IM+ For Skype Offers Free WiFi Calling

A few days ago Shape Services released an updated version of their IM+ Skype applicationt, this time around touting its offerings of free WiFi calling from your BlackBerry utilizing Skype. Given in the past applications like this have used a SkypeOut/SkypeIn call back feature users often found that while the calls were free, they were also using their minutes up when placing these calls. Not exactly my definition of free. I wanted true WiFi calling. No carrier connection just WiFi, which is what SHAPE claimed with this.

Quite honestly, it seems as though the BlackBerry platform is among the last to see this type of offering arrive. The iPhone has plenty of applications that can make use of VoIP and even the official Skype app for it, allows WiFi calling. Heck, I don't even have a SIM card in my iPhone and it still works for calls. Android is no exception there either, the Android marketplace has many apps in it that act the same way. Over time, I have heard many reasons as to why BlackBerry couldn't make use of this feature. Everything from it's a hardware issue right down to it being a security issue. All of which just sounded like rather half-arsed excuses to me. Here is a quick look at SHAPE services IM+ Skype offering, their latest offering promises free WiFi calling over VoIP and I put it to the test.

Skype Settings

After having downloaded and installed the application, I was able to successfully set up my Skype account and log in. The set up process can be a little confusing at times as to what options it is that you should be choosing, but there is some great resources on the SHAPE site to assist. For the most part, as long as you know exactly what your Skype plan is and how you wish to make and receive calls then you should be pretty much set. The auto configuration process makes sure of that.

Skype Calling

Given that I made mention of SkypeIn and SkyeOut services, this screen is part of the configuration process in how to avoid any of those charges or minute uses. For this case, I was only concerned with being able to use WiFi to make calls outbound free of charge. Other scenarios are going to be based on how you plan on using the services and which Skype plan, if any you are subscribed to.

Skype Contacts

With my Skype IM+ services all set up, carrier network disabled and WiFi turned on, I was able to successfully login to Skype as per normal and make calls direct from my BlackBerry using nothing but VoIP as well as chat with my contacts over WiFi. Call quality was not exactly perfect but it's what I have become used to as being "good" for Skype in the middle of the day. Skype IM+ does have a few things that users may not like though.

One point of concern maybe for some is that in order to speak to the other party you have to use a similar to "push to talk" method. For example, if I wish to speak, I have to hold down the a convenience key in order for my audio to go out. Otherwise, you'll just be talking and the other person will not hear you. Not that big of a deal but worth a mention for some who may not like that.

Overall, given the other options out there in the BlackBerry application space for apps that connect to Skype, I'd have to put Skype IM+ at the top. It does what it says. And if avoiding using your minutes or having to pay for each call via SkypeOut is a concern, it just might be worth the buy in price for you, especially if you have a Skype subscription. As it stands, Skype IM+ is available for $29.95 and there is a 7 day free trial available. Coupling this app with a Skype subscription, could be a money saving move in the longrun given the amount some carriers charge for roaming. If anyone is headed to Mobile World Congress, you can also visit SHAPE services there at stand 7A46, Hall 7.

Didiom Pro Streams Your Audio Collection to Your Device - Win 1 of 100 Free Subscriptions!
By Adam Zeis | 10 Feb 2010 09:14 | 125 comments

Didiom Pro  Didiom Pro

Didiom Pro may seem like your everyday streaming music app at first glance, but its not. Didiom Pro lets you stream your personal audio collection from your PC to your device over 3G and Wifi. You can stream music, podcasts, audiobooks or any other audio stored on your computer, and also download the items to your device for offline listening. Didiom Pro requires an application to be installed on both the device and PC, and the PC must be on (with the app running) in order to stream music. The Didiom Pro interface on your mobile device looks similar to the controls of an iPod, allowing you to play, pause and skip tracks. The controls can be a bit touchy (hitting the trackpad to the left or right accidentally skipped tracks without even clicking) but overall they work well. You can choose to browse by track, title or artist to easily find what you're looking for when on the go. Didiom Pro sells for just $0.99 a month (or $9.99 for the year) and is available in BlackBerry App World.

Contest: We have 100 Didiom Pro subscriptions to give away. Just leave a comment on this post to enter. Contest ends this Sunday at Midnight PST. Please only leave one comment, multiple entries won't count.

RIM Advertising Their Twitter Client For BlackBerry In India?

RIM Advertising Their Twitter Client For BlackBerry In India?

Hey, it's no secret. Much like the BlackBerry Tour 9650 and the BlackBerry Pearl 9100 we all know "Twitter For BlackBerry" is coming at some point in time, we just don't know when exactly. Alas, I guess we can take this latest piece of information spotted by Rajrani in our very own forums as even further confirmation. When I look at this info, I see one of two things here:

1). RIM actually is advertising their RIM-built Twitter for BlackBerry.

2). They are using the Twitter name as selling leverage in India.

BlackBerry users know they can access many Twitter clients on their devices. For that matter even the mobile Twitter site is accessible enough through the BlackBerry browser. So, I guess there is the distinct chance for a third slot there. Being that RIM knows they have a Twitter client coming, it's not fully completed yet but they are using the Twitter name as leverage in the mean time cause they know no matter what, users can still access Twitter.

Grooveshark For BlackBerry Updated To v1.0.7

Grooveshark, the premium streaming music application we looked at previously has rolled out an update recently. Sadly, no changelog was issued with the release but users opening up the application were indeed, prompted to download what is now v1.0.7. Seems a lot of T-Mobile users were having issues with getting the application to work previously, so maybe you'll want to give this version a shot to see if it works better. Grooveshark is available for $3/mnth through their VIP program which allows for unlimited streaming and caching of music played for offline usage.

By Adam Zeis | 08 Feb 2010 12:16 | 31 comments

Unread

Still no Google Reader app for our beloved BlackBerry devices, but one solution has popped up that appears to be a good hold-over until an official Google Reader app shows up (or if it shows up). Unread was previously only available for the Storm, but has just been released for all devices running OS 5.0. If you're looking for an app to get your Google Reader subscriptions on the go, Unread may be the one for you. Check it out for $4.99 in the CrackBerry App Store.

Ultimate Twitter Client Roundup Part 4: Openbeak
By Adam Zeis | 08 Feb 2010 09:22 | 12 comments

OpenBeak (formerly TwitterBerry) is probably one of the best known Twitter clients for BlackBerry. When Twitter first started its monumental rise, TwitterBerry was one of the few clients available for BlackBerry, and everyone who was jumping on the Twitter wagon got in on the action. New clients began to show up, and TwitterBerry quickly fell to the back of the pack. It didn't totally go away, and now rebranded OpenBeak, it still hopes to capture users with its simple features and ease of use. Take a look at the video above for a quick overview of OpenBeak's features (or lack of) and see how it compares to the other clients in our Ultimate Twitter Client Roundup.

Genius Medical Diary Keeps Track of All Your Important Medical Info
By Obi | 08 Feb 2010 09:22 | 10 comments

Genius Medical Diary

I recently came across a very interesting application called Genius Medical Diary by Gurparit Chand. It stood out to me, seeing as I have not really seen an app quite like this before. The app acts as a database for all of your pertinent medical information. It stores such data as name, social security number, blood type, medications, diseases/conditions, immunizations, contact numbers, emergency contacts, and insurance information. With this app, you can store as many medical profiles as you wish, making it great for qucik access to your entire family's medical info. The application also features backup/restore to device, which is nice with any app. Genius Medical Diary is on sale for $1.99 until March 1st for all Blackberrys running OS 4.5+. You can also try their free version BerryMed, however it does lack in features when comparing to Genius Medical Diary, which is to be expected.

Craigslist Mobile App for BlackBerry Smartphones Now Available in App World

craigslistmobile app for BlackBerry craigslistmobile app for BlackBerry

If you're a hardcore Craiglist user and a BlackBerry fan you'll be happy to know that the craiglist mobile app for BlackBerry was finally approved into App World today (we first caught a glimpse of it back in November - check out that post for video). This full-featured app is the "official craigslist app" and was built for craigslist by Movela/Pyxis Mobile. That being the case, the bad news here is that the app carries a price tag of $4.99. It definitely provides a smoother and faster experience than running the mobile website, that's for sure, but may not be worth the $ for those who just check out craiglist from time to time. You can debate that one in the comments or discuss it in the forums!

By Kevin Michaluk | 05 Feb 2010 12:20 | 155 comments

SmrtGuard-Free - Get it for FREE

OK CrackBerry Nation, listen up. This is one I'm pretty dang excited about. If you're a reader of CrackBerry.com you're likely familiar with SmrtGuard by now as we've talked about it a bunch of times since it was still in beta. SmrtGuard, a BES for BIS application so to speak, is known for its "Find my BlackBerry" functionality along with Remote Data Wipe and OTA Data Backup / Restore features. It's definitely one of those must-have apps for BlackBerry BIS customers, but it has always been a must-have app with a price. But there's good news... the folks at SmrtGuard have now rolled out the SmrtGuard-Free version so it's an app we all can now afford.

For the whopping price of $0.00, you get all of these features FREE for LIFE:

  • Find my BlackBerry
  • Remote Data Wipe
  • Remote Listen (Remote Call Fwd) - Yes, you can remote call fwd your BlackBerry to another number in case you left it at home!
  • Add a Loved-one as a tracker (have your loved one get SmrtGuard, and add yourself so you can track each other) -> aka the Valentine's Day gift of trust :)
  • Personal Guardian and SIMCard Guardian

Did I mention you get all of that FOR FREE?! Oh yeah, you also get their secure data back-up and migration (in case you are switching from Android to BlackBerry or vice versa) features for 30 Days, which comes standard in their premium version of SmrtGuard Pro. To get SmrtGuard-Free, just follow the link below and enter your email address to be sent the link. This is one of those apps I really think every BlackBerry user should have installed and running, so be sure to spread the word.

Snaptu For BlackBerry Updated To v.1.2.8
By Bla1ze | 05 Feb 2010 10:14 | 18 comments

Snaptu For BlackBerry Updated To v.1.2.8

Snaptu, the widget-based application got a version bump up to v1.2.8 from the previously available v1.2.7. Sadly, I cannot find any definitive change log but from my use it does seem to have sped up the application a little bit more and you can now add a Google search bar to the main screen, were as before it was just a widget.

Since Snaptu allows for multiple widgets to be created from within the app, you can add quite a few of your personal favorites: Twitter, Picasa, AccuWeather, RSS News Reader, Live Soccer Scores, MyMovies and the list goes on from there. I personally enjoy the Google reader widget since Google has yet to give us a dedicated solution. But I digress, you all can ask Adam how he feels about the situiation - he'll appreciate your concern, and of course be sure to check out Snaptu. ;)

Fandango BlackBerry App Updated And Offering Special Deals

Fandango recently updated their BlackBerry application. Bug fixes and UI changes round out the latest version but for a short time you can also take advantage of the special offers Fandango has put in place. As the pic indicates, no service fee will be applied to any ticket sales from now until, March 7th. The app is free to download, so give it a run through and while you're at it, grab some tickets to a movie. I personally suggest Avatar if you haven't seen it yet.
