Angry Birds

It's been a while now since Angry Birds was released on the BlackBerry PlayBook and now, Rovio is finally rolling out an update to the ever popular game. Angry Birds HD is now sitting at v1.6.3.1 in BlackBerry App World but sadly, we're left to wonder what exactly may have changed with this release. Rovio hasn't made any announcements or added a change log to the package so if you happen to spot anything new, let us know in the comments. In the meantime, we'll see if we can't get a change log of sorts from Rovio.

Space Blast Space Blast

If you're looking for a fun game to pass the time then you should give Space Blast by XIMAD INC a try. Yes it's another bubble game and is a variation of their popular offering Bubble Birds but here the action takes place in space (to save humanity) rather than in the jungle. I don't normally play a lot of games on my BlackBerry, I'd much rather enjoy the bigger screen of my PlayBook, but I'd thought I'd give it a try.

Game play doesn't veer too far off from the original: players must match three or more balls of the same color to remove them from the field and score as many points as possible to top the scoreboard. Special bonus spheres form obstacles such as asteroids or ice comets, act as helpers by changing the ball to the color you need, or even set off a nuclear bomb to help clear the board. While the concept is the same, I do like how they've updated it with a new look and feel.

Overall Space Blast is an entertaining game that offers amazing graphics and sound, and runs smoothly on my BlackBerry. It kept me occupied during my six hour plane ride from New York to Las Vegas. However, I must warn you that the app size is ~5MB. Space Blast is $1.99 in BlackBerry App World and is compatible with most BlackBerry devices running OS5 and higher but is not available for the Torch 9850/60 or the Style 9670. For a limited time, Ximad is offering the full version with all levels absolutely FREE.

Pew Pew

Looking for an awesome game to jam away on this weekend for your PlayBook? Head on over to BlackBerry App World and grab Pew Pew if you haven't already. If you've ever played Geometry Wars then this vector shoot em will bring back memories and will have you wasting a good many hours trying to unlock ships, win medals and get the highest score on the leader board. After having played the iOS and Android versions, it's pretty awesome to have it arrive on the BlackBerry PlayBook and just like on those platforms, it's available for free. Retro gaming style at its finest.

When it comes to gaming on any portable electronic device, my preferences are a bit odd and I find it rather difficult to find games that meet what I am looking for. I would much rather a game that I could pick up and put down at any point in time without having to worry about hitting a save point, or being in the middle of a mission that I won't finish anytime soon. SnowBomber for the BlackBerry PlayBook allows me to do just this, and while the concept is very simple, and you could wonder just how much fun can be had throwing snowballs at snowmen -- the answer is a lot.

Once you launch the game you are presented with a pretty simple landing page, you can start the game play, view high scores or jump into the story mode. From here you can also toggle the sounds and you have the option to share with Twitter and Facebook as well. After jumping into the game play you have your controls on the left hand side to pause the game or to duck behind the wall, in the center is the sling to shoot the snowballs at the opponents, and on the right hand side is a table which builds up with various extras and perks to help beat the snowmen.

The snowmen pop up from the ground and the idea is to throw your snowball at them and knock them down, but the tricky part is they also throw them back at you. Luckily you can slice their snowballs and gain a few points for doing so, but be careful because careless swipes will also knock out your own snowballs. There are a few different size snowmen, each of them requiring a different amount of snowballs to knock them out, and as they grow bigger they also throw more snowballs at you each time.

Whether you have a few minutes or a few hours to pass by you won't want to miss out on trying this free game. Hit the link below for some additional information and to download SnowBomber for your PlayBook.

When popular titles from other platforms make their way onto BlackBerry we tend to get rather excited, and for me that was definitely the case when Backbreaker 2 Vengeance arrived in BlackBerry AppWorld for the BlackBerry PlayBook. For those unfamiliar with this title it is a football game but with its very own style, you aren't playing team verse team but instead it is a 1 on 1 style game play.  You can chose whether to take an offensive stance in which you need to avoid getting tackled and make it through some obstacles to score a touchdown or you can go for the defensive approach and prevent the computer from being able to score on you.

The game utilizes both on screen controlls as well as the gyroscope of the device so you will have to tilt the device from side to side to control where your player goes. With the on screen controls you can juke left and right as well as spins in each direction, and if you are feeling really good about passing the defenders you can showboat a little as well for some extra points.

What I like most about the game is that you aren't playing a four quarter full length game here, but instead quick little matches so if you want to pick it up for a few minutes and then put it back down you are able to do so. For only $2.99 you can have yourself a game with amazing graphics, interactive game play and hours of fun. Hit the link below for full details and to grab a copy for yourself.

Top 10 Brain Apps

Time and time again, I’ve heard arguments about how smartphones make for dumb people. In other words, our continuous reliance on our smartphones have made us mentally lazy. We no longer need to remember addresses and phone numbers. Keeping tabs on appointments is as simple as a reminder and there’s no longer a need to worry about forgetting birthdays and anniversaries. Your mobile browser is your source of information, useful or otherwise, so your brain can be emptied of interesting facts.

On the other hand, not having to keep track of so much has been said to free our minds for more important things. We are free to create, innovate and dream. No matter which path your cranium may take, you should make sure you give it a workout once in a while. Since your BlackBerry smartphone, and the BlackBerry PlayBook, have taken so much away from your mind, it’s only fair that they give something back, as well. Let’s take a look at the Top 10 Brain Teaser Apps and Games for both the BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry smartphones.

Ninja Jump

Now that the hustle and bustle of the holiday season is over it's finally time to sit back, relax, and spend some quality time with your device. If you're looking for a game that's fun for the whole family then check out Ninja Jump by Pepper.pk, the developer behind Ninja Fruit Dash. So get ready to take on the role of the infamous ninja and scale the treacherous walls and jump for your life in this fun action game.

The object of the game is simple. Just tap on the screen to jump from one wall to the other to kill your enemies and eliminate your obstacles before they knock you down. As you climb higher and advance to each new level, you'll gather power ups and points along the way. When you collect three of a kind (i.e. shoes) you get another bonus. If you bump into an obstacle or a paper plane flies into you then its game over. You can also pick up the pepper power up which acts as a shield to block one hit.

Ninja Jump is an addictive game that runs smoothly and is not as easy as it looks. You'll need to be quick to maneuver around each object in your path, although I'm sure you folks will get the hang of it. It's currently available in BlackBerry App World for $.99 for devices running OS 5.0 and higher. Why not spend this upcoming weekend curled up with your beloved BlackBerry and start climbing some walls.

9 men's morris

When it comes to gaming and BlackBerry, I prefer using my BlackBerry PlayBook to kill some time. The only exception to this is when a game sports BlackBerry Messenger integration. I want to have that connectivity, the knowledge that I’m owning someone I know. First we chat through BBM and then I’m beating you into submission! It doesn’t matter how detailed the game is, it just has to be both fun and addicting. Both can be said about the BlackBerry smartphone game 9 Men’s Morris. This is a strategy board game that you can challenge your BBM friends. The game gives each player nine pieces that they would move around the 24 spots on the board. Once all of the pieces are placed on the board, players then take turns moving them around until they are able to place three in a row; thereby creating a Mil. With the creation of a Mill, you then can remove an opponent’s piece from the board. In a nutshell, you win by leaving your opponent with no legal moves or less than three pieces.

The graphics are simplistic, but as I said before, it is about the game play. 9 Men’s Morris is again addictive and much more entertaining than Checkers or Tic Tac Toe. The developer, Ebscer, is known for offering games of this type, including the popular Xploding Boxes and Pixelated. If you want to try out 9 Men’s Morris with your BBM friends, you can grab it for free from BlackBerry App World.
