Black Hat 2013 session to discuss BlackBerry 10 OS from a security perspective

If you're genuinely interested in how effective BlackBerry 10 security is then you'll most certainly be interested in checking out the upcoming Black Hat US 2013 conference being held in Las Vegas July 27th - August 1st. At the event, there will be a briefing held by Ralf-Philipp Weinmann, who is a research associate at the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) of the University of Luxembourg. As noted on the Black Hat 2013 site, his briefing will cover BlackBerry 10 from a security perspective:

BlackBerry have come true to their word and released the BlackBerry 10.2 SDK for developers. This is a trimmed down version of the OS for testing purposes only but should give devs the extra tools they need to make their games/apps even more awesome.

Apple announced iOS 7 today and it has a few features that we've seen somewhere before. Namely, in BlackBerry 10!

Apple today in its WWDC keynote address unveiled its most magical, its most revolutionary -- and its most thieving version of iOS yet. It's a pretty big overhaul that includes a new look, new icons and some familiar new features.

And we couldn't help but notice just how similar some of those features are to what we've already seen on current BlackBerry devices.

Over the years we have seen everybody borrow a little here and there from the competition. Big features from one platform are bound to show up on another and that's just the way it is. But there were a few noticeable things in the upcoming version of iOS that look very similar to some features of BlackBerry 10 and even the BlackBerry PlayBook (oh and Windows Phone too!)

If you're feeling the blues now that BlackBerry Live is over and looking for a bit of excitement for the weekend, you can check out this freshly leaked BlackBerry Z10 OS from lbfe!

Please note, this leak is not for all devices. This time it's just the STL100-2 & 3 getting some love so if you don't have one of those then you'll want to move along. This leak bumps the OS version up to 10.1.0.1880, and some people are already reporting improved performance and battery life. If you install this please be sure to share your findings in the comments below or in the forums.

Just like every other time - be sure to read over the instructions before you get going. You'll need a Windows PC to run the autoloader and you'll want to perform a full backup of your device first. If anything goes bad - don't blame us. Remember you can always reload your Z10 OS if something gets borked.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Confirms BlackBerry 10, BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 Deployment

BlackBerry has announced that the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the largest department in the nation, is currently deploying BlackBerry 10 devices and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. The LASD is already and existing BlackBerry customer and will now be moving to BlackBerry 10 to increase the capabilities of their on-the-go devices. Coupling new BlackBerry 10 devices with BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10 will give the LASD the security they need while still allowing users to get things done.

The QNX Bentley has just taken to the stage at BlackBerry Live and the whole OS is actually running BlackBerry 10. A perfect demo of this was the car receiving a BBM video call from Vivek - clearly this doesn't work while driving!

Is BBM down for you in Asia Pacific?

We've had various reports in that BBM for BlackBerry 10 users is suffering a service interruption over in the Asia Pacific area. It now turns out that legacy BlackBerry smartphones are suffering too. In the CrackBerry forums one user has stated that there is maintenance happening which will be resolved in a few hours - however we are not currently able to confirm this.

BlackBerry announced that they have teamed up with ISEC7 to offer BlackBerry Readiness Services to customers for BlackBerry 10. ISEC7 will offer various services including Change Management and Planning with Migration Services, Change Management and Planning with Remote Installation, and BlackBerry 10 Application Development Services.

The services are geared toward helping organizations make a smooth transition from an older BES to BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10. With BES 10, companies can support not only BlackBerry devices but also iOS and Android.

BlackBerry Knowledge Base offers a further look at how 'promo codes' will be used in BlackBerry World

As BlackBerry Dev Alpha C devices were rolling out to developers not long ago, it was spotted in BlackBerry 10.1 that BlackBerry was exploring the idea of 'coupon codes' or promo codes as they're now described. As an example of their possible use, developers could give out special codes as part of a promotion so you can get their paid app for free or with an discount just by entering that code.

A new BlackBerry Knowledge Base article has been published that offers up some further details on the matter. More specifically the error codes that are possible in certain scenarios, which in turn offer up a look at how promo codes could be used once made available to everyone:

Earlier this week, we saw OS 10.1.0.1483 roll out to developers. Many non-developers loaded on their device only to discover that it wasn't exactly a full OS. Now though, lbfe from the CrackBerry Forums has either found (or put together) a full version of OS 10.1.0.1429 for several of the BlackBerry Z10 variations out there. In any case, we're going to treat this as a leaked version and give the regular warnings and disclaimers that go along with that.

Right then, as always - use caution when installing a leaked OS like this and remember if you break your phone it's not our fault. Also, a good idea to make a backup because you're essentially performing a factory restore on your device. If you don't want to lose data, a backup is needed. You'll need a Windows PC to install these files and If it goes downhill, remember you can always wipe and restore your device.

While AT&T has rolled out OS 10.0.10.822 (software version 10.0.10.116) officially, if you happen to have a Euro BlackBerry Z10 (STL100-2) you too can now have the update, provided you don't mind loading a leaked OS onto your device. Unfortunately, it will require a Windows PC to install but if you're willing to give it a go, you can hit the link below to grab the installer. If it goes downhill, remember you can always wipe and restore your device.

It's been suggested the file will work on other devices, such as the STL100-3 and STL100-4 but for now, if you decide to give that a go, you do so at your own risk. As always - use caution when installing a leaked OS like this and remember if you break your phone it's not our fault. BlackBerry OS 10.1 said to bring HDR camera, PIN messaging and more

The speculation is on about just what new features will be included in OS 10.1 upon release. We've already seen some of the updates geared toward the upcoming BlackBerry Q10, but aside from that don't know much else.

BBnews.pl has posted up some new info with a few features that could make their way into the OS update. Among them are an improved camera complete with HDR functions, PIN messaging and viewing files on a PC from your device using BlackBerry Link. Not a lot to go on for any of these but still very intriguing.

Now we can't say for certain if we'll see any or all of these features included in the update but it's a good possibility at this point.

You can expect many more features to sneak their way into 10.1 as well and we'll most certainly let you know if we find out more.

AT&T OS 10.0.10.822 (10.0.10.116) for the BlackBerry Z10 now available

Lots of BlackBerry Z10 users here in the US are settling in nicely but are always on the lookout for an OS update. We just got word that AT&T is rolling out a new one today that should make for some happy Z10 owners. The update brings us up to OS version 10.0.10.822 (software release 10.0.10.116).

There are a few notes of what's changed such as battery life improvements and support for third-party apps. We can also hope that it fixes a few of the bigger issues like the random reboots that some users have been experiencing.

If you're on AT&T you should see the update available, but if not go to Settings > Software Updates to check manually. No word on other carriers dropping this OS yet but if you see it pop up be sure to let us know in the comments and we'll update this post as we go.

BlackBerry 10 and the Z10 get some action down under

Next in line for the BlackBerry 10 launch is Australia. The new OS and BlackBerry Z10 have had a launch event down under and the good people of Australia can pick up the Z10 from March 25th and 26th on the country's two launch partners - Telstra and Optus.

With the U.S. launch imminent, BlackBerry 10 is very close to rocking the whole world. I suspect the American market is going to be rather surprised at how awesome the Z10 is. Time for BlackBerry to kick some butt in the U.S. once again!

EE in the UK rolls out OS 10.0.10.90 for the BlackBerry Z10

Over in Twitterland and in our own CrackBerry forums I've noticed quite a few people saying that they have not been able to download WhatsApp for their BlackBerry Z10 if on the EE network. Great news if you are an EE (Orange & T-Mobile) customer as the carrier has released OS version 10.0.10.90, meaning that as well as all the OS improvements, users should now be able to download WhatsApp without any issues.

We saw OS 10.0.10.648 leak for the BlackBerry Z10 (STL100-3) not too long ago, and now the same OS has leaked for the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha and STL100-1 models (if you don't know your model number, go to Settings > About). For Dev Alpha users, this update brings along some features and fixes that some Z10 owners have received through carrier updates. Keep in mind that you'll need to install this OS from a Windows PC and use extreme caution as it could screw up your device. That being said - make sure you do a full backup first and don't blame us if you break anything along the way. Hit the link below to download.

AT&T rolling out OS 10.0.10.684 (10.0.10.88) for the BlackBerry Z10

On the heels of the AT&T BlackBerry Z10 announcement earlier today, it looks like things are off to a good start as OS software 10.0.10.88 (OS version 10.0.10.684) is now available OTA. Current users with an unlocked Z10 on AT&T were left out in the last round of updates from other carriers, so this is a welcome update and it will most likely be the same version for AT&T devices at launch. No word of what's new in this version yet, but you can expect it carries over some of the fixes from other carrier updates including battery life issues, calendar & contact fixes and camera optimizations.

If you're a Z10 user on AT&T, check for updates to get this one going and be sure to report back with your findings. If you're seeing this offered up for other carriers be sure to drop a comment and let us know!

WooHoo! It's fixed! No more Bedside Mode rants from this guy. Earlier today Rogers and Fido pushed out an over the air OS update to the BlackBerry Z10 that among other quality improvements and bug fixes, brought with it the ability to once again allow for Phone calls to ring while Bedside Mode is enabled and all other notifications are turned off. If you read our Z10 Review or listened to any of our late night live shows from CB's BB10 Launch Campaign Headquarters, you'll know I was bent out of shape over this feature not working as I needed it to on my Z10.

Rogers, Fido and TELUS now rolling out OS 10.0.10.672 for the BlackBerry Z10

If you're on Rogers, Fido or TELUS (Yes, that includes Koodo) and are the proud owner of a BlackBerry Z10, you'll want to go ahead and check for software updates on your device. As reported in the CrackBerry forums and witnessed on some of our own devices, software update v10.0.10.85 is now arriving OTA. Yes, that's the software version -- the OS version itself is 10.0.10.672 and the highest release we've seen thus far, including leaks.

The update will bring you to 10.0.10.648 but unfortunately will require a Windows PC to install. If you're willing to give it a go, you can hit the link below to grab the installer. If it doesn't say STL100-3 -- Abort mission. It's not been verified on any other Qualcomm LTE variations.
