by flipping through the different views when a route is selected. This view can be used to determine the best departure time based on predicted traffic conditions.
• Next maneuver drive view - The simple view has been revised to display the next maneuver with corresponding turn icon in a large, easily viewable font.
• Search history - Frequent search terms are now available from a drop down on the search screen.

While it doesn't necessarily beat out full out GPS apps like VZ Nav or Telenav, it does get the job done and you can't beat the price. If you haven't tried it yet or you still have an older version, head to BlackBerry App World to grab the latest version.

Recently I made a road trip down to Virginia Beach for a wedding. Usually I know the roads I am traveling quite well, but in this case the route was very foreign to me. I have never been a fan of carrier navigation apps (mainly because of the monthly price) and have just used Google Maps if I found myself in a bind. Luckily, when I purchased my Hummer last year, they threw in a free GPS unit (refurbished of course) and I have kept it in my vehicle should the occasion arise where I would need it. Enter BlackBerry Traffic. I have heard of the app before, but never tried it or even read up on it extensively, due to the name. To me, the name made it seem like the app served one purpose, to keep you up to date with the traffic in your current region. I don't think it is such a far fetched assumption, but boy was I wrong....

RIMs own BlackBerry Traffic has been updated to version 1.3.1.207 and is officially out of beta. BlackBerry Traffic is a simple little app that lets you plan your driving route and gives you an eta, traffic delays and alternate routes. You can grab addresses from your contact list and even send an email to let your firends know what time you'll be arriving. While it doesn't have the features of a bigger, full GPS app, BlackBerry Traffic is handy to have is you spend much time on the road. Download if free from BlackBerry App World.

While it's not the prettiest app, BlackBerry Traffic could come in handy from time to time. We first saw it pop up in the Beta Zone a few weeks back, and now it has made it's way to BlackBerry App World for download. The app has a simple premise and lets you view traffic for your determined route. It shows your ETA, road closures and more. From App World:
